GM Policies Made Public

From Sage Sundi, Global Online Producer:

New Policies

We are proud to announce that we are making our GM policies public and accessible to everyone. This decision was arrived at after much deliberation between our development team, global branches and other departments using input we received from players through Allakhazam.com and numerous GM calls. As a result, we decided to make the GM policies public, and in order to provide an even higher standard of GM service, to reassess what it is that GMs do.

Now that the GM Policies and Online Conduct are public, we’d like to point out major changes and clarify parts that may have caused confusion in the past.

What are Game Masters (GMs) for?

GMs are customer service professionals in FINAL FANTASY XI that possess a rich knowledge of our games. Their goal is to directly connect players within the game to our services, acting as the first line in our service front. They aim to help you achieve the best gaming environment possible and to help solve any problems that you may have. Only people with passion and an understanding of these goals can become GMs.

Lofty it may sound, but every GM in FINAL FANTASY XI shares these goals. And to foster better understanding, we have decided to release our Online Conduct and GM Policies to the public.

Restoring Items

We often receive calls about lost items. After investigating, sometimes we find user error was the cause of the loss. Regrettably, we could not return lost items to their owners.

While some lost items are of extremely high value, we realized that many players had a great sentimental attachment to items of relatively low worth. The value of those memories is unique to each player, and we cannot attach a price tag to make up for such a loss. Taking this into account, we sat down and thought about what our GMs could do to help in this situation.

We are happy to announce that we have decided to empower our GMs with the ability to restore items, regardless of reason, so long as we are able to confirm that they were indeed lost.

However, as written in our GM policies, players can only take advantage of this feature a limited number of times. This is necessary to prevent abuse of the system and to maintain fair game play. Currently there is a limit of one reimbursement ticket per account.

As outlined above, if you lose something important to you, you have the option of using this ticket to get your item back. However, we ask that you act immediately. If you delay for more than a week, we will become unable to confirm the item loss and restore your item.

Also, we intentionally left the number of tickets ambiguous ("limited number"), since we feel that in the months and years to follow, there may be a need to increase this number at some point in time. This decision was made to allow changes as needed in the future without having to announce them. If you ever lose an item that is important to you, please report the issue to a GM immediately.

Restoring Lost Experience Points Due to Technical Difficulties

Since we provide service throughout the year (24/7, 365 days a year), sometimes the servers for FINAL FANTASY XI encounter technical difficulties. This is our responsibility, and our number one concern has always been restoring service, as soon as possible. In addition, we have decided to start reimbursing players who have lost experience once an area is up and running again.

We’re sure that some of you have come back to the game after a server problem, and after logging in, find yourself in front of an “Incredibly Tough” enemy and then KO’d. A GM will broadcast an area-wide message asking for players who need their assistance. If you are one of these players, send the GM a tell and wait in your KO’d state. A GM should arrive shortly to move you to a safe place and revive your character. We will then restore your lost experience points.

Of course, you can always choose to forgo this option if you would rather quickly return to your home point, or have another player raise you instead. However, please be aware that we will be unable to compensate any lost experience once the above happens.

We plan to implement this policy in the next update because the GM functions have to be upgraded to accommodate this feature.

Will This Really Improve the GMs’ Standing?

"GMs don’t listen to what we have to say," "All they’re good for is getting us out of a stuck situation," and "It’s not worth it to call it in, you’ll just get punished instead" are just several examples of opinions we’ve heard voiced on the forums.

Our team’s primary goal is to change the perception of our GMs by helping our players understand what our GMs do. Some have said that making our policy public would cause great harm to our support staff. Even within our team, there was much opposition to allowing GMs to make themselves visible. However, we believe that unless this and other policy changes happen, we would be unable to demonstrate that we are here to support you, our players. Without these changes. our GMs' reputation would remain poor, and we could no longer take pride in our service.

We are aware that GMs are held in low regard because, their role in handing out punishment clashes with the image they project in other support tasks. Punishment is unfortunately necessary to protect our players in Vana`diel. Indeed, the image of meting out punishment for harassment and improper behavior contrasts sharply with the friendly, accessible GM that you normally encounter. Furthermore, GMs must keep confidential the results of our investigations in order to maintain the privacy of both parties involved. This adds to mistrust in GMs.

Since this is the perfect time for us to discuss this, I'd like to make the following clear. The support staff are here to support you in the role-playing game that you, the players, enjoy. They (the GM staff) will never mix support and role-playing. Part of the reason we decided that our GM staff should make themselves visible was to make this distinction clear.

Though it may seem to some of you that there is a misunderstanding within the Japanese MMO market as to what MMOs are about, special cases aside, GMs are never in a position to role-play. GMs who role-play during weddings only do so as a specific task. After their task at the event is complete, they still have other responsibilities which can include punishing players. Oftentimes this may come immediately after the event in which they were previously role-playing. One thing we would like to make clear is that we feel any role-playing that coincides with normal support tasks is inappropriate. Unfortunately, not everyone who provides service in this industry shares this view, and some services choose a different standard. These services unfortunately tarnish the professional image that GMs deserve.

In order to ensure a positive image within FINAL FANTASY XI, our valued players will always receive the following service from our GMs.

  • Our GMs will make themselves visible as much as possible
  • While we will not role-play, we will be as friendly as possible and never be rude
  • We will ALWAYS give you an answer in some form to your questions
  • We place the satisfaction of you, our players above everything else
  • We will take a much harsher stance against disruptive game play

In other words, you will never be punished when making a call, no matter how trivial it may be. But if a call is intended to obstruct our service, then our GMs will have no choice but to take action against the caller, because it prevents us from giving other players the support they need. As long as nothing inappropriate is done, our GMs will always be friendly and forthcoming when communicating with you.

Yeah I could care about items and exp really. I'd really like to see the the GM's have a ability called RMT bash, where they raise there sword and send RMT to the 7th of hell.

I would support this idea. I was thinking the same thing myself.

Unfortunately this is the ugly truth.

I am a little sick of all the griping and accusations about RMT's...Yes, there are some on every server but it is usually VERY obvious, yet I join a PT in CN and someone complains that "RMT's are in the Secret Room"...Umm, yeah, there was a PT in there killing flies, now why would RMT's be doing that? I guess they are trying to make a million gil off Insect Wings huh? ;>P This is just one example. Everywhere I go someone is accusing another PT of being RMT...well guess what?...I bet they are saying the same about your PT!

I play FFXI with my daughters on weekends and spend alot of time "Farming" during the week to make gil for us all. Well, I get accused all the time of being a RMT. It seems that many people just don't understand economics...you gather items from mobs and/or NM's , maybe take on a craft or fishing, then you sell those items for profit.
As for gilsellers ruining/hurting the econmy...no item will sell for more than a player is willing to pay. Stop paying 20mil for an item and the price WILL drop. It is actually the GilBUYERS who hurt the game because it is they who have no regard or respect for earning their money and pay they high prices with little care.

I have a solution tho, just make gil untradable. Every player is forced to EARN their gil by selling to NPC's or thru the AH ( and dump the tax which is pointless anyway) and dump the Bazaars which are just annoying ( to me) anyway.
And make ALL the NM's either rare/ex drops or Item spawned (rare/ex item of course) or a mix of both.

Anyway, just some of my thoughts, sorry for the long post. 4 years worth of venting pent up, but I'll stop ...for now. ;>P
RMT subject

Well, I'm not a fan of claiming that EVERYONE is RMT. However, I think that when people are saying this it's because RMT players have to level up also, usually on my server when there is a party that gets accused of being RMT; they (majority of the time) have 2-3 BLM each with the exact same gear which is usually 10-20 levels out of sync. The names are always difficult to pronounce, and the remaining party members all seem to have the same thing going with their gear. Needless to say, all are anon with no linkshell. *A typical sight when camping notorious monsters against higher level players who are also accused of being RMT*

I have to agree with you on changing NM drops to ra/ex, maybe not all but majority of the ones that obviously are overpriced.

I actually had an encounter recently with a GM where I got him/her to watch the LoO campsite as there were at least 20 different RMT people there competing against me. Whatever program they were using, it allowed them to ignore a timer in which there is a delay in how fast you can claim a mob. I say this because there were many times where i would cast first to claim a placeholder but my cast would just stop without stating anything or sometimes saying "Unable to cast at this time" halfway through my spell. But on countless 'pops' they would cast something such as flash or stun as the mob was just starting to show up. And with that many people there, you'd figure they would have to scroll past a few people....No! Instant targeting and claim.....forget it, I'm not gonna get all emo over this but you all catch my drift. Anyhow I was talking to the GM while he/she was watching the zone, unfortunately, there was no spawns for the GM to see what I was talking about.
But I did get a little frustrated after camping the NM for so long only to be outclaimed by RMT for days on end, I kind of took it out on the GM. It was obvious they were botting, but the GM insisted I take names and report it to the task force..........task force??? I'm sorry, that's just a joke to me.
yea yea 11,500 accounts sure....I want names of players from my server that got banned. And until I see RMT or botters get warped or disconnected with my own eyes, I'll never believe in that task force.

That's my rant that I've been keeping to myself now released, and I can get back to playing FFXI in a positive manner. Thanks for reading this long *** post.
Yeah, right.

I expect to see a lot more creative shoehorning of things into "disruptive play" by the GMs as a result of this.

They were nice and nebulous before, it can only get worse from here.

I'm sorry Theros but your argument is not fully accurate and is completely one sided. I know you play on the unicorn server and I know you are in Fortune linkshell even without playing on your server or knowing your name because I read about it.

Your linkshell leader or someone posted a rant on KI and the link is here

On page three of this thread a poster came forth with the real story

the quote is as follows
Quote:
GOD DAMN IT THIS FORUM DELETED MY TYPING SJGDJKSVFHFGSJBD.

Well, I'll try again.

Mind, I am in lolWabo, got a certain drop from this, and was there the entire time WATCHING the clock sitting above my T.V. I'll try my best not to sugarcoat things, but take my version as you will, for those of you that weren't there. If you were, you already know what happened, so I guess you had to get sympathy somewhere, from people not there, poor souls. Would should still be giggling today, in class.

Well, after I log in, I get told Tiafat is up and "OMG!" Pxt isnt going because they don't have enough. We head there, and decide to wait because we have more coming (at about 11 people, more otw), vs 2 PXT, non-existant Pain, and 3 Fortune (with 2 more in zone). Fotune decides to pull it with those numbers, no RDM/BRD there either. As I see the first BLM arrive with ES Sleep 2 I have the feeling I might be there awhile. A GM is called (by someone, not sure who), because we KNOW they are gonna hold it, with only 5 people there (it was a minute or two after noon at this point). And sure enough...

Well, Fortune does indeed show up, slowly, more trickling in over the next 30 minutes. When ES Sleep 2's were gone, they stalled with the at first one, then two-three tanks they had, until they could ES Sleep again. Still no damage, but a RDm popped about 15 min in. No word from a GM, not that I expected one...

Surprise! A GM came! Around 30 min into the fight (apparently someone's clock is off, because it definitely wasn't 5 , you KNOW GMs don't reply that fast), and with Tiamat still lingering at 100%, Fortune gets a "do significant damage in 5 min" tell. We are surprised, but how much is considered considerable? Would they do it?

Well, as you know, they didn't do it. As valiant an effort as it was, 99% did not make the cut, and just as we thought nothing was going to happen (it was more like 8 min than 5) they were told to leave the zone in 5 minutes. I hope the GM didn't expect them to zone it, but they could have tele'd themselves, lol. Enough /WHMs were there for it to be feasible. But, that didn't happen, and the tanks were warped, with the rest of the alliance quickly wiping afterwards. It was CFH'd, and a swore I saw someone shout "GM MPK!" which almost made for a Wabo alliance-wide mass joygasm, but as we had not done anything the whole time but watch, we just let it go un-CFH and start when Timmy walked back. (this was around 12:50). Not the prettiest fight by us (Deacon and his flame-breath MPKs didn't help either), but all of the new faces did very well for a first fight and followed directions well enough so that nothing too extreme occured. A few rather irritable bystanders gave us valuable information that "sucking was a bannable offense, so we should take care". I believed them, as I had just seen it with my own eyes (sorry, had to throw something in there, hehe ). An hour and 30-45 ish min later, we are rewared with a pretty full drop, including Hide, Kote, Horn, and.....Gaiters! I won them in a random deathmatch vs Tomiko (borrow them anytime Tomi <3), and decide to walk, rather than warp, home.

So, what are the morals of this story? I can name 3!

Sometimes, GMs do something! Something good! (or bad, depending on your point of view. We did go completely by the system though :P)

Don't claim something unless you are ready to fight!

And, adapted by Kishu:

"Keep fighting a monster even if you get crap usually, someday you are bound to get some FORTUNEate drops."

I hope you know that they are two sides to every story, and since most of you were not present, you'll never know what really went down, if someone didn't make a video (dear god, I wish I could have). Wabo isn't a sunshine and butterflies LS, but Fortune definitely isn't either, and this is just another chapter in the story. Seriously, FFXI will be around as long as you stay, you'll have plenty of good days and bad to come still, I'm sure. Just remember, GMs are not totally useless. They make for some seriously lolpwning, and a great drama thread!

Apparently you guys had Tiamat at 100 % hp for over 50 minutes while another linkshell who was capable of taking him out should have gotten the claim. You had 5 members in zone and 3 at camp when you ES sleep it for claim. That is why you got jailed.

See this is exactly why GM's get a bad reputation. People who have been punished post one sided rants even when the punishemnt was rightly so and just. I'm sorry but I had to post this. Took me a while to find the thread again but here ya go everybody. End game drama at its finest.

So all that crap about helping recover lost items is not going on in remora , well atleast not for this american player. So Enix GM's all go "F**k your selfs". OK i am going to put in my 2gil. I know a lot of the things people feel about GMs are true and justified, however I have only called a GM twice in 3 years, once because I was dumb and bought a single item which the seller said was a stack. The GM said it was my fault and refused to get my 100,00 gil back, and after I cooled off, I knew he was right. I learned a hard lesson and have always double checked my purchases ever since. The second time was a bit different. I went to Beaudeaux to get a fairy shield for my BLU. I tried for two weeks but there were always 3 players there or who showed up at 2 minutes to spawning time.
I couldn't get a claim they always seemed to know where it would pop, since then I have learned about bots and third party tools that allow them to do this.I finally lost my temper and told the player I was going to call a GM they laughed and said "So what they wont do anything" A lovely lady GM answered my emotional call and asked me to describe the nature of my complaint and did I have any evidence? I explained the situation and told her that 8 of the shields sold that month had been sold by the leader of the group. She took names and wished me a cheerful goodnight and good gaming. I felt better from at least being able to vent my frustration and figured that was probably the best I could hope for. Its been 3 months since that call and I have never seen any of the players again I got my shield fair and square. So I say lets wait and see it couldn't get any worse and at least SE is doing something positive now. Here's to good Gaming and as that GM said in farewell "Keep smiling"

The Bad news...

Square Enix is unable to stop RMT activities in the game. In fact they do not want to and will not make any serious effort unless we the players do something. It is to the point now that there are so many RMT that it is a profit center for SE. Planned account banning of moderate numbers of RMT accounts generates real cash revenues as the RMT's bring new replacement accounts online. Believe me this is a big money surge for SE and they like it.

Square Enix will do nothing but customer service minimums when dealing with RMT complaints. The solution is to stress the GM system by the constant and continuous reporting of RMT at the NM spawn camps. The complaint should be filed immediately when RMT show up at the site. Get all names and call GM immediately. Your complaint should be as follows.

RMT gil seller activities are blocking player acquisition of NM at location (specify).

You must only refer to RMT actions as RMT Gil Seller Activities because they are not playing the game, you are playing they are working. To block "Player" access in the game is a violation and it must be reported every time.

If you are at any camp in the game and the RMT show up, do not hesitate to call in GM call immediately. If they claim NM and they probably will cause let's face it, that is what they do. Then call GM again and demand they immediately jail the RMT and turn over any drops to your party. You must be firm and emphasis that they are responsible to stop violations of the user agreement. Don't let them be coy and give you crap like "how do you know they are gil sellers? Have they offered to sell you gil? Don't put up with any kind of crap response than that.

My normal reply to such coyness is to reply...

"GM Nimrod you are obviously unable to understand key game nuances please contact a Senior GM and have him respond to my call, I require someone more knowledgeable.

or I say...

"Ok let me put the puzzle together for you GM Nimrod , Chinese player, anonymous, no nation rank, no AF, can you say the word Profile...or perhaps there is someone more knowledgeable that can assist in this matter. Please call Senior GM immediately.

You must accuse the RMT by name at the site at the time, each and every time. When the GM's go home they should be wupped from the many calls and believe me something will happen.]

LOL i'm sorry but this brings back memories of an old thread, which I can't find anywhere... damn... that someone put up. It was a story about 2 GM's and what they did on thier spare time.. God please tell me some one else read that, it was hilarious.

Anyway on this subject. It sounds interesting, but it's all sugar coating till you test it out. Customer service has gone to **** everywhere, but luckily I've learned a hard lesson on this game, and that's this, Sometimes it comes down to how much of a fan you are of the game, and if it turns out you enjoy playing then sometimes u have to just suck it up and take the bad as well as the good. Thanx to SE for making the effort, but it'll be a perfect world the day we are ALL satisfied. Until they put a cap on how much to charge for items and make getting gil alot easier by selling to npc and such, then we'll always have those RMT just lying in wait to steal an NM a poor noob spent 17hours killing place holders for....

Damn if I can only find that damn story thread, such a great read!!

Sage you nubcopter, the policies we all requested be made public are the ones regarding RMT.

We wouldn't ***** about lost items if RMT hadn't made them impossible to replace.

"Oh I lost my Serket Ring that I got two years ago....I'd get another one but RMT is up Serket's *** 90 hours a day and they have infested every other source of income so buying one for 20 mil is completely out of the question. Yet I have reported the same RMT to GM's 100 times before and they still lick the inside of Serket's ****** on a 21-24 hour basis...I wish I knew why."

Time to get your *** in gear SE and fix the RMT problem, maybe then people will stop quiting to play better games.

It's gonna be kinda hard to make any head way on the RMT issue when IGE, one of the biggest RMT sites has bought Allakhazam, one of the biggest sources for information and guides for FFXI.

Maybe they should just make everything in the game Rare/Exclusive like they've done with all the over-camped drops... >.< that's probably about the closest thing they can really do, since reporting RMTs doesn't sdeem to do any good.
