I guess the real question is, what is the result that you think should occur due to this choice of cover?

What actually occurred. The guy with most of the creative control over the content said "not a fan, too rapey" the artist said "yeah, I can see that, not my intention let's pull it". I guess I could do without the near infinite whining of 30 year old socially awkward white guys telling me how unfair it is, other than that I think it played out appropriately. Like I said, context matters. If you want to do a cover of Morning Glories with a schoolgirl chopped up on a lawn, that's fine. The content of the book supports that. I don't have an issue with the cover without the context of the work it's tied to.

Of course it isn't, the writers couldn't do anything else with the character. That is the reaction, though. Most people see her as a vapid adrenaline junkie now.
Smasharoo wrote:
It's not in any way intentionally offensive to disabled people.
Neither was Killing Joke. Just people inferring what they want. People get offended by anything and everything.

It's still a variant cover. If you don't like it or are offended by it, don't buy it. There's a perfectly good regular cover sitting next to it with the exact same contents.

Why would I buy a comic?

Have they not invented copyright infringement where you are yet?

Great. Let's do Superman raping Dianna covers for Batgirl. Context doesn't matter at all, I'm sure you could sell some of those.

Albuquerque's full statement wrote:
My Batgirl variant cover artwork was designed to pay homage to a comicthat I really admire, and I know is a favorite of many readers. The Killing Joke is part of Batgirl¹s canon and artistically, I couldn't avoid portraying the traumatic relationship between Barbara Gordon and the Joker.

For me, it was just a creepy cover that brought up something from the character¹s past that I was able to interpret artistically. But it has become clear, that for others, it touched a very important nerve. I respect these opinions and, despite whether the discussion is right or wrong, no opinion should be discredited.

My intention was never to hurt or upset anyone through my art. For that reason, I have recommended to DC that the variant cover be pulled. I'm incredibly pleased that DC Comics is listening to my concerns and will not be publishing the cover art in June as previously announced.

With all due respect,

Rafa
DC's statement wrote:
We publish comic books about the greatest heroes in the world, and the most evil villains imaginable. The Joker variant covers for June are in recognition of the 75th anniversary of the Joker.

Regardless if fans like Rafael Albuquerque¹s homage to Alan Moore¹s The Killing Joke graphic novel from 25 years ago, or find it
inconsistent with the current tonality of the Batgirl books, threats of violence and harassment are wrong and have no place in comics or society.

We stand by our creative talent, and per Rafael's request, DC Comics will not publish the Batgirl variant. Â

DC Entertainment
No one at DC gave two fucks about the content of the cover.
Smasharoo wrote:

What storyline did that happen in? If you're going to cry about context, try actually paying attention to it.

Edit: Now that I think about it, a cover depicting the scene where Superman gave the Amazons a jar of Superjizz would be amusing.

Right, no one.

"The cover was not seen or approved by anyone on Team Batgirl and was completely at odds with what we are doing with the comic" -Cameron Stewart.

I mean other than the entire creative team stating repeatedly that they didn't think the cover was in any way representative of the work.

Let's just pretend that didn't happen though if it argues against the whining of people who don't even read the book but feel somehow slighted. Holy ****, did white male privileged just get impinged? To the pitchforks!!

Sorry, I was under the impression that when you said "person with the most creative control over the content" you meant someone that had control over the content, not a recent addition to the book. Either way, Cameron still wouldn't have any say on the regular cover, much less a variant. I mean, sure he could say he didn't agree with it, but the decision is ultimately out of his hands and in the hands of the "people with the most control over the content." Namely DC executives and the original artist of the work.

So still, no one who mattered in the process gave two fucks.

Sure, Gbaji. When I said "the person with the most creative control over the content" it would have been a wild leap to think I may have meant the guy who writes the book in question.

Let's just agree that you were wrong and go about our lives.

You're kind of right, I did kind of assume you knew what you were talking about. That would only be valid if we were talking about Image and not DC or Marvel. Then again, the guy's team has lost more sales in five issues than the book has seen in three years combined. Certainly the executives were tripping over themselves to listen to them.

Yeah it averaged shipping 35k when they took over, now it averages 50k. What a decline.

As of February 40k, actually. You're right though, it went from 80k to 35k in three years, while in five issues it went from a bump of 60k from the takeover to 40k now. I was looking at the bump from their takeover and not the month before, my mistake. A loss of 5k an issue versus what, one and a quarter k? an issue certainly is a sign of strength. They truly know what the book needs.

Well if integrity involves admitting to errors, I've already done so and you're still trying to hide yours by jumping from one topic to another. But keep trying to tell us how a co-writer of a quickly failing DC book has any creative control over his material.

Tip: The reason you're wrong (this one anyway, the others are various reasons) is the reason Image exists at all.

This is what you're going with, really? I can't really see the POV of a catastrophically insecure person, so tell me, will you look at this in a week and think "Jesus that was sad" or will you think "Yup, I got almost everything wrong, but trying to cling to a semantic point that doesn't really make much sense was definately the way to go. I mean I looked like a fucking fool, but I didn't have to have the courage to deal with that like an adult! Good work, me!"

He writes the story, fuckstick. Did Moore have any creative control over Killing Joke? GEE I GUESS NOT! I guess if you said "The person with the most control over the creative content of Killing Joke" you'd mean some mid level accountant. Because otherwise you'd be categorically wrong, and dealing with reality is too hard, right?

Name the person with more creative control.

I'll give you a few minutes to google the DC corporate hierarchy, because it's important that you take this farce all the way. Good work not responding to the Alan Moore stuff, because, you know dealing with being completely fucking wrong is hard for some people, I guess.

It's amazing to me that people *literally lack the ability* to just say "haha, whoops, I was wrong" without desperate qualifications or "Sure, all of the factual basis for my argument was completely wrong, but come on...the thing I want to belive is still what I want sooooo......"

What sort of mental progress do you people have from the age of 11 on? Does it just stop in place? It's terribly confusing to me.
