True Boxing is it For You?

Do you have what it takes to True Box?

(Or just play a single account)

Daybreak has announced a new ruleset progression server is being launched on Wednesday, December 9th 2015!

Quoted from Roshen at the Daybreak official forums:

What Is a True Box Progression Server?

This is a server where each player will only be able to play on one EverQuest account from their computer. We want to encourage players to play with their friends on this server, and not just form groups of only their alts.

If people are truly wanting to multi-box, they’ll have to do it the old fashioned way. Phinigel is a TRUE box server, which means in order to multi-box you’ll need a set-up that looks something like this: (on Daybreaks site it is a bunch of tables with multiple computer rigs set up in the photo... like the old Hackers movie)

Other Unique Features for Phinigel:

Raid Instancing

The big raid targets from each expansion will be instanced. While bosses like Lady Vox, Lord Nagafen, and (/cough) Phinigel Autropos (hey, THAT’S where we got the name!) will still spawn out in the world, groups of players will ALSO be able to have these targets available to them via Raid Instances.

The instanced raids’ targets have an account-wide 6.5 day lockout and will have the same difficulty as the non-instanced version of the raid target. Note that raid bosses on progression servers have had their difficulties increased since the launch of Ragefire.

Content Unlocks Every 90 Days

Players won’t vote to unlock content on Phinigel, and the server won’t wait until all of the raid content is defeated before the expansion unlock timers start. Instead, every 90 days, expansion content will unlock on this server.

That means 90 days of Classic EverQuest, 90 days of The Ruins of Kunark, 90 days of The Scars of Velious, etc. This is a server for players that want to move through the content faster than the previous progression servers have allowed.

Make Friends; You’ll Need Them

Make friends. Form groups. Join guilds. Kill dragons. Become a part of the server community!
The player community we have in EverQuest is something that makes us unique and special. While we each explore Norrath and defeat raid bosses, we’re all part of the same community that enjoys playing EverQuest together. As the community on Phinigel starts to develop, it’s important to work to get along with the other players on your server.
Phinigel players have expansions to unlock, continents to explore, and loot to be… looted. All of this will be a much better experience if players and guilds work to get along!

All Access Membership Required

Like other progression and special ruleset servers, you must have All Access Membership to access Phinigel. In addition to letting you play on this server, All Access includes additional great benefits, like 10% off most Marketplace purchases, and a claimable 500DBC grant each month! For more details and to sign up for membership, visit https://www.daybreakgames.com/allaccess.

Fixed (sort of).

Didn't want to steal their picture after all.

I've never boxed, but I like to play alone. Day Break seriously need to put in some solo/molo instances...

Trakanon and Vulak are pretty low population servers, in the meantime if you just want places to yourself.

How naiive some people can be? I give this server 1 yr before it closes due to low population. Good luck getting clarity, suckers.

DB should start this server in Kunark and allow 1 character transfer from either Lockjaw or Ragefire. In order to stop the Markets from being disrupted, then all gear/items are flagged No-Drop from the transferred character. and set a limit on amount of pp that can transfer as well. We can then pick up roughly where we left off and continue from there.

1 reason for my suggestion is that I spent the real cash to buy the TLP server only 40 slot bag on 2 separate accounts and feel kind of ripped off that they officially announce this new server about 2 weeks after the bags came out. Maybe they will reimburse, but I doubt it. They have their cash and won't want to compensate.

I do like the fixed no voting process, but I would prefer just a little bit more time between expansions... say 4 months instead of 3. I am not a grinder, but also don't like to feel rushed to keep up with current expansion/content.

I really hope they disable Krono on this server.

I think they're over-estimating how restrictive it will be for boxing by permitting only one account per computer. I've known a lot of players who use multiple computers to play EQ. And for this server, no doubt, serious boxers will just set up extra computers, which can be had very cheaply these days. "Legal" programs like ISBoxer can run multiple accounts on multiple computers just as easily as multiple accounts on one computer so those boxers will still have access to ISBoxer, etc., if they want it.

Personally I support the idea of a true no-boxer server. But enforcing this properly would require a true GM presence on the server, actively monitoring for boxing, as they do on P99. An "EQ Big Brother" presence, basically.

You can't see it here. but there is a photo in the original post which shows a multi-computer set up. So, Daybreak is aware that some people will use mulitple systems to get around the "one computer, one account" restriction. I assume that they are expecting the use of ISBoxer as well. As to how well they enforce it, that remains to be seen.

There's no question of "enforcement", unless they change the rules. They've already conceded boxers can play using multiple computers and ISBoxer has been confirmed as a legal program since it doesn't change the game code in any way. So no issue here unless they want to heighten the restrictions on boxing.

Ultimately, as P99 has demonstrated, the only really effective way to enforce a "one person one character" rule is to have live GM's monitoring the servers, as well as to encourage players to squeal on violators. That's how it works on P99. Basically "Big Brother Everquest" where the masters watch everything you do and your friends and acquaintances watch---and report.

I will say this, without mercs, it will be tougher for boxers to be able to operate entirely solo. So you may well see groups of 3 people playing 6 toons, which is somewhat of a good thing since it would encourage the social aspect of the game, which was formerly its core benefit and is now kind of an antiquated notion.

In the Broken Mirror announcement video(the hour-ish long one) they fielded some questions about this server.. They were talking about implementing a process monitoring sort of setup to enforce the 'one PC, one account' rule. I have no doubt people will be able to defeat it with some clever process renaming, or at worst virtual machines, but it should slow people down.. I think that's really all we can hope for.

The ruleset for this server and the boss instancing sound like what Ragefire should have been. A lot of people(myself included) already used up all their retro-EQ energy on Ragefire/Lockjaw, but I still hope they do well and are able to bring more people into/back to EQ.
