FINAL FANTASY XI Update (Jul. 19)

Wow, this thing is huge. [Event-Related] *A new chapter has been added to "Chains of Promathia." *A new quest called "The Fellowship Quest" has been added. Upon completion of this quest, the player will receive an item used to call an NPC. -The NPC may not be called during NPC escort quests, but may be used along with beastmasters' pets, summoners' avatars, and dragoons' wyverns. -The NPC may only be called in certain field areas. -The NPC may fight monsters, gain experience, and level up with the player. -A player fighting with an NPC fellow will receive only 70% of the usual experience points gained for solo battles. -The NPC may be called only when there are less than six members in the player's group. A party may contain a maximum of three NPC fellows, along with the three players who have called them. -If the NPC's level exceeds that of the player, its status will be adjusted to match the player's level. -The NPC's equipment will occasionally change after fighting several battles. -The NPC will leave if the player: -temporarily logs out to PlayOnline -logs out -enters a different area -is KO'd -All NPCs in a party will leave if the party attempts to increase its total number of players and NPCs to seven. *Several new quests have been added, including: -A quest in which the player may acquire headgear that resembles various beastmen -Rematches with mammets and the Mithran sin hunters And more! *An NPC that tells the player's fortune regarding titles and other "elements" has been added in Mhaura. *Character title selection has been changed in the following ways: -It now costs less gil to change a player's title. Also, it now costs no gil at all to check the player's list of available titles. -The NPC bard that changes player titles will now sing out the player's title just before changing it. -After changing the player's title, the NPC bard will sing out the new title. Nearby PCs will also be able to hear the new title. -The player will now have the option to have a random title selected for him or her at no cost once each day (Earth time). -Titles earned by defeating NMs are now available for selection not just at Selbina and Mhaura, but also at Kazham and Rabao. *A chocobo riding game has been added. The player must deliver a chocobo from the chocobo stables where the quest was offered to a designated nation. *Players are now able to talk to an NPC and check the remaining time until they are able to reenter the battlefield for the ENM quests "Pulling the Strings" and "Automaton Assault." *"Return Ring" and "Homing Ring" have been added to the list of items that may be earned by exchanging conquest points. *If a player has completed the quests to get a pair of Mannequin Pumps or a Minstrel's Dagger but disposed of the item he earned, the player may now reacquire the item at the same place he attained it. *Mythril Plate Armor has been added to the list of equipment that may be stored as a key item. *A new NPC that will trade items for treasure earned by defeating Lumorian monsters has been added. [Battle-Related] *Players are now able to earn experience from monsters of a wider level range than previously possible. Experience points earned by defeating "decent challenge" and "easy prey" monsters will also increase in some instances. *Experience chain bonuses in level-restricted areas of Chains of Promathia are now determined by the level of the player while in that area, rather than the player's actual level. *Monster locations have been adjusted, particularly in Chains of Promathia areas. The following areas will be affected: Bibiki Bay, Uleguerand Range, Attohwa Chasm, Newton Movalpolos, Promyvion – Holla, Promyvion – Dem, Promyvion – Mea, Promyvion – Vahzl, Lufaise Meadows, Phomiuna Aqueducts, the Sacrarium, Riverne – Site #A01, Riverne – Site #B01, the Garden of Ru'Hmet, Ro'Maeve, the Boyahda Tree, the Den of Rancor, the Shrine of Ru'Avitau, Kuftal Tunnel *The damage and accuracy of a player's ranged attack are now calculated based on the distance of the player from the monster. This determination varies from weapon to weapon, as does the ideal distance for maximum damage. In addition, the higher the monster's level is with regard to the player, the less damage will be dealt with a ranged attack. *The player's enmity now decreases when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack. *Weather will no longer have an effect on the distance a player can be detected for monsters that detect based on the use of magic. *Several new notorious monsters have been added. *Creatures summoned by monsters (excluding elementals) have had their names changed to "(Monster's name)'s Avatar" for consistency. *The strength of monster techniques has been adjusted, particularly in Chains of Promathia areas. *A player who is KO'd, revived, then while still in a weakened state KO'd again will now, after a second reviving, temporarily experience a weakened attack and accuracy loss for magic and ranged attacks. *Before the update, a player who fought a monster without using auto-attack would retain his claim on the monster, even if he was KO'd in battle due to poison, etc. This has been fixed so that when the player dies, the monster becomes unclaimed. *Before the update, a monster that was claimed by a party or alliance would occasionally go unclaimed when magic or a weapon skill was used on the monster as the monster moved out of range before the magic or weapon skill could strike. [Item-Related] *Trading a wijnruit and 99 ninja tools to a certain NPC can now earn the player a toolbag. This item may be gathered in stacks of twelve, essentially increasing the player's ninja tool inventory capacity twelvefold. *New synthesis recipes have been added. *Prices at guilds have been changed to reflect the amount of each item the guild currently has in stock. The cost may rise to a maximum of five times the original price. *Some of the treasure items earned from notorious monsters in the Boyahda Tree have been changed. *The way that the following items are acquired has been changed: Archer Ring, Leaping Boots, Emperor Hairpin, Peacock Charm In addition, players may receive an EX/Rare or EX item with the same attributes from the monsters who previously dropped each of the above items. *The effects of the following items have been altered: Poison Potion, Venom Potion, Paralyze Potion, Sleeping Potion, Silencing Potion, Blinding Potion, Vitriol, Instant Warp, Bastok Mines gate glyph, Bastok Markets gate glyph, Port Bastok gate glyph, Eastern San d'Oria gate glyph, Western San d'Oria gate glyph, Northern San d'Oria gate glyph, Windurst Waters gate glyph, Port Windurst gate glyph, Windurst Woods gate glyph, New Year's gift, Cantarella, Black Drop, Muting Potion, Invitriol, Warp Cudgel, Trick Staff II, Treat Staff II, Teleport ring: Holla, Teleport ring: Dem, Teleport ring: Mea, Teleport ring: Vahzl, Teleport ring: Yhoat, Teleport ring: Altep, Memento Muffler, Gargoyle Boots, Zoolater Hat, Root Sabots, Aries Mantle, Anubis's Knife, Oscar Scarf, Kinkobo, Carpenter's Belt, Blacksmith's Belt, Goldsmith's Belt, Weaver's Belt, Tanner's Belt, Boneworker's Belt, Alchemist's Belt, Culinarian's Belt, Fisherman's Belt, Counter Earring, Tactical Ring, Wing Gorget, Healing Feather, Spirit Lantern, Astral Pot, Homing Ring, Return Ring, Absorbing Shield, Tavnazian Ring, Ducal Guard's Ring, Maat's Cap, Kingdom Stables Collar, Republic Stables Medal, Federation Stables Scarf, Cursed Beverage, Cursed Soup *The item "Timepiece" has been added to the list of special items a player may receive 100 days after participating in the Vana'diel Adventurer Recruitment Program. *The following item names have been changed in the English version: Panzer Mask -> Panther Mask Panzer Mask +1 -> Panther Mask +1 Amemit Mantle -> Amemet Mantle Amemit Mantle +1 -> Amemet Mantle +1 *The item name "Comet" has been changed to "Little Comet." *An attribute of the following item has been changed: Darksteel Pick +1 Delay:312 -> Delay:303 [System-Related] *Region Info may now be viewed from all areas. *Messages may no longer be sent using /tell to a player on the user's blacklist. *Along with the introduction of the Fellowship Quest, players may now combine text commands with to target their NPC fellows and execute their desired actions. In this case, experience may still be gained if certain conditions are met, just as if the player had entered the match from the start. Also, if a player enters during a match, both forces will receive a message notifying them of the new entry. The player must have the following in order to enter a match already underway: -A Ballista License -Enough gil to enter the match -The minimum level required for the match being played -A player who has just entered an official match or a match in Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba that was already underway will temporarily be placed under "Preparing for Battle" status. -Players may now borrow the key items "Ballista Earring" and "Ballista Band" free of charge from the Pursuivant in Ru'Lude Gardens. Ballista Earring: When in possession of this item, the player will receive information about the next Ballista match and the entry registration time when entering San d'Oria, Bastok, Windurst, or Jeuno from one day prior to the match (Vana'diel time) until the end of the entry period. Ballista Band: When in possession of this item, the player will be given the choice of whether to keep or throw away the first Petra he quarries. Ownership of a Ballista License is not required to borrow the above items. The player may return the items simply by speaking to a Pursuivant. -Players are no longer able to adjust Petra selection settings in Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba. The player will be given the option of what to do with the first Petra quarried only when in possession of the new key item "Ballista Band." -The following rules have been changed from special rules to standard rules. -Camp locations will change when the number of participants in a match is 40 or less. -The number of Rooks will be reduced to two when there is a significant difference in the number of players on each side. -Players will now receive experience points for participating in an official match. -The system of "Open Entry" for official matches, in which all adventurers were allowed to join the force with the smallest number of participants, has been done away with and replaced by a system called "Temporary Entry," in which players may join a force regardless of allegiance. However, the player's entry is temporary, and similar to Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba's "Auto-Balance" feature, the players may be redistributed for balance when the match begins. -In Ru'Lude Gardens, the player will be able to view Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba's reservation status. Reservations for the next two days (Earth time) will be shown. -The NPC Tillecoe will now inform the player of the match's level restriction when a match at Diorama Abdhaljs-Ghelsba is set to allow general participation. -Temporary items will now be distributed at the start of official matches held at the Pashhow Marshlands. -A section of the Ballista rulebook that is read out by the Pursuivant has been changed. -The rate of success for Foe Lullaby and Horde Lullaby has been lowered for players with bard as a support job. -A limit has been imposed on the amount of HP that can be absorbed by Bloody Bolts' HP Drain effect during Ballista.

does this mean rangers will be useless against high level hnms? i would imagine being 10-15 levels lower has a dramatic affect on damage.

It sounds like the items such as "Emperor's Hairpin" will remain as just Rare, and the NMs that dropped these items will instead drop a differently named, rare/ex item that has the same stats. In other words, no you won't be stuck with a hairpin you are borrowing.

Now, let's all go get a nice big tub of popcorn, some drinks, and watch jeyo and yolandada on Fenrir server kill their first post-patch Argus. Or let's go watch them or Bewers kill Leaping Lizzy or Valkurum Emperor. I'm sure I'll fall off my chair laughing when they get a rare/ex item and freak out.

Hmm if they're making those 4 drops ex or rare/ex I can understand them adding another way to get boots/ring since these are used to craft winged boots and snipers. But why would they make Hairpin and charm rare/ex and still add a way to get hte normal drops if atm there isnt any real use for that? (suppose charm if its a BCNM drop might make it more accessable if argus respawn doesnt change)

Still its a good start sadly gilsellers have plenty of other options, atm on midgard they spend more time shouting they're selling overpriced striders and venomous claws they dont camp these as much since they get HNM ><
Not really gimped...

Omfg Everyone like "Noo the end of nin tanks!!" but it's not. I'm a PLD68 so I really hate NIN's takin my PT's but I'm sick of everyone keeping this idiocy in mind.

NIN's can keep hate very easy, it just takes NIN tools like Hojo and Jubaku. Use those a few times in battle and you'll have no prob, including voke and utsusemi. Keep in mind when u CAST utsusemi it get's hate. Every shadow lost loses the hate u gained with utsusemi. Almost every PT a NIN is in, a THF is too. Post-60 TA Dancing Edge is pretty good, around 300-600 on Hobgoblins from my experiance, and Shark bite for 600+ with just TA.

So I see this not effecting NIN very much.

Stick that in your pipe and smoke it gil sellers!

btw, sorry about all you who dont gil sell, and just sell these things to make a profit, dont worry, this just makes the bcnm non rare ex version even more expensive. Or possibly less.... oh well, still plenty more ways to make money.

As happened before, through popular belief,Nin is believed to be gimped. However, if you have a nin who has much trouble holding hate now that's not a very good Nin. Also, let's not forget that Nin being gimped doesnt just affect Nin.

That's right, it affects each and every one of us. Take for example, Exp pting without Nin tanking. Lower Jeuno shouts would read something like this 5/6, need PLD!! Every pt would be a PLD which would not be very smart. With regard to nin was never meant to tank that is untrue. INITIALLY it was not but they added much tanking gear for NIN such as Arhats evasion and enmity, you get my drift they liked the idea when people did it and made it into a tank. Not only would a true gimp be bad for exp, certain NM would be hard to impossible to tank without a nin such as Charybdis. And finally, Do not knock nin before the patch is out. You do not know how bad the enmity change will be and therefore cannot call them gimped yet.

And BTW, I am not a Nin but a very concerned sam that the game will be in trouble with only a PLD to tank every single EXP pt.
RE: dont knock nin yet
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:33 PM Rating: Decent
well, as i said before you got nothing to worry about. i agree, if pld was the only tank this game woud be doomed. tho i think sam and monk were itentionaly made to be tanks like warrior. sam has third eye and A in parry. mabye they were made to be a perry tank, as monk is A in vit and has really high hp. but they just dont cut it as tanks and make much better DD, i think nin and pld are the only jobs tha can really tank well mid - end game besides 74war/37nin, witch would also get ruined if they gimped ninja that bad. to many people would be lfg if you needed a pld. thfs would never get invites at all. but i think with a thf, and useing your ninjijtu is going to allow you to still hold hate if you use it all, mabye the point of makeing it stack in the patch :P mabye this is a stupid attemtp to take the gil out of the inflated economy lol
YAY!

Dont Knock Nin Yet
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:23 PM Rating: Decent
Something messed up my first post. Anyway, I was going to say if NIN is actually nerfed it affects each and everyone of us. Think of EXP Pting and shouting injeuno along with 3 other pts trying to get a PLD your level because that would be the only tank left if Nin is gimped beyond tanking. Then imagine trying to tank NMs such as Charybdis with no Nin. It would be hell needing a pld for every pt and tanking certain NM with only pld.

So, before you knock nin consider two things. There are many instances in which you will need and wish Nins could still tank if they are nerfed beyond tanking. And second, NO ONE knows until the patch comes out how much hate will be affected by the change, so saying they can't tank now is naive.

And before you say I am a whining Nin, I am not. I am just a concerned sam that people will think Nins are no good and very worried for FFXI if NIN can no longer tank. Oh, and one more thing. Do not bring up that nonsense that Nins were NEVER meant to tank. Initially, SE did not intend for NIN to be a tank but then they themselves commended players for coming up with blink tanking, liked the idea, and developed items to help nin tank such as Arhats with evasion and enmity.

That Shadows is pulling off hate now is .. the end a NIN tanks....They already had some problems with hate now that the shadows decrease hate it's going to be a pain to be NIN tank. Like some1 said before, SE never wanted NINs to be tanks but the question is what plans do SE got with NIN... The dmg is too low for being a DD... Hmmm...

NIN/BLM {Do you need it?}

I think that utilizing the elemental magic ninjutsu will be a much bigger role in the life of a NIN now that they can't tank as effectively.

Well... Paladins lose some enmity with each hit they take, non?

The NINs should still be able to tank, like Phasen says. Using the elemental wheel, some more gil, and the other bloody ninjutsu that I rarely see NINs whip out.

I have, and still do intend on leveling NIN to 37 sometime. ^^;

Nin will now be the PERFECT sub for thf/rng/non-tank War/and maybe MNK and SAM. Think of it, max DD, and they will loose hate when the mob hits the shadows --- WOW -- THF and RNG will be DD Kings.
RE: o.O What's going to happen with NIN?
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:39 PM Rating: Decent
Wrong. That'd be like a BLM nuking all he wants dealing all the damage and losing hate from blink. (They already lose hate from blink absorbed shadows, but not enough to pull hate off without a tanks help.) However, if it did completely nerf nin and the utusemi lost hate was huge then this might be viable, but very unlikely.

But this is all hypothetical and not worth discussing without knowing how much hate is lost without the patch, so i suppose speculating about king of DD is pointless.
RE: o.O What's going to happen with NIN?
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:21 PM Rating: Decent
well, i think your half right half wrong. i think ninjas can still tank but its going to cost more gil. youll have to use the elemtal wheel much more. also you'll have to more likely have a thf in the party. so mabye this is an attempt to get thfs higher? i dunno. im not gonna say a ninja cant tank till i know it cant. cause they dont say how much emity is lowered. it might be something stupid like -.1 lol
RE: o.O What's going to happen with NIN?
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:27 PM Rating: Decent
no no this is to get rid of NIN tanks, not to change the way in which they can tank. NIN should not ever have been tank. WAR/MNK, PLD/WAR and MNK/WAR are now the only real viable tank options, and I hope we see more monk tanks popping up as they rock *** if their guard skill is capped or high. War/mnk was always a better thank than war/nin because they can hold hate better and counterattack + gaxe is awesome, along with teh HP boost and VIT. War have crappy VIT without mnk. What will they do with NIN? Well nin are already better DD than you give them credit. Nin just needs to sub blm and nuke/melee boom boom mega damage without fear of getting hit with utsusemi.

Another stupid comment from some naive noob who doesn't know anything about how much enmity a nin will lose. SE has said after they did not Initially mean for NIN to be a tank, they said they liked the idea and developed gear made for nin tanking.

It is people as stupid as this, who has already determined nin is no longer a tank, that worry me.

lol i agree with you there. i am a nin tank and i still beleive we will be able to tank but, the fact is that from players of FF reading the update and are prob. thinking nin will suck @ tank now. and they will no longer get invites, i may be wrong but the whole reason that i am a nin is because they are awsome tanks and save alot of down time.i want be a nin tank not a nin DD so i guess we will find out soon..
ranged attacks
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:16 PM Rating: Decent
this is how I think the new ranged attack stuff will work. For guns, you have to be close in real life to be accurate and do more damage, so guns will probably be better point blank. Archery will probably be more accurate and definately more powerful from a further distance. Crossbow will probably be mid range to be accurate and powerful if not needing to be point blank like guns. Throwing will probably be mid range as throwing from up close is kinda inaccurate if you think about it.

some thoughts
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:15 PM Rating: Decent
ok so in general this update will help everyone in some way shape or form (aside from those pathetic bottom feeding scum that make IRL profit from our lovely game) Here are some thoughts I have.

*First is a question, if anyone knows yet where will this NPC helper quest be obtainable from?

*I'm also thinking that if everyone decides to have an NPC helper it will make it that much harder to get a real party because more people will be off in a duo with their new friend. Then again, it will make more things in this game a little more soloable, esp if "the amount of exp from EP and DC mobs will change a bit" I always thought it was a little retarded how you can virtually solo nothing in this game past lvl 20 this may even things out a bit but may also introduce new problems, a double edged sword it is I guess.

*I just sold my Mrthril gear from leveling drk because I got my entire AF set, it truly sucks I couldn't store it before because I'm a packrat and would have liked to have it on hand for future lvl capped things etc, so props to that I guess -_-

*"*The player's enmity now decreases when a shadow image created by Utsusemi is absorbed by an attack"...
This is interesting, I wonder to what extent this will allow ninjas to "tank" as they did before if they can't hold hate as good with shadows any longer having a thf in the party mix for sata will become almost mandatory, which will make thf+nin parties even more annoying. (not dissing thfs and nins by the way, they kick ***. Its just that sometimes with certain people that setup can be foolishly annoying. It largely depends on the players I guess.) This may be good and bad for nijas because they can now store more tools, but will need more help tanking maybe, I suppose we shall see.

*The length of this update sucks >< But it looks like a very positive one overall so I think the downtime is worth it.

So yes those were my random thoughts with regard to what I read, now I will go to my former Game addiction, Final Fantasy Tactics, which I played all around the clock before FFXI came out.

share with me your thoughts on the things I mentioned because I know we are all likely very bored now anyhow :P
RE: some thoughts
# Jul 18 2005 at 2:52 PM Rating: Decent
Reading through the posts and I picked out the comment that nin + thf will become mandatory. This does not seem viable to me because the amount of enmity lost is unknown. Also, My speculation with obviously no truth attached is mage lose some hate when a blink shadow is absorbed, and it is very very minute a tank will still have to work to pull off the hate. I think this is the same thing, only for other DD such as RNG and War that /nin. So i've said this many times, Don't count out nin tank or mandatory combos or think now Nin as it meant to be played. Wait till the update.
this is all hypothetical, as you implied
# Jul 18 2005 at 3:19 PM Rating: Decent
I never have nor will I stop considering Ninjas as tanks, as they are formidable tanks. I was also just speculating about how much extra hate would be lost, thats why I said "We shall see"
I'm also sure that whatever difference this may make to a ninjas ability to hold hate can be easily compensated for by the actions of other people in the party, thus my reference to a greater need for SaTa.

I was in a party yesterday with a ninja who was very enthusiastic about this whole deal and the issue about losing enmity came up. It crossed my mind and I posted it, thats all :)

I also believe that the idea of ninjas were never meant to be tanks is absurd. The bottom line is "Well hey they do tank, they can tank, so who cares what SE intended for them?"

Ultimately I suppose its up to peoples preference in what they want for parties. I'm Drk at present time and construct a lot of parties. To me having A pld tank in there or having a nin tank hold identical value. Again thats just my preference. Yeah this is getting long winded now so I'll stop. Thanks for the reply.

The way that the following items are acquired has been changed:
Archer Ring, Leaping Boots, Emperor Hairpin, Peacock Charm
In addition, players may receive an EX/Rare or EX item with the same attributes from the monsters who previously dropped each of the above items.

God damnit...I'm borrowing an emperor hairpin from a friend. If this is changed to a rare/ex item, he's going to be unhappy, and I'm going to be out 700k. Beautiful.

Dude, chill out. They said the way you can acquire those items has changed, not that they are making those items RARE/EX. The patch notes clearly state that those mobs are now going to drop new Rare/Ex items with the same stats. Your friend's hairpin is going to be exchangeable still. ^^

The NPC may not be called during NPC escort quests, but may be used along with beastmasters' pets, summoners' avatars, and dragoons' wyverns.

As a beastmaster this could be fun. Area mobs or jugs and my npc = 3 ppl pt. Hmm wonder if my npc pal can be a beastmaster too and charm something ;) that would he funny.

A player fighting with an NPC fellow will receive only 70% of the usual experience points gained for solo battles.

Well all bst are aware of the 30% xp cut, the question is would that be a 60% xp cut. So taking on a T 120-200 ( gotten 200 of a T once, it was insane no chain either):

(xp*(Npc + pet)) = (xp*0.4) or 40%xp 4u
120*(0.40 after NPC and pet cut) = 48xp
160*(0.40 after NPC and pet cut) = 80xp

or would it be ((xp*30%)*30%) = 49%xp 4u
120*(0.3 NPC cost) = 84*(0.3 Pet cost) = 58.8xp
200*(0.3 NPC cost) = 140*(0.3 Pet cost) = 98xp

This could be a bad thing for bst since smn, and drg don't have a pet cost. Wish they would make jug pet not be counted as a pet cost since its summoned.

i wouldn't use a merc to xp as bst, my bst is 65 and it would really mess up xp bad senec they dont have leave. but if you were farming or something then they would kick ***. im more interested on this as a thf sence itll give me an assassin partner and increase my damage a lot :)
