After collecting a number of Mysterious Remnants (Sacred Recollection) you are sent to deliver them to Marshal Kain (No New Tale to Tell) where you learn of his mission, his vision, from the Vigil, that he must collect all the Remnants of Aedraxis.

Kain sends you to recover a Remnant of Aedraxis from the Redsnow bandits, but the evil in it is so poisonous you had no choice but to destroy it. When you inform Kain of this, after the fact, he flies into a rage and drives you from his presence (An Unbearable Burden).
His officers seem concerned about him but are fiercely loyal. One even tells you "I would follow him to Hell, and I am afraid that is exactly where we are going (Speak to the Fist and One Soldier to Another)."

In Stillmoor we learn that Marshal Kain, now Kain the Fallen, has finally succumbed to his inner demons, slaughtered an entire village and has become a commander of Regulus' armies (Ascension of Darkness through Rise and Fall and the Stillmoor Zone Invasion event Raising Kain).
