If you are a smoker, stopFollow

#1 Aug 27 2013 at 1:34 PM Rating: Excellent
Today, my mother died.

Not from cancer, or other direct smoking related death. No, she had a car accident. One she would have survived... If not for having heavily damaged arteries and veins caused from decades of smoking. So she survived the accident, her injuries were healing, but because of her damaged heart, we lost her shortly after one today.

So, if you love anyone in this life, stop. Today.

I'm sorry for you.

The more my Mother goes to the Doc's with her Grandmother, the sooner I hope she sees what she will be going through. However, some how, her mind is twisted enough to keep on smoking. It is sad, but I'm sure I'll lose her to a smoke related death.

I quit smoking two years ago, when I finally met my daughter. I am sorry for your loss, and wish that I could do something to make it less palpable.

Thank you all so very much. It has been a trying time, and with the exception of one brother, we have all dealt with it well enough. Many tears have been shed, and lots of great memories shared. My mother was always a sarcastic, hilarious person to be around, so there has been some laughter through the tears as well. It is the harshest pain I have ever had emotionally, that is for certain, even more because I had not been in as regular contact as I really should have been. It just shows that you need to take and enjoy the precious, short time that you are given on this earth, and not put off for tomorrow what can be done today.

And I do hope people listen. My mother was no where near young, and the accident she had, per the doctors, regularly kill drivers a third her age. And she survived, and was actually mending far better than they ever hoped. But her heart was the problem. She had been having some issues and warning signs, so let it be a lesson to also listen to your body, and follow what it says. Had she gone to a doctor sooner, they would have discovered her heart issues, and she'd have not been on the road that night, and likely still with us today.

I am still in the final stages of dealing with it all. Her body has been cared for per her wishes, her financial issues are on the way to being resolved, but there will now be a gigantic hole in my life. No one will ever fill that void. My mother was one of a kind, and the stories of her larger than life personality will live on. So will a part of her in every life she touched.

Thank you Sora. You always know that someday your parents will die, it's just a shock even still...

And Vataro, that is a really interesting video. I will have to keep it and try to convince my sister to stop. I don't know if she will, she is as stubborn as our mom, but I can hope.

I am so sorry for your loss, and as an ex-smoker I agree. I've been spending the last few year trying to regain the health I lost from 16 years of a disgusting habit.

Vaping has become such a hobby for me, I feel like it's quickly become an addiction all its own, but at least not for the nicotine. I'm a gadget *****, and this is a whole new family of gadgets for me to collect, tinker with, and subsequently break.

Still, it's been ~3 solid months since I quit the cancer sticks. Go ME.

Go you indeed. And you can e-cig indoors for all I care because it doesn't bother me at all. Hooray!

The first time I saw someone using an e-cig indoors I freaked out a little, until someone pointed out that all it really discharged was water vapor. No smoke, no stink.

I'm torn on vaping. I really like that I can get my nicotine without having to chew gum or spray peppermint pain in my mouth, and being able to "smoke" without worrying about throat, lung, mouth cancer is great.

Unfortunately, I've not been able to find a liquid that mimics the "scratchy" feel I get from a real cigarette, and it doesn't work as well with coffee as real tobacco does. Still, I've cut down significantly on my tobacco consumption (er, I guess you don't really consume it, but you know what I mean) since I started vaping. I'm down to one with my morning coffee and one before bedtime. My nicotine consumption (again with the consumption) has gone up, though, because I now puff while I'm at the computer whereas before I had to get up and walk to the window to get my nicotine.

Win some, lose some, I guess.

Thank you all once again. I do miss her, and hate knowing that I will never speak to her again. It's easier the longer it's a fact, but I still miss her so much.

I am glad to see so many either quitting or moving to less destructive means of getting their fix. I just know that I fought for a long time to try to get her to stop, but failed. If her death has some way to stop others, then at least I can feel good in that part of it. I hate that she is gone, but if others don't have to lose a loved one because of that, then I am helping to keep her memory alive. She always watched over us, and worried for us.
