Do you fancy fighting off alien hordes in the charred, terraformed ruins of a post apocalyptic San Francisco? Trion wants to make it easier for you to do just that.

In a press release today, Trion announced that PC players can sign up for Defiance and, upon account completion, receive a free 72 hour taster of their MMOTPS--Third Person Shooter.

Defiance Announces Its Recruit-A-Friend Campaign

Attention all Arc Hunters! Today Defiance has announced the beginning of its "Recruit-a-Friend" campaign and is offering players some pretty nice loot for bringing their friends on board the Defiance train.

The first, most eye searing content that I saw in the DLC preview for Defiance, hosted by Trion's Trick Dempsey, was one of the new Arkfall events.

In the Castithan Charge Pack--release window not yet confirmed, other than "soon"--Arkfalls will receive some added variety in the form of a large robotic enemy that players will have only seen a version of, and not interacted with, near the Golden Gate Bridge in the current storyline.

While attacking the Dark Matter Monolith, a slightly smaller droid compared to the one already in game, players will have to contend with multiple enemies and objectives in an impressive, chaotic swarm of connecting events.

Defiance: Infection!

A night spent playing Defiance is always fun, but when you combine it with three friends a night spent playing Defiance becomes a thrilling experience you’re left wanting to repeat.

From co-op maps to arkfall chases, the action is a rollercoaster ride of endorphin saturation. I just love how this game encourages teamwork while also supporting solo play. Not only that, but it’s a game you can enjoy at your leisure.

Defiance Free Weekend

Anyone who hasn't made the plunge into the world of Defiance can catch up over the Memorial Day weekend. Lasting through 1:00pm PDT on Sunday, May 26th, players will be able to try out Defiance through Steam without having to pay the standard box price.

Layoffs Hit Trion

It appears that an unconfirmed number of employees at Trion Worlds have just received a terrible end to the week. According to reports from both IGN and Kotaku, between 70% and 80% of the company have been let go this afternoonUpdate: Trion has been in contact and stated that  the rumored figures are a large exaggeration and do not reflect the restructuring accurately.

Following a disappointing launch and lackluster reception at the hands of critics, Defiance has struggled despite recently clocking up over a million registered users. The TV series has fared significantly better by comparison, with SyFy recently renewing the show for a second season.

Defiance Renewed for Second Series

Hold on to your hats, Ark Hunters, as some serious Arkfall has just landed. In a move that’s sure to delight both Human and Votan, SyFy has today announced that Defiance will be returning for a second series.

Trion Worlds released some startling figures today regarding the post apocalyptic Sci-Fi MMO Defiance.

Though 500,000,000 squashed hellbugs to date is a fun figure to bandy around, the big news comes from the number of registered accounts.

Over 1,000,000 accounts have been set up in the first month since launch.

Has the diligent work that Trion has put into improving the game since launch contributed to the success? Or is it the added impetus gained from the commencement of the television show?

Most likely a mixture of both.

Fans of the game and the show can also grab the chance to get their likeness in the show by completing new Most Wanted Pursuits after registering their intent. You can sign up and get all of the details right here.

Defiance: First Impressions

Screenshot

Defiance has garnered a lot of attention due to its ambitious attempt to blend two forms of media in a seamless narrative. Monday night the television series premiered on the SyFy channel and it would seem the fates of both the game and the series are inescapably intertwined.

The series can be discussed in detail elsewhere, but after playing Defiance since launch, I find the game a frustratingly mixed experience for a variety of reasons.
