Restoration of Game Services

On March 13th, 2011, Square Enix announced they would temporarily be shutting down the servers for Final Fantasy XI to help with power conservation actions in the wake of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan a few days prior. Today, they've announced that through additional conservation actions at their Tokyo office building, they will be able to restore services for Final Fantasy XI and Playonline at approximately 4:00 (PDT) on March 25th, 2011.

Discuss this on the Zam Forums!

From Playonline.com:

As part of power conservation measures enacted following the Tohoku earthquake, our game servers were shut down on Mar. 13, 2011 3:00 (PDT) and services for FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline (hereafter referred to as "these services") were temporarily suspended. We have determined a date for the restoration of these services, and would like to share this information with you.

Operating the servers for these services makes up 11.6% of the total power consumed by our Tokyo office (based on February 2011 records). We have shut down our air conditioning system (8.8%) and enacted other power conservation measures, such as reducing lighting in our offices, to achieve over 10% in energy usage reductions. With these energy saving measures in place, we will be able to bring our servers back online and restore service to FINAL FANTASY XIV, FINAL FANTASY XI, and PlayOnline on Mar. 25, 2011 4:00 (PDT). All other services, such as those offered on the PlayOnline website, that were temporarily suspended will also be restored at the same time. Please be aware, however, that we may once again be required to suspend services in the event that the power situation worsens.

We offer our sincere apologies for the inconvenience caused by the temporary suspension of these services, and thank you for your understanding. As noted in our original notice regarding the suspension of these services, customers will not be charged any monthly fees for FINAL FANTASY XI throughout the April billing cycle.

We at the Square Enix group are trying to act in a proactive manner in order to provide support towards the relief and restoration efforts in the face of this unprecedented disaster while providing reliable service to our customers, and we thank you for your understanding and support.

Does anyone know if we have 'missed' a week of game time?

What I mean is, has the Vana'diel clock still been running and will all of my gardening plants be dead?! Or did the whole game get 'paused'?

My heart goes out to all the people affected by the terrible disaster in Japan.
Hopefully just a rumor

I heard that we "lost" a weeks worth of gameplay that we did online already.....is this true? Could we have lost data we already did???

PDT is -7 hours on GMT.... so if it will be restored at 04:00 PDT 25/03/2011 then my guess would be at about 11:00 25/3/2011.

Please correct me if I'm wrong!

I think its great of them to cut there own power consumption to bring the servers back up. but as they said,

" Please be aware, however, that we may once again be required to suspend services in the event that the power situation worsens"

Im wondering, when, not if, they need to shut the servers off again why wouldnt they move the servers to the united states / other country. im not shure, but i recall seeing/hearing of square enix based the california bay area.

My heart goes out to all the people in japan coaping with the tragity, and im currenty leading fund raiseing drives to help with red cross and other relief projects. Im vary pleased to say we have raised over 10,000 amd still growing.

That's awfully good of them, you have to admit though. They cut their air conditioning, lighting, and a lot of other things just so that they could let us play the game again.

I applaud their kindness and thank them for it. It makes me proud to be associated with them, if just as a customer.

It is very kind of them to do this. I personally don't think they need to go out of their way that much to satisfy some of the people ******** and complaining to them. I think they deserve a whole lot of thanks for donating so much to the relief effort while taking a hit and giving everyone a free month in April.

Just switch your clocks on your computers to Tokyo time they are 11 hours ahead of us so 4:00 PDT (assuming thats afternoon) would be 5am friday morning (for Eastern U.S. time zone) other states may vary.

FF11

Why don't Square Enix have FF11 server up and running first and FF14 at a later date, since FF14 is still a free game and a failed one. FF11 is still making money for Square Enix, but if they keep delaying the start up of FF11 server i bet they are going to loss some old and new subscribers. FF11 is consider an old game now. Every month newer game keep rolling out from different developer. Just standing in business point of view.

Maybe it was easier to do the restore of a game that has less people(data) than FFXI. That's my best guess.

Their notice says 4:00 pdt. I assume that they are continuing to use a 24 hour clock as they have done in the past, although in that case, they left off a zero. So this would be 4am on Friday the 25th to California, 7am in New York.
So....

This is 4pm Thursday the 24th (EST) in the US, right? I may be wrong.

No, you're mistaken on this. Square Enix's announcements are always based on a 24 hour cycle rather than broken down into AM or PM. 4:00 PDT Friday the 25th means 4:00 AM Friday morning in a location like California. In turn this means that it'll be 7:00 AM Friday morning for someone in New York.

has nothing to do with people being wrong regarding timezones.

has to do with no one reading the article as it clearly says PDT.
