Jeez everyone's so up-tight about the updates! Don't you people have a life? Is there nothing you can do in the downtime like say, clean your room/apartment/house, or maybe walk your dog that you've been ignoring ever since you got FFXI? How about calling your family that hasn't heard from you in 2 months? Can't you people break yourself away from thinking about this game for just a couple of hours every week?

It doesn't matter when they bring the game down, it will be on someone's primetime. It's typical American behavior (yes, I'm American too) to assume that it's SE's responsibility to ensure we are never inconvenienced. I hear all this stuff about favoritism... what the hell is that? You expect them to change their maintenance time when NA starts buying the game, and call it favoritism when they DON'T do it?!? It's not favoritism, it's accountability. Who here knows exactly when the maintanence happens every week? That's right, raise your hand. Everyone does, you can bank on that. 'nuff said.

Most of us realize that bringing the servers down any time is during someone's prime time. Our complaints are that its <i>always</i> during our prime time. They do the 3 servers a day, 2 days a week for a month maintainance ever 4 months or so. Why not do it during the american PT, then the Japanese PT, then the European PT. You know, on a cycle like that so we're not always the ones to miss out on our prime. I could be totally wrong about this, but aren't the actually physical servers in Japan anyway? Doesn't that mean that the techs are working in the middle of the night? If they're normally nine-to-fivers, wouldn't they like to do their work during their normal work schedual?

Hmmm, makes you kind of wonder why they even bother having a "test server" if they arent going to actually do any testing on it. You would have thought that they might have tested this update before releasing it and solved some problems before shutting down paying players day after day... Just a thought.

Ok, None of this has been mentioned, but I think about this worthless maintenance YET AGAIN....

1) BLMs having no scythe, YET its in combat skills should be fixed as well... Why mention it if we can't wield it???? Is the AH entirely going to be fixed regarding this problem? The AH is only going to fix "signatures"??? Thats it? Why not my scythe???????

2) Nomad Moogles?? What nomad moogles? Weren't they supposed to be placed in Mhaura and Selbina? If so, I couldn't find them.

3) the gil farmer problem hasnt been solved yet...
"We're investigating into the issue further. Please be patient." is a worthless excuse I can not tolerate regarding this issue any longer. Actions speak louder than words.

I am agreeing with a lot of people saying it should be rotated to be between NA and JP times, because we always have to be the ones waiting. This is really ridiculous. I paid 15 bucks for a game, not for weekly maintenance. Where's the customer service????

These are almost certainly NEW items, either to be found in Promathia areas or crafted using new synths. It didn't say you could use every scythe [just like as a RDM I can't use every sword].

That was a rumor. The update said they were adding Nomad Moogles in NEW AREAS. As in, Promathia areas. Areas that did not previously exist. These are not accessible until you purchase Promathia.

(I think a lot of people incorrectly parsed that sentence as them adding new moogles to existing areas, when it clearly said they were adding nomad moogles to new areas).

Actually, I believe its a new TYPE of scythe for BLM.

It NEVER said selbina and mhaura. It said they would be adding them in new areas. Where they were added baffles me as well.

I have a simple solution to your gaming troubles:

Get a new game!

FFXI has its faults, sure. If you're that picky about the game, find one you like better. SE has been doing its best to keep the playing field level, but can't keep up with people finding exploits in the system. As for the moogle in in everyone's favorite port towns, it was only a RUMOR.

Oh, and BTW: calling a GM just to ***** about how SE isn't making the game easier for YOU just keeps them from having time to fix the problems you're ******** about.

I don't really mind down times. I mean they're fixing problems in the game and trying to make it better right? They're trying their best to give us a game that is as good as it possibly can be so cut them some slack.

Did it seem like they started the "daily" maintenance early? It was 10 minutes until the scheduled start time and the system message was telling everyone to logout immediately. Or maybe is was just my connection going down as I was logging. Anyway, PS2 players have got to love the new /shutdown command.

It's very unlikely they'll ever change the time frame for their updates. Heck, Square-Enix's technicians and servers are all located in Japan, so why would they force their whole team to work the night shift once a month or so, while they work regular hours the rest of the time?

If their technicians are located in Japan (which does seem at least relatively likely), then unless the world's been thrown on its head I believe 10:00PDT - 13:00PDT is 02:00JST - 05:00JST. They're working nights.

I actually agree with the rotation idea that someone mentioned here, but there are always issues at play that we don't know about so the feasibility of such things is always in question to those of us not in the know.
Downtimes too long
# Sep 14 2004 at 11:35 AM Rating: Default
Why are there 8 hour downtimes at all? Downtime should be about 15 minutes. You put a new image for the server in a new directory, and when it is time, just switch to the new directory. Down then up. It's pretty standard to do that.

looking at the complexity of Van'a'diel, I don't see how they could simply 'put it in another directory'. The world probably takes up most of the server space they have, along with all character data, etc. I bet it takes about half an hour just to reboot all the AI subroutines for the monsters.

Mmm it's really annoying that its prime time (Europe) but we have to cope. Changing it will be bad though since then when there's an update, you'll never know when it's going to be, which is bad. At least keeping 10-13PDT and times like that, you know that during this time, you MIGHT not be able to get on.

Well, I don't mind maintenance; I understand that's part of every Online game.

However, like previouslly stated; I would love to see this done on JP prime time for a change.

I'm tired of Server Maintenance, why can't Square-Enix rotate it between us and Japanese? It sure was an inconvience to some of us who stay up a couple extra hours to finish attaining Rank 5 last night.

Never worked with a server before, eh? Given the huge number of new areas, items, and NPCs that just appeared, I'd say they did a pretty good job for having only 3 things pop up errors. The Marin and map purchase issues look like a simple misplaced/missing period or semicolon error, quite a common coding bug that slips past a lot of code checkers. You complain about them not checking their work, yet you don't know the scope they're working on. Try running a /sea all and try estimating how many are really on, since a /sea does NOT find people zoning or invisible. (invisible! not /anon for lurking flamers) Given that they do actually try running their gms/playtesters through an update before putting it up, you gotta take into account that a few dozen playtesters won't be able to simulate a buffer overflow that 500+ people talking to a new NPC at once can cause, since the servers we play on have more buffer than we have drivespace.

Yeah, it's GMT: 18.00 - 21:00.

I doubt they'll change it when it's released in Europe.
