My ex was very jealous of the fact that I was female and they weren't, so verbally abused me. I was lucky to leave before the violence got physical, as she had started to break things regularly that were mine. The last fight he broke his thumb hitting the wall instead of me.
Notice the change in pronouns I use to speak of them. They had just enough sense to stay out of jail, but then we both were involve in Transgender Right movement and knew the conditions trans people face in jail.
As to the op, I'm against the state paying for cosmetic treatment for TG's. Make them work for it, My ex can't get surgery because the refuse to work as long as they owe me back child support, so their five o'clock shadow is rather noticeable.

I wish I could get someone to pay for my more and more noticeable mustache to get removed. Anyway, if we recognize gender identity disorder as a thing (and I do) - It makes sense to support the treatments that are needed to help someone realign...
