Do you mean old because it starts getting mealworms or something in it? You can keep dry goods like this in the freezer to extend the lifespan. I used to keep pancake mix in the freezer because there was no way I could go through a box myself before stuff would start living in it.

It's actually easier to multiply to make a 4 person budget because cost effective portions tend to come in 4-5 serving sizes.

4-5 servings is my standard portion size. I can spend 70 cents on a box of rotini and $1 on a jar of pasta sauce, and that would be dinner for me and my boys.

Well, most people could photograph receipts and such, but you? With how you'll say anything just to get attention there probably really is nothing you could do to get anyone to believe anything you say. Of course you'll deny this, but that's more to do with this weird belief you seem to have that you're really clever and no one notices.

And just for the record, "excluding alcohol" was the point of your post where everyone started laughing at your claim.

If I don't eat out, yes I am. What part of this is confusing for you? We were talking about monthly grocery bills, not restaurant costs.

No, we were talking about the cost of eating for a month.

"Hey everyone! I can live on $3 worth of groceries a month! Just buy one small box of rice and one day just eat nothing but rice. The rest of the time I eat out but that doesn't count! Holy hell, aren't I clever with my food shopping? Why can't YOU live on $3/mth?"

I challenge you to live off of $100 of food for a month. All 3 meals, starting January 1st. I expect daily receipts/updates/tallies. All food consumed counts, including drinks - alcoholic & non (like coffee). I recommend getting 1 $100 gift card & using it exclusively for all food/drink related purchases.
I already do (ok. excepting alcohol, of course). Not sure what your point is. I can sit here and say "I spend about $100/month on food" and you can sit there and insist you don't believe me all day long.

"What?! No! Only groceries! No other food counts! Of course not! We only ever meant groceries!"

Look, stop embarrassing yourself. It's just not worth it over something so trivial. There's no real pride to be found in eating on $100/mth that you need to start scrambling now.

Um... Ok. Not remotely what I said. I've calculated the costs for a months worth of food based on my normal meal plans *if* I were eating nothing but home cooked meals for the entire month. So subtracting the cost of going out, but adding in the costs to eat those meals at home instead. And thus arriving at an accurate cost if someone were to do nothing but eat at home for a month.

Can we please remember that this whole thing started with a discussion about grocery bills? Or did you forget that?

A lot of people aren't pathological in their need to lie for attention so they get some benefit. It's been covered, shouldn't really pretend it's news to you.

Actually, posters have been factoring in all costs. The focus went to groceries, because that is the most cost efficient way to eat, which is relevant on a budget eating discussion.

I think you are overlooking the point. It is POSSIBLE to eat off of $100 a month, but it is impossible if you are eating daily "normal" meals.

One could always utilize local soup kitchens.

The amount of money one spends on food is pretty personal. Some people might spend a ton on groceries because they enjoy cooking gourmet meals, others might rather spend very little on food so they can go out to eat somewhere nice once a week.

Different strokes for different folks eh.

There were boxes of D.Donuts in our break room this morning. Despite my boycott of that particular establishment, I indulged in a boston creme donut containing the following:
Quote:
Enriched Unbleached Wheat Flour (Wheat Flour, Malted Barley Flour, Niacin, Iron as Ferrous Sulfate, Thiamin Mononitrate, Enzyme, Riboflavin, Folic Acid), Palm Oil, Water, Dextrose, Soybean Oil, Whey (a milk derivative), Skim Milk, Yeast, Contains less than 2% of the following: Salt, Leavening (Sodium Acid Pyrophosphate, Baking Soda), Defatted Soy Flour, Wheat Starch, Mono and Diglycerides, Sodium Stearoyl Lactylate, Cellulose Gum, Soy Lecithin, Guar Gum, Xanthan Gum, Artificial Flavor, Sodium Caseinate (a milk derivative), Enzyme, Colored with (Turmeric and Annatto Extracts, Beta Carotene), Eggs; Bavarian Kreme Filling: Water, Sugar Syrup, Modified Food Starch, Corn Syrup, Palm Oil, Contains 2% or less of the following: Natural and Artificial Flavors, Glucono Delta Lactone, Salt, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Benzoate (Preservatives), Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Titanium Dioxide (Color), Agar; Chocolate Icing: Sugar, Water, Cocoa, High Fructose Corn Syrup, Soybean Oil, Corn Syrup, Contains 2% or less of: Maltodextrin, Dextrose, Corn Starch, Partially Hydrogenated Soybean and/or Cottonseed Oil, Salt, Potassium Sorbate and Sodium Propionate (Preservatives), Soy Lecithin (Emulsifier), Artificial Flavor, Agar.
