Patch 3.0.2 Released

If you login right now you'll be able to download the whopping 1.3gb patch, thankfully if you've been running the background downloader the last few months you only should have to download a few hundred megabytes.

The most recent patch notes are located here.

Keep reading for a run down on what's to come in this patch...

New things:

  • Barber Shops! You can find them located in Ironforge, Stormwind, Undercity, and Orgrimmar. More info on them can be found here.
  • Achievements have been added! Have fun earning them and maybe some of them will give you cool mounts, tabards, pets and even titles!
  • Stormwind now has a harbor! Enjoy taking a leisurely boat ride from Auberdine to Stormwind! And in the future to Borean Tundra!
  • Vanity pets and mounts have been moved out of your bags and have entered the all new pet interface on your character screen. This frees up mucho bag space!
  • A new in-game calendar has been added, you can use this to track holidays and raids or whatever you want!
  • The amount of experience between 60 and 70 has been adjusted, enjoy faster leveling!
  • Badges and pvp tokens have moved to the new token interface in the character window, even more bag space is freed up!
  • The Caverns of Time has opened up a new portal, but you won't be able to enter it until you reach a higher level. Here you will go back in time and help Arthas in the Culling of Stratholme.
  • Spell damage and healing have been merged into one stat called spell power, all healing gear has been lowered but now gives equal spell damage and the coefficients on heals have been raised to allow the same amount of healing.
  • All items that gave one school of spell damage have been converted to normal spell power, such sets as Frozen Shadow Weave and Spellfire.
  • All TBC raid mobs have had their health reduced approximately 30%.
  • Illidan no longer shears!
  • Tons of class changes and new talents! We get a free respec!
  • Two new arenas have been added and we can play in! Queue up today to visit Dalaran Sewers and the Orgrimmar Arena!
  • New honor rewards have been added at level 70!
  • Macros and keybindings are now stored server side! We can now switch computers without rewriting every single macro in existance!

That's about everything new, more will be added as it is discovered but this should be about everything new!

Silly question
# Oct 16 2008 at 4:36 PM Rating: Decent
Ok, I know next to nothing about computers, except for playing WoW and messing around with things. So, my question is, if the patch is 1.3 GB, why on earth do I keep getting an error message upon downloading that says it requires 6.5 GB of disk space and therefore cannot complete the download?! (My computer is crap, by the way, and I only have 3.5 GB of space left...) Any insight would be much appreciated, as I am clueless and just want to play! o.O

It's for the same reason you need free disk space on your PC for virtual memory and defragging your HDD.

It needs somewhere to put the files to move them around and patch them etc. See Blizzard's technical support forum and then the thread at the top about the background downloader.

http://forums.wow-europe.com/thread.html?topicId=6293499602&sid=1

About the first sentence or so in the first post.

I have characters on the Dunemaul and Hyjal shards. Dunemaul works OK, except a few spells are erratic. Hyjal is a disaster - I have no pet bar, so mounts aren't available and many spells don't work at all. I guess it takes a while to work out the bugs.
Happy ish

Can i just say, Feral Spirit is bloody brilliant!!! Can't wait to try it out on some alliance noobs lol. I managed to download while at work so it was all ready for me when i got home, logged on for a few ours but seems to be really busy now so got loads of problems, for instance.....tried to get into WSG, materialised randomly in Terokar forest.

Looks really good though, loads of new content......bring on 13.11 :}

Free content?!? No. This is not in any way, shape or form free. The devs did not do it for free. They were paid for every hour they worked. That said...

Things do not always go as planned. The best laid plans of mice and men and all that ya know. Bringing as large a project as I KNOW this was to live servers is an order of magnitude more complex than just running it on a test server. There are all sorts of other things to get hooked up and working. Login server cluster that shuttles everybody to the right realm, battlegroups that interact with all the different servers, etc.. etc. Realize that it's nowhere near as simple as just putting the software for a realm on a server and booting it up. Each realm runs on multiple servers (I don't know how many, but each continent and the Isle are all separate servers.. likely split much more than that even.. each continent its own mini-cluster), and interacts with several others at the same time (for battlegroups, instances, logins, loot databases, etc..). Not an easy task, and I can't think of any other software project that could compare in complexity save for maybe the whole xbox live system or Second Life.

All those who are talking about having to wait while downloading the patch.. um... what happened to your background patch downloader? Did you turn it off or something? I mean it's purpose is to keep traffic jams like that from happening, and it sounds like some of the problems with the servers might possibly have been from too much download traffic (no, I don't know, but it did come to mind and seems plausible). I know in my case I was pretty much done downloading days ago (other than some small additions that happened right at the end). I fired it up and let it install and get all updated and ready to go before the servers were even due to be back up. Foresight. It's a good thing. Patience is as well. I advise exercising it whenever possible. Just remember that those devs that are working to bring you your entertainment are human as well.

Any help appreciated on this. My downloader stopped at 97% on 3 different computers. Firewalls not enabled, defender disabled as well as ports checked out ok. It is still saying appears to be behind firewall and tracker not responding. MY computer is vista, my laptop is windows xp as well as my husbands. Very frustrating for a wireless internet connection, as well as myself. Please be specific with any ideas, I'm not the smartest computer operator out there.
Thanks all
Download of Patch

This patch download took 3 hours to download because of its size (1.2GB). This is one of the biggest patches I've encountered with WOW.

As everyone else was downloading it took 3 hours to download.

I think WOW should have warned you that the download that it would take a while.

After the download, it also took 30 to 45 min to install because of its size.

When you start WoW tick the checkbox for show launcher.

Close WoW and then start it up, should start with a luancher window on the desktop.

Go to options then tick download patch after WoW exits.

Play WoW. Close WoW. Let downloader pre-download the next patch for you if it's available.

I did this and only had to download 0.12GB last night, done in 10 mins.

Multi managing 10 million people and activating all the achievements for those people takes time. They should have been honest and put up all the servers once the Achievements were applied, rather than making us wait, especially on all these high-pop servers like Kel'thuzad. :(

Begging for 1 day credit
# Oct 14 2008 at 7:32 PM Rating: Decent
I don't usually post anything because I'm a sorry solo player but I managed to get to the Blizz boards a bit ago and see some guy begging for a day credit for the lost time due to the patch.

It's 50 cents... OK, so the guy makes the case its that times the number of people playing.

It's free content that Blizz paid the Dev's to develop over the last year. There has to be a pretty good cost there. Yeah, they'll get it back with revenue from the expansion but they're giving the guts out for free.

Its gonna take me a few hours to download even with a 1.5 meg cable connection. What about the people using 128, 256, or 512 connections?? What about the ones still on dial up??

I could use my emergency dial up connection and take a few days to download the patch. Does that mean I can send Blizz a bill for 4 days of playing, 8 packs of smokes and two cases of beer??

"It's free content that Blizz paid the Dev's to develop over the last year. There has to be a pretty good cost there. Yeah, they'll get it back with revenue from the expansion but they're giving the guts out for free."

While I agree 50 cents is not worth it, this content is not free,we pay every month for it.

So far, this is the worst job I have seen on a patch as far as being ready and having the servers working properly.

I agree to a point that we pay each month.... that keeps the world rolling.. I put gas im my truck everyday but that doesnt mean my truck gets updated for free every year...

The downtime for this "patch" sucks but we're getting alot for free. I was playing Star Wars Galaxies a few years ago when they destroyed the game for "FREE". Yes this sucks but trust me when I say it could be much worse.

But..BUT .. ask me again tomorrow when I can't login (hopefully this is resolved) and I may change my mind about whether "free content" is worth it or not

It would be complete non-sense to think we don't pay for updates.
If you compare it to a vechicle, it would be more like your computer is the vehicle, the game is a highway, and your monthly fee is taxes. When I pay taxes, I expect the highways to be of a certain quality, because I pay for it.
That being said... if highways need to be upgraded, I would expect construction, road closures, and delays... and I certainly wouldn't expect a tax rebate because of it.
No sense in complaining when they are attempting to make things better.

Ignoring content additions and bug fixes etc. I would of thought Blizzard's bandwidth costs would be HUGE.
Not to mention the amount of hardware they have to use, and it certainly isn't gonna be cheap stuff now is it?

So our money is paying for new content AND to keep the servers online so we can actually play.
If you look it that way your paying a lot less for content and more for being able to play the game.

Anyway, we have normal maintenance on Wednesdays and noone complains about missed gaming time and wants an extra day. Would you like an extra day for the time you spend at work/school and are unable to play?

I was initially dubious but I've certainly enjoyed the make-over for paladin spells, with what seems like a fair bit of instant-cast firepower added - it's certainly seemed to speed up combat. I'll have to watch the mana a lot more now though, heh.

I got in , finally , and managed to reset my talents , when to undercity , there wasn't a single NPC in sight , when I exited undercity I got kicked back to char selection rofl. And yeah , looks 100% better. Think they nipped the graphics. Nice , makes it much more immersive. Nipped up spell stats and stuff too , nice. Feels like a huge beta at this point though hehe.
Microsoft rumor musta been true ...
# Oct 14 2008 at 6:28 PM Rating: Decent
Based on the quality if this patch it seems that the rumor that this new add on is being contracted out in part to Microsoft must be true. I mean look at the quality of the first release. Well if it holds to their typical failure rates then everything "should" be OK by the third patch to fix the patch. I think we are on patch fix one so far...

Wherez my 3D Glasses this seems too real?
