Hey now, the European map did not require you to name the various regions of each country.

The land masses of the US and Europe are nearly identical (3.7m square miles versus 3.9m) and the number of countries in Europe is identical to the number of states in the US (50). I'm thinking it's a reasonably fair geographical comparison. I'd expect a slight advantage for the US folks, just because of at some point studying WW1 and WW2. The results seem about right really. Pretty much everyone in the US was able to locate the UK, France, Spain, Italy, Germany, and Russia, with things getting more vague from there. And pretty much everyone in Europe was able to locate California, which is frankly all that really matters.

The GDP is pretty comparable too. 5/3 the population, though.

But is geography all about the size, though? I mean, what's more important: Being able to locate and name 50 countries or one country's 50 states/regions? Why should I know the location and name of your country's individual regions when you don't know the regions of my country? I've already had to learn English so you didn't have to learn Danish. Doesn't that count for something? Smiley: tongue

Thats one thing I regret, I wish I learned another language(obviously not to late to learn one). Americans are horrible at that in general. Always wanting people to know english.....Lazy indeed....i do think that if your going to spend significant time in a country you should learn thier language.

I never understood the Europeans that throw the "we know more than one language" thing out at Americans in general, like they do so out of some sort of... altruism... rather than plain necessity.

Can't speak for anyone else, obviously, but I did it in jest. Hence the smiley.

We learn English because it's a necessity. We're a small country, and @#%^ing no one wants to learn our language. We're also taught German/French, because those two countries refuse to teach their kids English. Then Spanish, because if you don't speak English, German or French, you mostly likely speak Spanish. Russian and Arabic are now optional subjects in public schools as well.

They used to teach Latin in high school, because some medical degrees require you to know Latin words or some ancient sh*t, but this might have been changed with the recent reform.

Maybe in 2016 the candidates will campaign in Denmark instead of Ohio to try to win the election. :)

Europe has closer to 7/3 the US's population and a significantly larger economy (roughly 4 tn). I assume you're thinking of the EU?

To be fair, Americans don't exactly have the greatest track record when it comes to European geography.

There's also this.
My favourite state in the USA is Canada.

I learned Mandarin pretty well. Then I got out of school and didn't have anyone to speak it to for 10 years. Now I'm lucky if I can string together a sentence.

I took four years of Spanish back in high school, and was pretty good with it. Over the 12 years I rarely used it, and am really rusty. I can understand the gist of what I read, but cannot fully understand native speakers anymore.

Up in the nort we had mandatory German from 3rd to 7th grade. In 8th grade it became an elective along with Spanish, French or Choir.

I switched to choir (duh) but kept up with my German some as you could order German Little Big Books through the Scholastic Book Club, (I LUVED Little Big Books) also my older sister was nearly fluent by this point. It's an easy language, but I remember little of it.

How many threads are you going to spam with the same statement?

I do agree that is disrespectful of him to do. He should just go back to smoking.

If I were going to criticise Obama I'd probably start with his habit of ruling by decree, or the political ineptitude that got him into that position in the first place.

He did not notify Congress within thirty days of obtaining and chewing said gum. Furthermore, the gum can't be proven to have originated in the United States, and even has a Foreign Student ID card.
