New Year's Event

Season's greetings and a happy New Year! Incidentally, a certain impetuous summoner, looking for a way to accomplish the arduous, onerous task of defeating Maat, called on Fenrir to read his fortune for the New Year. Unfortunately for him, Fenrir refused to listen, and ran outside of town instead! Won't you lend the poor summoner a hand and help him catch Fenrir if you see him? Fenrir claims that he just wanted to teach the inconsiderate little summoner a lesson, but apparently the avatar does plan to forgive him. [Event Details] This event is scheduled to commence on Dec. 31, 2005 at 07:00, and will last until Jan. 10, 2006 at 0:00 (PST).

What happen to the stable necklaces from last year... I want to recharge them!!!! Damn SE for not giving them back to us!

For the ones who were not there last year, the event was similar. You had birds running arround (Year of Roosters), and they were mostly like this year, where you get a random buff when you trade them something. BUT, there was also a card game in all areas where you had 7 different cards you had to dig (had to compete with goblins on chocobos, while we were on foot). Trading all different 7 cards to the Moogle gave you the stable necklace for that city. These stable necklaces had 10 charges to warp you to the city's stable of the collar.

These stables necklaces are the l33t when you are late for dynamis or when you forgot something in your storage... I guess they might put them in another event. Well I hope they do! >.>

Awful Default Decent Good Excellent I think its funny that people complain about the events so much. "This event is crap!" "It was so stupid!" No one is forcing anyone to participate in the events. If you felt like going along with the event, don't complain. It was your own free will that made you jump into it, not SE. =P

no, when SE decided to change music and add god awful fireworks at a set time and make it to where ANYWHERE in the world you'd be certain to see them then you are forced into a event.

When you can't even run thru the city without hitting a BlackHole of Lag because everyone wants to bug the holy hell out of you for a stupid robe, then you're forced into the event.

The few events that were nice were the Halloween event, where all you did was trade sweets to npcs for stuff or the first event I saw was the Teamwork event 2 years ago.

But god help them if they decide to repeat that stupid fireworks event.

Fishing Support in a box.. wish i could buy some of those other than just get it randomly. -.-; (very useful for the fisher too far away from the guild for support but not high enough for the fishing guild point items.)

chinese new year is usually celebrated during sometime around february because it goes by the lunar calender^^. just something that i want to point out anyways because the new year we know isn't the chinese new year.

about the quest like many had said if you don't want to do the quest then don't^^ no one is stopping you from doing them.

I know I'm a little late with this info, but if you checked the date on the game (not RL date), it is February. So Vana'diel is celebrating the Chinese New Year.

Uhh, considering this is a japanese game... i dont see why you think this event was because of the chinese new year.

What? you think they just happen to have a bunch of monkey's year before last on the year of the monkey, or birds last year on the year of the rooster? And the grandpappy of all dogs for the year of the dogs?

(I was born in the last year of the dog so i think it's pretty sweet they chose Fenrir this year /grin)

And yes, the Chinese new year isn't until Feb' but they've taken to holding a little celebration on the western new years day, kinda like our april fools day for the pagans among us ~.O

But as for the game being developed in Japan so why would they hold events for other countries question... surely you are aware that japan isn't christian, yet squeenix hold all these events to mark easter & Christmas, why not do it for their neighbours who also happen to play this game?

Also, they have to do something for the country their gil-selling network is based in.

All right, well considering the extremely long social, political, religious, not to mention (duh) geographical relationship that China and Japan share, I don't believe its that big of a stretch to make the connection between the Chinese New Year and this New Year's event.

Furthermore, I think that even though the Chinese New Year isn't until February, (or so I'm told) check this out. Say you and your friend, Brendan are going to a Chinese restaurant. You sit down, and what do you see 99% of the time? Those little placemats with the years and the various animals on 'em. So you say to Brendan, "What year were you born?" And when he innevitably replies, "1983" you say, "Dude, you're a boar or a warthog or whatever. It's not bad. Means your wise. Got that? Wise."

The bottom line.
# Jan 04 2006 at 5:07 PM Rating: Decent
Purpouse of this: Year of the Dog, hence Fenrir, entertainment.

Rewards: Random buffs, a fortune telling, and sometimes you might get what is called the "New Years Gift" with a japanese saying in the description, using this item gives you a fishing skill enhancement (exactly like the one from the guild) that lasts about 10 minutes. The New Years events really aren't for reward purposes, but rather just a small piece of entertainment after the large event (xmas) cools down.

And I agree with a few posters in here, if you don't like the events, don't do them. No one is forcing you too. I happen to find all of them quite entertaining and fun, except for this year's Xmas event. I was a bit dissapointed.

It is fun to watch little Taru chase Fenrir, but this event isn't all that boring it is exciting to see a grand summon like fenrir run about, and if you have some items you want to give away from a lower lvl and get buff's this sounds nice without having to use a mule to get rid of your stuff, course you might need it later, but look on the brightside...no need for a whm or blm or rdm for certain buffs :3

More then likely, this is just like the Chinese New Year event a while back involving the Monkeys, only this time it's fenrir. Its slightly amusing, but of no real benefit.

You don't like it? tough. We just came out of one of the major events (which I found extremely useful by the way - christmas warp FTW!). I'm just happy the servers are up (knock on wood)!
Second Event?

With a little luck they'll do a second event like last years "Moogles vs. Goblins" event where we got the stable teleport items, costume belts, and Kadomatsu. One of the best events ever!

New years events are only just for fun. There isnt any "new years" equipment, or quest involved.

just trade something random, and get a buff or a little present.

Everyone is trying to read into this a little too much.

Well I traded the summoners a vagabond's gloves, a crystal, and some food all I got was a message about having an excellent year this years. And a few buffs, enthunder, shell, pro....nothing worth the items. I am thinking there must be a certain item to be used here, maybe one of the collar neck items?

i'm in the same predicament as everyone else,we see these SMNs chasing a Fortatious Fenrir for hours on end and after talking to the SMNs all we get is "Wait up,Wait up,Wait up"...Ok some events dont take long to figure out but this one;damn there's absolutely no clues about this quest with the exception of helping the SMNs out;but then again, how!?if someone knows how to help these Tarus, plz post it and help us out!I like most of us like doing these lil' time killers they call "events"....just something to do to get your mind off the battlescene for a while...i did hear rumours they give buffs but then again,is that true!?

I guess i found out that...yes by trading items to the SMNs u get buffs and the "New year's Gift"
which is:Advanced Support Imaging for Fishing!
It lasts for 10 minutes just like image support
from the fishing guild;plus you can get another
New Years Gift while image support is in effect!I know simply because i mistakingly gave my Composite Bow+1 away to the SMN and never got it back...unlike crystals which would only give u various buffs for 1 minute or less and still get to keep the crystals...so remember not be be a very generous giver like me (; ;)"still kicking myself in the *** for it" and trade them regular low lvl,low price weapons to "catch the Fortuitious Fenrir" and you'll be guaranteed to get that ever deceiving New Years Gift!As for buffs, they're hardly worth it,since they wear off b4 you can take 20 steps...all in all,its fun to see how many quick free buffs you can get!Good luck to all!Plz post if you get something else...Those Kodumatsus in the cities are there why!?...

I know that if you trade items to the SMN he'll sometimes reward you with a package, which once opened gives you Fishing Guild support (basically crafting support, for fishing).
Ok
