I'm not kidding, SoE's EQ2 servers have never been down for more than a few hours at most. In fact, with very rare exception, SoE's servers have been up all the time. All of their software upgrades are done off-server, and uploaded to the servers without any downtime at all. SE needs to take a lesson from a company who, frankly, does their backend work much more efficiently then them.

I love FFXI, don't get me wrong, but their techs and admins seem incapable of managing the exploding server populations and network load. In so many words, they've bitten off more than they can chew, and they know it. In the month of July alone there was over a full day of maintenance, which I feel I should be refunded for. I don't pay $16US a month to only be able to play 28/30 days a month. Admittedly I could be more upset if the fee were higher, and I still put up with it and play because it is so low. But with only a few changes to their server architecture and backend management SE could significantly improve customer satisfaction.

well... whereas I agree about the "bigger picture" and "11/12 months a year" thing, to complain so much about only playing 28/30 days a month is pretty ridiculous. I mean think about it, are you really that desperate to play? There are more things in life. Sanctuary of Zi'Tah is a beautiful place, but there's areas like that all over the USA and possibly even your backyard if you just stop to take a look.

I'm not actually complaining about it being down What upsets me is these guys saying oh it's only 53 cents a day well days add up And hey if it's only 53 cents a day everyone that feels that way send me 53 cents a day LOL I'll find a use for it /em snickers

Heck I could care less anymore personally I’m letting Public Service Look into it I mean you wouldn’t pay for your phone service for 24/7 have it down so much without complaining or your cable Service or even your ISP service this Game Service has went beyond reproach

It isn't a matter of desperation It's a matter of getting what I pay for, entitlement to play when I want not when they decide I can.

lol...

FIRST off whine all you want...but this downtime happens to be primarily for server UPGRADES...so i dunno about you but i dont know about hardware upgrade being possible without shutting it down..

SECONDLY i dont recall the servers being down for a full 48 hours in july...but i may be wrong...and even at that a refund is just stupid... if you pay $16 for FF a month then you pay $0.533333 a day... multiply that by 2 and you got a $1.06666 that SE owes you...and if that money really matters that much to you, go check your couch cushions or as a friend for a single dollar or work an extra 10 mins (assuming u make $6 an hour)

rust my rant on ranting >.>

People Like you infuriate me, stop looking at the small picture of days, and add these days up in a year you’re paying for a month not to play. I don’t see anywhere that this is minuscule by any stretch of the imagination, no one pays for 12 months of play to only receive 11, or likes to at least I don’t.

Not quite true. During the first couple months EQ2 server (and Galaxies for that matter) bounced quite a bit. They even had the EQ2 servers down for almost an entire weekend (2nd or 3rd). (Trouble w/ a patch.) But they did tack on a couple extra days onto my next billing cycle to compensate.

Still, I managed to survive and play on. XD

I'm with whoever said that the scheduled maintenance is not a problem but not being able to download the updates and play for an additional day is.

Also, the last 18hour maonitenance was what-- 2 weeks ago or less? Afterwards I could not get a solid download of files, kept getting booted and would have to retry. During the 36hours or so that I couldn't check my mule, I lost near 200k due to dead cuttings and such. I don't wanna hear it can't happen.

If I may make a suggestion, GuildWars is a good game, free to play. About $50 USD for the game. Not a bad deal. It sure helps to have something like that during long FFXI maintenance days.

GuildWars does an update, they send a system message to all users saying there is an update available, close game when you're ready [lol] and restart to download files. You can finish what you're doing and all. Nice.

Something I just thought of that would quell the masses that seem to be seething with hatred at not being able to log on to an online game and play it for hours nonstop. If you have a PS2, and you think you'll die unless you interact socially through a computer monitor with a million other people while playing a game, then go play some .hack, whenever I'm really bored and looking for a good game to play, that usually hits the spot and - here's the best part - it SIMULATES the life that some of you seem to be lacking without the POL or FFXI servers online.

Sorry if it seems sarcastic, but I recently got into playing them again and figured someone's bored enough to look for something to do, so there you go.

you know this sux a$$. i really was trying to get my RNG to 40 asap this week. maintly because i accidentally got the drop for the AF1 questthe other day. was taking my wife (IRL wife plays with me aswell, Dezzerae) through ranguamont pass to get her ice light and her vahzl crystal. i got lost and she ended up getting aggro from 3 evil weapons. i wasnt worried she is 44war/nin and i was my 60 rdm so ofcourse i pwnedn them in a hurry. we both got the glittersand drop. i saw it was rare/ex so i decided to look it up on allakazham to see what quest it was for. then i was like sweet. i ended up lvling my rng from 10-33 with 2k tnl 34 in 3 days. i like rng even with the nerf. MAINT. SUCKS!

Please, don't be angry at me for changing the rant subject, but this has been bothering me beyond all measure: The times they post are not specific at all! 8:00 PDT to 2:00 PDT is not very clear, at least from my perspective. Have they started this in the A.M or P.M of "8:00 PDT"?
Secondly, Which area is this time zone based in: Japan, or California? (Or maybe i'm completly off)

Or this may be a bit easier to reply with:
Can someone(or some people) tell me when exactly the maintence started, and what city you're in/time zone. Knowing this will help me log online fast enough to claim Argus before anyone else on my server, so please, {Help me out!}

Not likely. This is a POL onry maintenance. Nothing is being done to FFXI right now. Only reason we can't play is because you need to get through POL to get to FFXI.

I have some tree cuttings which I wanted to plant but am worried that with long server maintenance like this, it might wither and die. Does anyone know how long in between checking plants before it dies?

Hmm 2 very long maintenance session within a month! Last time (thankfully not tree cuttings), my plants died.

i sit here and read how wild you guys get into your conversations, doing math, telling us to play with our dogs.. like.. dudes.. chillout

its like you guys wanna jump through the computer screen and punch someone in the face... sometimes i wish i could tho..

like the fooker named Rgn from HNMLS Stelvia in Garuda who supposedly took my picture and posted it online telling all the HNMLS's not to invite me because im mean. Just because my LS got the claim of bloodtear and didnt give his friend (who wasnt even in the fight) the drop. can you imagine how spoiled and stupid this little kid can be? I mean ok, Stelvia is known to be one of the best HNMLS's in Garuda if im not mistaken, but how big can your head be to think that you can get any drop from any monster in the game because of that. First of all he was lucky to even be in the PT cuz if i was leader i woulda kicked him, since everyone but him in the party was my LS. and Rgn if you're reading this, or any of your Stelvia buddies, you're a ***. Post my Mithra somewhere, actually i'll tell everyone -- i'm a mithra on Garuda named Mrvex and im mean! -- by the way he came along because he wanted to skill up with my LS, then bloodtear popped. we shoulda just left you stranded you little prick.

i know that had nothing to do with the big subject of FFXI not being up at the moment, but theres a little something you can read to waste time.

Mrvex,
You sir are the bulbous zit on the *** of Garuda. You constantly /sh complete stupidity in lower jeuno seemingly 24/7. You have established yourself as one of the ppl to avoid on our server. I think you are trying very hard to be a notorious *** at least subconsciously. You behave like a child that does not get enough attention at home so he seeks negative attention by treating others like crap. You always interject your overly negative opinion into conversations that have nothing to do with you and you seem to have some bizarre sort of superiority complex based on absolutely nothing. You are not smart enough, knowledgeable enough, or useful enough to afford such a superior attitude. I think if it were possible to query the characters that are on the most blists, yours would be at the top of the list as being blisted by more ppl than anyone else. I think I can safely speak for several thousand other ppl that play ffxi on garuda…shut your stupid pie hole.
maintenence
# Aug 08 2005 at 3:25 PM Rating: Decent
I may not enjoy server maintenence, but 1: My GF loves it, it keeps me off the game, and 2:It allows me to work on RL "maintenence. Wether it's an hour or a week as long as it ensures better gameplay/content I can wait....I guess. I mean really people, yes, you pay to play, but... do you really want to pay for a peice of poo? i sure dont there is a thing called life goin around outside your lil FF XI happy box, go check it out for a while. The game will be here when you get back. And will be better than before. remember, SE only has a limited amount of human fodder to throw at the machine, we are a world-wide mass, think of it this way... SE is like a muzzle loader, where we are a Gatlin gun. the SE people need time to put our world in order, if we dont give them that time it will be chaos, mass hordes of nekkid people running through the streets with weed eaters and live chickens, and the dwarves will start spanking the baboons again. ok, i think i am done ratteling on.

THE SMART FOOKER

Quote:
I think that it's good that they are doing these updates. If they never changed the software, we wouldn't have all the cool new items and features that are there now. And, if they never updated the hardware, we wouldn't be able to have as many poeple playing as we do. Ok, so it's a day long. I only have one thing to say about that. There is other stuff to do in life, and it isn't healthy to sit in front of a PC or a PS2 all day playing games. Yeah, I check this site occasionally and do post a few things on here, but it's because I'm at work, and I can only do so many things "job-related" before I run out of them, so then I look at this and tell my boss "It helps me keep up-to-date on game info, seriously." If you don't like the fact that even if you pay to play a game, and there's still updates being done on it, then I have 2 simple solutions for you:

1. Learn to deal with the fact that not everything runs "100% smooth 24 hours a day, 7 days a week," or at the very least stop griping about it publicly.

B. Stop playing the game in general, and save us all a lot of time listening to complaints.

Yeah, some things about the game make me mad too, but I usually just tell the 3 or 4 guys I work with about it, because I know noone here wantsa to hear my thoughts on something pertinent only to me and my character.

That's just my two cents, take it or leave it.

do you notice anything?
lemme highlight it for you bcuz im bored and i have no life
