WoW Surpasses 12 Million Players Worldwide

Blizzard attributes this milestone to the launch of Wrath of the Lich King in mainland China.

Blizzard just announced that the subscriber base for World of Warcraft now exceeds 12 million players worldwide. The company attributes this milestone to the recent launch of the Wrath of the Lich King expansion in mainland China and the excitement surrounding the release of Cataclysm on December 7.

So let's look at the list of noteworthy World of Warcraft news: the game just surpassed 12 million players; BlizzCon will be held later this month; WoW will celebrate its sixth anniversary on November 23; and Cataclysm comes out on December 7. It seems to be a good time to be a WoW fan. What do you think? Will the subscription base get another boost following the launch of Cataclysm?

Im sorry for all you whiners and people who think content is too easy now compared to vanilla and TBC, but for the casual player and not so hardcore raiders its nice to be seeing end game content unlike TBC where if you were only in a hardcore guild did most even see the inside id Tempest Keep or Black temple let alone sunwell.

Blizz has done the smart thing in giving the casual player a chance to get the good equipment and at least see some of ICC if not all. they have to bring out a product that will be at least a middle ground from casual to hardcore.

Now from what i have read/seen the dungeons are getting a push back into where you actually have to work for your equipment. and im sure raids will be back to being more difficult for those of you who like wiping endlessly before even downing your first boss will make you all happy to be spending your hard earned gold on those even bigger repair bills.

Now granted i dont like things too easy but im not a hardcore raider. I like to get better equipment like everyone else but i dont want to have to work months just to down the first few bosses. a learning experience is great but anything too difficult and youll see the casual player leaving the game since they will never be able to to the end game content.

and once again for all you QQers about leaving the game cause its the same old same old ether suck it up and play on or at lease make constructive criticism that may help the developers make a game that will make both the casual and hardcore player want to play the game. (and again thats what heroic modes are for)
Congrats Blizz!!

So instead of making $161,000,000 per month ($1,932,000,000 per year), not including the up front cash they made selling the expansion for WOLK ($563,500,000), a bit over $2 Billion the first year....

Now Blizzard will make a bit over $2,604,000,000 for the year of Cat.

It really kills me when a company this successful whines about low membership when they are still reaping in that kind of monthly revenue.

The new Guild system they created without any real input from the MAJORITY of the Guilds, may indeed cause many to retire from the game after leveling a new toon... which Blizz has now made it so damn easy that will be in the first week.

Adding a half a million users is not news. If anything the lack of additional numbers only reflects the amount of people leaving the game vs the influx of new people and gold farmers. Cataclysm will show a boost in population but what they won't tell you is how many people buy Cata, subscribe for two or three months, then leave after realizing it's the same old content with a few new bells and whistles and a new buggy system for raiding and a guild function that slaves you to a specific guild instead of finding new friends to play with when the eventual drama forces decent people to leave the guild or game. Oh and I forgot the all new zones with the all new player characters that will play no differently than the ones you already have. The only thing the new zones will bring is the ability to have new people advance faster and faster to end game. Dedicated people who have played for years will have to endure badly equipped (gear and experience) players. And for the casual decent player, pickup groups will be crappy. They are with WotLK because after the dedicated players pass through the content all that are left are the unskilled, unprepared, unexperienced new people. Because there are so many, blizzard gave a huge buff to end game in Wrath that enabled at least one hardcore guild to come back in BLUES to take down at least 7/10 normal mode ICC 10 bosses... Sorry for the long rant. As a person who played since vanilla, I am truly unhappy and scared to see the eventual regression from old school Wow to it's current and future Farmville end

I'm kind of with you there... I'm hoping Cata will offer more than a fancy reskin. I left WoW for a few months this past summer because of many of your sentiments and there were a lot of ill will feelings towards Blizzard and their business model.

I'm looking forward to Cataclysm and hoping that they won't ***** up any of my favorite characters too badly. If it turns out to be same old same old, however, I'll be leaving WoW for good. I tried Warhammer, but it just stalled out after you left Tier 1... and none of the other games seem to have anything more than hype behind them.

But I guess I'll just have to wait and see... if Cataclysm doesn't offer anymore challenges and more of the free candy style gaming model I think that more and more people will leave.
oh please.

I could have sworn that this number was hit previously in TBC... probably after the china release of that.

World of Warcraft has been stuck at 11.5 million players since the launch of Wrath of the Lich King. This is the first time since December 2008 that Blizzard has announced a new number.
