Blizzard Embraces F2P For An Upcoming Title

Develop is reporting that Blizzard might be looking into an interesting approach for one of it's upcoming games, saying the company "will embrace free-to-play and will apply the model in an upcoming, as yet unannounced game."

The website couldn't provide further details on the specific project this would apply to, but the studio is widely known for working on a next-gen MMO named "Project Titan". While the move would be a major change from the model we have become accustomed to in World of Warcraft, Blizzard may need to follow suit to keep up with many other MMO titles going free-to-play in the past few years.

It is also possible that this game in question applies to an entirely different "unannounced game" as the California studio has said it will expand business opportunities to create both subscription and freemium titles.

This feels like it's their Warcraft DOTA that will be F2P, but I think that was a given form the get go.
I call BS on that

reason for that is why would blizzard go jumping on the bandwagon considering already have a good working model that crushes competition out every time? It makes no sense from any angle.

I think that's kind of a stretch to say they crush out the competition "every time". Yes, WoW is a behemoth that dominates the MMO market, but that's primarily because, for the longest time, it was the only great MMO. It's because of how well WoW has done that other companies have been forced into a F2P model because it's the only way to snag hardcore WoW fans who aren't willing to pay for a second subscription.

Although WoW Blizzard does well with its other games, I wouldn't say it has crushed the competition. Starcraft II was a great success but it hasn't destroyed other RTS' nor has Diablo killed other RPGs.

If it plans to have yet another subscription-based game then I think it'd be in trouble if they want to snag WoW players without losing them.
