Ultima Online: A Player's Celebration Part 2

The second part of a personal journey celebrating UO's 15th Anniversary.

What captivated me from the first time I created an account was the vast land that UO was and is. If I chose to do nothing else but take a walk in the world that is UO, it would take weeks or months in real time to see everything, provided as a given I would not die on my trek.

UO is an ever-evolving world. Dungeons are constantly changing. New venues are created so it is never a game that remains the same. New directions give all players the chance to explore and conquer every challenge. Towns become besieged by an invasion of spawn and the community always rises to the cause to do battle against any evil threatening the peaceful existence of the world of UO we have all come to love.

The game window is isometric top down, so the view takes in the player's surroundings, and not a first person view which never appealed to me. The game interface is so simple and original. To move a character there is always a cursor. Place the cursor in front of your character and simply hold down the right mouse button. Move the mouse in any direction while doing this and your character will follow. Nothing could be simpler. The left mouse button, if double clicked, will enable the character to interact with objects like chests that need to be opened to see the contents, or to engage an enemy in a battle.

It’s time to sum it all up.

Here is a game that has remained and given pleasure to countless players for 15 years. The hallmarks remain what they were at the start; an ever evolving client and a community that cares about each other.

I have three active accounts in UO that I've had for many years and I see no time in the future when I will leave this game. I would miss the game itself, but more importantly I would miss the remarkable community that is UO.

Safe travels everyone!
