Crafting Synths
There are three types of synths: Standard Synthesis, Rapid Synthesis and Bold Synthesis.

Standard Synthesis: The synthesis that has the highest chance of success. Results for a success are as follows:
Progress: (1dx) - Durability Lost + (Control/Required Control Stat * unknown modifier) (Cap at 20%)
Quality gain: Unknown, but independent of non-failed durability loss. Influenced by Craftsmanship/Magical Craftsmanship stat requirements and how far above them you are.

Rapid Synthesis: Sacrifices some Durability and Quality gained for a higher progress rate. (Do not use synth enough to get enough information). Results for a success are as follows:
Progress: (1dx) + y (Cap at 30%)
Quality gain: Unknown, but appears to be no more than half of Standard.

Bold Synthesis: Sacrifices half the progress rate and increases Durability lost by ~10%-15% for an increased Quality gain. Results for a success are as follows:
Progress: 1/2 (1dx) - Durability Lost + (Stats/Required Stats * unknown modifier) (Cap at 10%)
Quality gain: Unknown, but appears to be at least double Standard.

Crafting Success Rate:
There is no solid evidence on what the actual success rate formula is yet. There are several factors that have been explicitly stated to affect the success rate however.

Crafting Success results:
The amount of durability lost before any adjustments from other effects is the sole measurement in determining if the result is a success or a failure. The results are as follows:

Success Results
Success/Fail Standard Training Rapid Bold
Critical Success 0 0 0 0
(Loud 'twang' sound and flash)
Success 4 4
(Strong flash and sound) 5 5
6 6
7
No Result 7 8
(Weak flash and sound) 8 9
9 10
11
Fail 10 12
(Gunshot) 11 13
12 14
15
Critical Failure 13 16
(Explosion) 14 17
15 18
19
20
21

Both positive and negative effects that do not affect success rate are applied AFTER this determination, so using an effect like Tender Touch won't reduce failure rates, but using an effect that reduces failure rate will indirectly lower durability loss as a side effect.

Training

Not having the appropriate training key item for a recipe hinders progress by expanding the success range results--making it easier to lose more durability in each range--and applying an unknown penalty on the durability lost. It is still possible to lose only 4 durability on a synth without meeting a training requirement, but it far more likely to lose more.

Support:
Not having the appropriate Support (Common, Guild) when starting a synth inflicts a higher failure rate on the synth. The higher level of Support required, the more severe the failure rate if you don't have it. A higher level of Support counts as a lower level of support, so a Guild Support also counts as a Common Support buff, and a Master Support also counts as both a Guild Support buff and a Common Support buff.
