Changes Made to the Time of Event

The "Trick or Treat" event scheduled to start on Oct. 20, 2005 17:00 (PDT) will commence as soon as the PlayOnline server maintenance scheduled on Oct. 20, 2005 from 8:00 to 18:00 (PDT) is complete. Depending on the maintenance operation, the start time of the event may be subject to change. We thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Nothing to comment on SE's timing of the Maintenance, but looking forward to getting my Horror Head and Trick Staff when I go back.

I just joined this christmas, so I didn't get a chance to get the halloween gear. Ontop of that, I didn't even get +1 on Dream Hat. And I love Event items o.o

try being accused of swearing in front of patients, getting angry at a nurse and slamming an ICU door which is automatic unable to be slammed specially when i have a huge cart behind me -_-. then getting suspended to a 2.5 hr job because of it....

but isn't this irrevelent to what is being discussed here? this is about FFXI not about someone's rl life. i am unhappy they had maintanainance but it is happening and you gotta deal with it.
SE sucks with maintenance
# Oct 20 2005 at 10:44 AM Rating: Good
I say this because I have played 2 other mmorpgs and each of them had a different way of dealing with maintenances.

The one game has a hour maintenance every morning. This may seem to suck but my whole time I played the game I don't remember a single server crash. Plus on top of that if they had to do maintenance or something and it took a day or so they gave everyone a free day of play.

The other game has a set maintenance every week for a 2 or 3 hours which keeps the servers from crashing.

To tell the truth I think SE should switch to a normal maintenance schedule which would have the servers down a hour or so instead of having them have them down half a day or more then have to have another one in a week and it being the same length because they messed something up.

EDIT: Please read the entire message first BEFORE posting, that way you won't have to make yourself out to be one of the people below who have failed to read it in its entirety. I do not claim that "if you are home at this time then you must be on welfare." You can work a second-shift job, or you could be Bill Gates. If this remark still offends some of you, then I highly suggest you develop what we in the "real world" call a sense of humor. If you are still questioning what I mean in saying so, then just try to look it up in a dictionary or an encyclopedia, I am sure these resources will be most helpful to you in your search. Also, I have been affected by some of these maintenances also, as unless you live in Syberia with nothing but polar bears around for excitement, then your claims are valid that "this doesn't affect me in the same way as you so get over it." However, I sincerely doubt this is the case, and you should find something else to do with your time.

No offence to most of the people on here but, and I say this with it being directed towards the 2 or 3 individuals that always rant about it with improper grammar skills and an obsession for using numbers as letters, don't you have anything better to do with your time than to complain about this? Like I said, it's cool if people hate all the maintenance, but it seems it's always the same people, with the same poor grammar skills, complaining about this, and they're always saying that it's "during peak North American hours." Now, this leads me to believe one of two things about these people. Either:

1. They are unemployed and are complaining that their welfare money's not going as far as it should because they cannot play for an hour or two.

2. They are only about 12 years old and never go to school, just so they can sit at home and play their online games.

If I'm wrong in this assessment, then I apologize. However, "peak hours" for me, and I'm sure most of the people in North America will agree with me on this, is either nighttime during the week, or on weekends, with the exception to those who work second- and third-shift jobs, in which case this is understandable. As for me personally, I work from 10 AM EST until at least 9:30 PM EST, so maintenance usually doesn't affect me. If I am at home when there's maintenance when I want to play, then I just do something that could be revolutionary and - get this - do something else. I have a PC and/or a PS2, so I either play another game or I go and see what's on TV.

Sorry if I seem a little angry and all, but I'm not really putting this up to annoy the hordes of people who are upset, just the ones that do nothing but complain. Ironic, though, considering this is probably my third post complaining about the people who do nothing but complain. Oh well, what goes around comes around, I guess.

Hello first post. It won't take much time. I agree with most of what you posted; specifically the do something else idea. I'm not going to comment on how people use grammar, because it irks some and not others. I am a little offended by the "welfare" idea. I'm disabled. Please don't assume you know eveything about others. Yet, still, i agree with the do something else idea, and if someone was on welfare; who are you to insinuate that is right or wrong? You seem to take up just as much time as the ones complaining about other's complaints. 'nuff said

Thank you for pointing out that you agree with some of what I have said. Disability, however, is a little different than welfare. Disability is because you are too injured to work, you are unable to work due to medical conditions, etc. Welfare is for someone who has a job, was laid off or otherwise lost it, and is paid for by the government. Disability is usually, but not always, paid for by the comapny that one works for. Welfare is distributed so that one can exist in society with the essentials to survive, not to play an online game, which is not neccessary to allow a human to exist (although some would argue otherwise.) Also, did I not mention to read the entire post, as I have already said that it is my third post complaining about the people who complain? I sincerely thank you, Captain Obvious.

Please read the entire post before commenting on this. It's cool if you have issues, but remember: if you want to complain about something, please make sure you know what you are complaining about. As for the European peak hours of usage, I don't actually know what they are, since I live in North America, most notably the Eastern Time Zone, if you read the entire post. Also, your jobs, since they start in the late afternoon and end late at night, are close enough to second-shift jovs that they are considered second-shift jobs. As for the whole work thing, open to close is just today, as I myself am usually a 12-10 guy, with the occasional 10-7 or 5-10 shift. And, as previously stated, if there is maintenance going on when you want to play, since you are both in college, consider that a chance to study, since more studying will only help you in the long run.

Also, in response to the second reply, once again working at night is a second- or third-shift job, and I can totally understand. Proper grammar's their choice, but they should at least use the proper form of the word that they wish to use. "They're" is to be used as an abbreviated form of "they are", while "their" is used to signify ownership, such as "his book" or "her shirt". "There" is a term of placement, used to signify a direction or a location, such as "over there" or "There's an angry elephant!" If they don't want to use proper grammar, then that's their choice. However, I find it hard to take someone seriously when every other word is misspelled, there are numbers where numbers should not be used, and when they cannot seem to grasp the concept of "their, they're, there." Also, the comment about welfare was purely in the sense of a joke, and if people do take offence to it, then they must be on welfare themselves, or at least know someone who is. If that is the case, then I am sorry for the one who is on welfare. If, though, they are using it to pay for this game to play it, then I wil be forced to ask you to stop. It is my money that goes to you for food, shelter, and clothing, and as such I do not wish to see it being squandered so foolishly. If it were being used for educational purposes, then I would not matter one way or the other. If you take offence to this last statement, then I thank you, you have proven my point.

There's a word for you, several actually...

Great...call my former job second shift if you must, but realize that second and third shift workers make up a large portion of the player population.

I didn't care about this part of your tirade to begin with, but since you seem to be obsessed with it. I really don't care all that much about grammar in and surrounding a game (I'll use the best I can personally most of the time but I can accept that I cannot control other people)! It's a game. I have low expectations for the quality of English used, though the numbers in words get annoying. If I can read it, I frankly let my annoyance stop there and blame the high school English teachers (and middle school) who aren't teaching spelling or grammar (mine didn't teach me grammar either, but I took the considerable trouble to learn). Are you an English professor (clearly not with the work hours you've listed)? I'm not either, I'm an academic (I'm training to go into a job where I do nothing but read and write). I read thousands of books and primary documents and write more books. If I can put up with bad grammar when it's not hurting anyone, you can too. I choose to worry about bad grammar and poor spelling at school and work, not in a videogame.

As for studying...to be honest, people with our years of schooling and our majors (biotechnology and history/information science) can use study time. But considering that much of it comes on a thursday evening and night (which is the designated "party night" aka night during which there are no quiet places or hours in the entire college town), it's more likely that we'll wind up calling the police on the drunk upstairs than get any studying done.
The timing isn't really anyone's fault...like the people with days off today or family out of town (yes I read those), this is simply unfortunate.

And if you find any typos in my post, please know that it's because I'm typing very fast (I get 60 words per minute at times) and I lack the benefit of spellcheck on my internet browser.

The words of the day are "****", "tactless", "insulting", "elitist", and "obsessed".

Seriously man, get a life...I post about once a week here unless someone absolutely prods me into doing so or I spot a friend's post/an interesting post at random. You seem to want to make a career of writing rant posts.

ACUTALLY, I'm just really, really bored at work doing all of this on my open-close shift, and decided this would be great fun, trying to annoy people and everything. And it worked. Man, this was really fun. You guys are so opinionated, I must have been the equivalent of a match in a powder keg. Oh well, I'm gonna get going now, and to take a quote from my favorite movie, "So long, and thanks for all the fish."

P.S. - If it's party time on campus, go to a party, spending all day cooped up in front of your PC/PS2 isn't too healthy for someone socially, mentally, and physically. You don't have to drink if you're not into it, but at least go and socalize. Trust me, you'll thank me for it in the long run.

I forgive you for being obscenely wrong in your assumptions.
The majority of my playtime is during those "peak hours" (as are most EU players because that IS their night and evening).

My fiance also plays during the 12pm-12am bracket, primarily during the mid-portion of this period (usually he goes to work at 5 or 6). He is a full time grad student and employed (his job is at night, as are most around a college campus). I am a senior in college and up until recently worked nights in a library (basically from the middle of the afternoon until we closed which runs anywhere from 5pm to 10pm based on location, day, and season) and flopped into bed after any given shift. We're both adults, we're not unemployed (except in my case since I just quit my old job because it would have interfered with school).
The majority of the people I know who play the game fall into the following categories:
College Students who only have free time in the evening or middle of the afternoon because they have to work night or late evening shifts
Europeans (and their entire evening and night is being turned into downtime)
Teenagers who log on as soon as they get home from school (about 2pm) and are kicked off the PS2 by their parents either at dinner or at 11 or 12 at night

Believe it or not...most of the players of this game who I know either work nights or have bedtimes.

If you get off work that late and go in that early, I'm sorry but you're not typical -- as far as work schedules go or as far as players of this game run.

I would really appreciate it if you didn't just assume that everyone who works nights is some whiny 12 year old.

While you are addressing the "peak hours" of North America I would agree with you that the peak hours for me are at night on week days and during the weekends when i'm not working.

But from a stand point of other people might take offense to the comments you made about thier life is a little rude. Oh and the gramar thing, this is a forum no one cares about thier gramar. if it were a formal essay or paper or something profession that they had to write I'm sure that it would be in correct gramar.

and one other thing maybe the people that consider thier peak time durring the day on week days, work at night. so you can't jsut go off and say that they aren't getting the full amount of thier wellfair.. to some people that may be an insult...

I do understand that these things are nessasary, but, after having 3 horrible days in a row, I am quite upset that I cannot play my favorite game. I undersand fully that:
1. I am not the only person this has happened to
2. They are good for the overall population of the game.
3. I as one person honestly do not matter to a company such as SE
4. This game (dispite its short notices) is still better than all other MMOs (in my humble opinion)
I just needed to vent... after the past 3 days I am just a little saddened by this turn of events.

Sigh, people people,

I know that it sucks that SE had to do ANOTHER maintenance during EU/NA prime time (I am EU so yes it hurts me as well) but is it really such a big deal?

Don't you people have real lives to attend to?
Me for once, I don't mind the updates. It gives me a good chance to hang out with friends and family and do some other fun stuff like watching a movie in he cinema's or just hanging out with friends.

Take the downtime to do something useful, remember that warning which you get before playing the game, not to forget about friends and family?

Get over it, FFXI is one of the best MMO's online and the maintenances are needed to make sure that we can get the most of our game.

Gaming is okay, but dont let it take over your life.

I really wish they'd refund money, for every active content ID on all servers. I'm sure they wouldn't care if they lost 25 cents for 100,000 IDs per downtime, but it'll add up.

Maybe they'd spend less time with duct tape repairs, and do it right once, instead of having to patch it up once every week.
Again?

Maintenance is necessary, this is to implement "Trick or Treat" event, you all have the right to say crap of this maintenance thing but again it's necessary to keep the game go smoothly.

1.) Read the information section. This maintenance has to do with MORE equipment upgrades for the "backbone" which I've been told is SOEA.
2.) If this TEN HOUR maintenance was for something as stupid as a freaking event, I'd burn my copy of the game.
3.) GLADLY will I talk crap about a maintenance that falls in the SAME 11 day period as THREE other maintenances.
4.) Competence is necessary to keep the game running smoothly.. NOT 9 million hours of maintenance in an 11 day period.
5.) /point /laugh

For 1 month, don't charge the base monthly fee for all current users. They can charge for the mules, but just get rid of the base fee for 1 month.

Uh.... I have one account and two mules.... if you're paying for two accounts and you "wish they'd do some of this crap during JP time", then I have this to ask of you.

1. Why do you have two accounts if you're "sick of this"?

2. If you have two accounts, either you use multiple instances of FFXI to have a mule sit there with a bazaar while you play OR you have so many characters that you had to get a second account which the latter possibility is highly unlikely. Maybe this is a sign from dog (sorry, I'm lysdexic) that you should actually play the way 99% of the people who own this game play, and follow the rules.

I get out of school early on the 20th and now they have the maintenance. Last week I had no school for a day and they had maintenance then too. I'm not happy about this maintenance being in our range of times. I may get rate downs on this but I'm tired of maintenance the only days I get off--and no, I won't skip school just to play the game. Hell, I only get two to three days per week on the game and watch all my friends rush past me in levels (my friend who started the same time I did is a ~70 DRK with multiple subs set up at 37+). Thursdays are usually the only weekdays I can get on (even if it is for like three hours).

This is what they're thinking...

We've gone over the posted time so often in the past during maintenance that we're not even going to pretend that we're going to adhere to the times we've arbitrarily set for (probably unecessary) maintenance operations we haven't really decided how to do yet but hope to improvise. We have no idea what we're fixing, but you can't yell at us for taking a long time doing it. You can be sure we're not going to finish early but you can probably bet (all of your gil) that we'll finish late and due to the wording of our annoucement we'll feel we don't have any obligation to tell you about it when it happens.
Thanks for the money, you have no choice but to cooperate with our plans...and we frankly don't care if you understand so long as you keep the money coming every month.

You notice a pattern?

SE hasn't done any maintenance on JP playtime in two months at least...100% of it has been during EU peak hours and NA peak hours

You know...as much as they have had maintenance in JP playtime in the past and as much as trolls (and even honest folk like myself) defend SE for having maintenance only ever scheduled in HUGE chunks during NA and EU playtime...I'm getting fed up
3/3 maintenances/shutdowns being excessive in length and during EU playtime and almost all of NA playtime...that's just absurd.

What do they want to fix NOW!? And why couldn't they do this maintenance when they did the hardware maintenance (supposedly to add more hardware)? Yes, that'd cut into JP playtime...but it'd be done already! And frankly I don't care if the whole world gets equal downtime...but my British friends have been shorted (this is the second time the game has been down for their entire day) and that makes me upset.

I can't say I've noticed a pattern, except that they seem to schedule maintenance on the only days I have off. Except once. If what you say is true, then this is grossly unfair. But, what can you do? If we complain, you know what they'll say: "you are not required to play the game as stated in the disclaimer." /angry /sigh /em calls his girlfriend over to watch movies

>.< I don't mind the down time normally, but the timing of this one is a slap in the face. I was suspended for telling a player what a worthless piece of **** he was. So the first day I'm allowed to log back in and the servers will be down for maintnence. The guy disbands after he caused our whole party about 2 hours to be wasted due to him ******** around trying to get people to fight aquariuis and then saying we're noobs and leaving us without a replacment in the middle of Boyada Tree. Which makes me mad when 1 person ruins several hours of playing for 5 other people yet no one keeps his actions accountable. And then I get suspended for using profanity....Which is widespread through out the servers, but it takes 1 pussified little cry baby to get someone like me that give and give to help others have a good time suspended.
hello?

in 10 days.. Are you forgetting the 10th and the 13th? over all there has been over 30 hours of downtime since the 10th
...er.. hang on.. I'll give you exact figures in a sec :P
... OK.. 10 hours were scheduled on the 10th (I use the term "scheduled" lightly) it was extended to 12 ..
on the 13th , this was actually SCHEDULED for 10 hours, was extended to 14 ..
..
Acutally. I guess 11 days.. I'm also counting the 8 hour period that the login server was down Sunday night (the 9th) ..
..
Tommorrow.. the 20th is scheduled for 10 hours.. but seriously.. how often do they have a maintenance of ANY type that they don't extend it?

Ok.. my figure was angry and wrong.. not 42 hours but close :\ .. 30+ hours in one month is excessive.. You can't tell me that everytime you login to see "We appologise for the inconvenience" that it doesn't make you want throw something at POL, SE, SOEA, and all involved parties in the downtime.

AND with this excessive downtime you'd think they have something to offer other than their weak appologies :\ ... Mebbie I AM just an impatient plick :P
