I Love You Phillip MorrisFollow

I Love You Phillip Morris is a movie most of you have probably never heard of, as it hasn't been released yet in the US. The reason it hasn't been released in the US, despite starring Jim Carrey & Ewan McGregor and mostly being a comedy, is because it deals with very gay subject matter.

Well, the movie was released in other parts of the world so of course, it has made it's way to the internet (Moviefather has it up if you're interested). I watched it last night & honestly, it was pretty good.

Jim Carrey plays Steven Jay Russell, a pretty (in)famous gay con man. He eventually gets sent to prison, meets Phillip Morris (McGregor) & falls in love. Most of the rest of the movie revolves around Russell breaking out of prison multiple times to be with the love of his life. Some of his escapes are pretty ingenious.

This is all based on a true story, contains no nudity (although there are some love scenes & various references to gay sex), yet the move has been delayed multiple times & had a hard time finding a distributer. Honestly, Brokeback Mountain was more "hardcore".

I find it sad that for whatever reason, America doesn't seem ready for it.

I'd say it has much more to do with name "Phillip Morris" than the fact that it involves gay love.

I will probably watch this because I enjoy Carrey in his roles that aren't one-dimensional facets of his comedic style. I kind of wish that at the very least, any future comedy he does is of the black variety. As for the quoted text: lolwiki says that Brokeback is the eighth highest grossing romantic drama of all time (which I'm sure is due in no small part to sales in the US). Not having a distributor =/= America not being ready for movies that revolve around gay relationships. It's a niche independent film which practically consigns it to less-than-stellar sales. However, if a studio were to take a chance and exploit the 'controversial' subject matter, it very well could do as well as Brokeback.

Yeah, I saw the thread title and thought they made a sequel to "Thank You For Smoking."

For some reason the name "Phillip Morris" makes me think of the cop Cosgrove from Freakzoid.

They have a distributor. Granted, they had to re-edit the movie (took out some of the really gay stuff) in order to get even a small, indy, US one as the initial cut of the movie couldn't find a buyer despite the two A list actors in the lead. Currently, the release date has been pushed back again due to legal issues between the US & European distributors.

It did well at festivals & currently enjoys an 84% on rotten tomatoes.

See, I think that is pretty dumb. Whatever you can do to pull in the widest possible audience I suppose.

The majority of Americans aren't ready for gay romance. They'll accept in a exploitative, exotic way as Brokeback Mountain was (inadvertently) marketed, but they aren't ready for it as mundane story element. That's not to say the majority of Americans are raging homophobes, but that they currently find it difficult to identify with gay relationships they way they do with straight romances in movies. A movie where key characters are gay and it isn't the selling point of the movie can't work yet on a wide scale.

Not as most people would interpret the term, no. The number of peopel who actively and openly hate gays is few an inconsequential. Most people fall into one of two categories. The first is apathy. Whether it is because they don't feel the issue is important enough or they fear change, they don't actively push for equality. During the Civil Rights Movement the fight was never against those who were opaquely intolerant who outright said "no," but it was a battle over the massive middle ground which was "yes you should have rights, but wait." Not surprisingly, that's pretty much the same situation now. The second group is an outgrowth of our society's currently strong valuing of tolerance. To be openly and actively intolerant is to become a social outcast, and so many that fear or are made uncomfortable by homosexuals hide those negative feelings or attempt to cover them up with other other contrived reasons.

But the gay couple don't kiss. Jim Carrey & Ewan McGregor do much more than that, even if there is no nudity. Heck, you find out Carrey's character is gay when, having sex with whom you assume is his wife, Carrey shouts "I'm gonna come!" & a bearded man's head pops into view & shouts, "Ya, come in my ***!" Then, as narrator, Carrey's character says, "Did I mention I was gay?"

Hell, if you want further proof America isn't ready for this, look at the Karma bombing in this thread.
