A UN report that came out yesterday, documents crimes against humanity by the North Korean Government.

Big Surprise there.

Quote:
North Korean leaders employ murder, torture, slavery, sexual violence, mass starvation and other abuses as tools to prop up the state and terrorize "the population into submission," the United Nations Commission of Inquiry on Human Rights (COI) in North Korea said in its report

So, what now?

The findings will supposedly be brought to the International Crime Court, but China says it will not approve of the charges.

The Report

Now nothing, nobody can pay for modernising or significantly changing NK. Even the few North Koreans who escape the country need special education for years to get used to modern society.

Nobody has anything to win from interfering with NK so nobody is going to.

No one wants to **** off China over it anyways.

NYT wrote:
Hua Chunying, a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, called the report “unreasonable criticism,” raising questions as to whether Beijing will use its United Nations Security Council veto power to block any action on the matter.

“We believe that politicizing human rights issues is not conducive toward improving a country’s human rights,” Ms. Hua said. “We believe that taking human rights issues to the International Criminal Court is not helpful to improving a country’s human rights situation.”

If NK ratchets up the drama at the same time that the UN is starting to get that worried look, things could go differently that previous performances.

Modernization is usually done via labor arbitrage pricing up the cost, so it's not a financial cost. There is the input energy issue of a porcupine regime which prevents exploitation of that labor pricing issue. Were the regime to magically disappear, the primary issue is one of border control, as porous borders cause political instability for neighbors. Ideally, from a geopolitical standpoint, you'd have a transfer regime that westernises over a period of 20 years or so. It would likely have to be dictatorial as you'd need to limit freedom of movement and handle the inevitable reactionaries. We had a chance for this in 2012-3, as Jang Song-thaek was amenable to westernization (really China-ization) but he's have needed support for a successful coup, most likely a rapid execution of the primary branch of the ruling family. We evaluated the risk-reward as insufficient (it was) and this opportunity was lost in the purge. Kim's doing a pretty effective job of preventing underclass uprising, but the bourgeoisie and generals may be weighing the risk of not acting under threat of further purges against the risk of acting. One way or another, it's likely to get bloodier before it gets less so.

Probably because they are a ******* joke and don't include any "crimes against humanity" that every other nation state doesn't partake in regularly. "Bad at cover" should be the charge, if any.

What we really need is someway to make it worthwhile for China to just ditch NK. I mean, I can't imagine they're very useful anymore anyway, and it's clear they've been losing patience in the past.

Maybe we can get Japan to trade them those little islands they're fighting over in exchange for cutting NK loose.

Not necessarily, there are tacit agreements by friendly nations to not point out the dirty laundry of their comrades regardless of how flagrant it is.

Don't be an idiot. The point of North Korea is to be the Washington Generals for the rest of the international community. No one is terribly concerned about the plight of North Koreans, and while there's some minor annoyance of S Korea which is troublesome, it's not like the vast resources of N Korea are worth spending much energy on. It's a problem that doesn't need to be "solved" until some very easy low resource solution presents itself.

Who wouldn't want an untapped resource that'd be happy and grateful to work 80 hours a week in a sweatshop?

They wouldn't be grateful. It's a problem seeking a low energy internal solution. Ie. elimination of the ruling family and transfer of power to a suitable west facing puppet who would allow MC's to loot the transfer pricing.

We're once bitten twice shy on that one. By once I mean uncountably, but eggs, omlettes, etc.

I realize you're @#%^ing around, but the complete lack of infrastructure compared to, say, Shandong, means it would take about 30 years to see any logistical advantage. S. Korea, of course would benefit.

I'm sure you could get someone to pony up the dough to fund it in time. Sure hurdles exist but right now they're basically an untapped resource for every modern market. Imagine millions of new cell phone customers, chomping on cheap noodles and making computer parts. You don't even need a government that's on "your side" per se, just one open to modernization and the free market.

I know, we showed them, letting them acquire nuclear weapons and propagate a totalitarian dynastic regime. Meanwhile we only provided them with a few tens of billion of dollars in aid.

But, I mean, we make fun of them so who is laughing now, eh?

No, no, just stupid trite jokes aren't allowed. The premise of your joke is how badly N Korea has lost the battle against the rest of the world in recent times. The problem is that it hasn't. It's been wildly successful at making no concessions and raking in tons of cash.

I really can't either, between the quasi religion they have developed for Dear Leader (or rather, the meme that has arisen about that) and how much of a joke they are in terms of actual threat, I find them hilarious in a horrible kind of way.

Threat, as in offensive threat?

Let me put it this way. Afghanistan had neither sea access nor nuclear capabilities.

So, a qualified no.
