So, my doctor cut a couple skin lesions of for biopsy on Thursday. One from behind the left knee and one from my back (roughly right above the kidney). The results should be in by Friday the 18th.

So, yeah; I'm totally sore three days later.

I'll have a comprehensive meet with a rheumatologist on the 21st. The goal there is to figure out the auto-immune thing.

How you doin'?

It's suddenly gotten chilly, so not particularly fond of that.

I seem to remember seeing something recently about a study reporting on an advance in auto-immune suppression. I can't find it now.

Is this why you are getting tested? To receive new treatment?

More like: to get any treatment. Well, treatment other than the Prednisone I've been on for the last seven gorram years.

ALSO: Find the study, already!Smiley: motz

I've had three friends go under the knife in just the last couple weeks. One had a section of his small intestine removed (found a lump or something). Another had a toe removed as a result of diabetes. And a third had a plate put in her arm due to a bad break (problem with her foot that caused the random fall is still to be dealt with).

I, on the other hand, am doing pretty well health wise (knock on wood). Been working out regularly, eating well, sleeping well. I'm in better shape (and feel better) than I have in like 15 years. Only issue I have is that my contact lens prescription must be wrong. That, or my eyes are reaching that "not so elastic" point, making it harder for me to focus short vs long distance. I'm sure it's not that second thing though, cause that usually only starts happening when people get into their... OMG! I'm old!!! Smiley: frown

Seriously though, the eye thing is a pain. It's like randomly, one day my right eye can't focus on distant objects. Then the next day it's my left. When using both, I can focus, but I'm sure it's creating some eye strain as a result. Nothing compared to your eye issues Bijou, but still. Strangest thing is that the last time I went to the eye doctor (January), I mentioned this (and they changed my contact type to dailies to reduce eye strain and some other thing I've forgotten about), and they also changed the prescription on my left eye (but for better eyesight, not worse). I'm thinking that change was a mistake though. That eye is almost never able to focus well at distance now. It's not so bad that I'm blind or anything, but just enough to be an annoyance. Oh. And up to about a year ago, I was able to focus on close things well even with contacts in. Now? Not really at all.

How's your blood sugar? If I'm remembering your age right you're right in the target zone for onset for diabetic retinopathy; a thing you don't want to fart around with.

Hmmm... They do that eye picture thingie every year and compare it to previous years, and the doctor said nothing had changed last time (which was a good 6 months after I first started having issues), so that's probably not it. I'm assuming if it was bad enough for me to notice the effect, they should be able to see the blood clots in there somewhere. But who knows? Diabetes doesn't run in my family, and I've never had symptoms (the usual ones anyway). But I also don't think I've ever had my blood sugar checked. Suppose it wouldn't hurt to buy a cheapo meter at the drug store. Better safe than sorry!

I'm reasonably certain it's age affecting the elasticity in my eyes. Two years ago, the doctor made a point of being surprised at how well my eyes were maintaining their elasticity, but warned me that I should expect that to change. Last year, the doctor did say that my elasticity was down. Also, I just rummaged around in my bathroom cabinet and for some unknown reason still have packaging for my contacts going back a few years and it wasn't just last year that the prescription changed. 4 years ago, I had -6.0 in the left eye, and -5.75 in the right. 3 years ago, they switched to both eyes with -5.5, which remained unchanged for two years (which I remember being nice because I didn't have to remember which box was which). This last visit, they changed to -5.5 in the left, and -5.25 in the right.

So yeah. Just strange stuff happening. It's not a huge huge deal, but it's definitely something I'll ask about when I see the doctor in January. I don't think it's gotten worse this year. In fact, I think the prescription change may have helped (a bit, but not 100% obviously), since I recall last year having some contacts that I'd put in and literally couldn't see in one eye with. Oddly, I'd pull out another one (from the same box) and I could see. That's also why he switched me from monthlies to dailies. He believed that they were accumulating <something>, which was causing some kind of irritation (he pointed out some redness under the bottom lids), which may also be contributing to whatever the heck is going on. Back then though, it was consistent. A given lens would just make my vision in that eye blurry every day until I replaced it. Now, it changes day to day. Part of me suspects that my eyes aren't perfectly aligned with the prescription I've got, and aren't as good at adjusting themselves as they used to, and there's enough manufacturing variation in each lens (not sure how precise the tolerances on contact lenses are), that one lens out of a set may provide good vision and the next, not so much. The common factor is that it seems to vary based on changing out lenses. But maybe it's wishful thinking to blame the lenses...?

Your "condition"? Your eye thing?

It's what bifocals were made for.

Also sounds like your eyes may be drier then they were in the past. I had to give up contacts 30 years ago due to dry eyes from medication and when I noticed about 12 years ago problem with focusing and eye strain, I found out my dry eyes had gotten worst.

Now it's due to my auto immune system (Sjogren's Syndrome) and also is cause of dry mouth that is eating away at my teeth.

Gradually less ability to focus on near things? Yes. Day to day variation in blurriness when looking at distant things with what should be proper prescription lenses? Something else.

Oh. The dryness thing might be an issue (that might have been why the doctor switched my lenses to ones that should irritate less. Honestly can't remember). Maybe I'll make a point to put eye drops in each morning before putting the lenses in (and some contact friendly stuff during the day if that doesn't help). I'll try that and see if it helps. See! I'm getting health advice on the internet. What could possibly go wrong?

It's possible that you also need cushioning drops, assuming that isn't what he gave you.

Seriously, though, your eyes don't refocus as quickly as you get older. That's all bifocals are about, really. You can supposedly train them to focus better, but I've never had the patience to try it.

This is what I thought of when I saw this thread title. A song of blood and skin.

Not all that surprising. She stopped doing nude scenes herself (At least, full nude, she's still got those implied nude scenes, I think).
