Anyone else notice that the Google Olympics doodle is in rainbow colors...? A nod to the homosexual controversy perhaps?

It is, there's a quote about the olympic spirit, fair play and not discriminatng underneath the search bar too.

I think it's nice but google is getting loads of praise for it around the internet which seems a bit much to me.

Google is pretty pro-gay, so this isn't surprising in the least.

The entire internet is also constantly all over Google's **** so the reaction is also not surprising in the least.

I imagine the Google Olympics would be a lot like the Laff-A-Lympics, but instead of well known to completely unknown Hanna Barbara characters it'd be well known and completely unknown memes competing.

It's a pretty obvious jab at Russia's human rights violations.

Google is at the top of the list for gay-friendly companies (which is a minor relief - maybe we'll be treated equally under their totalitarian regime, when they finally take over completely). For instance, Google pays out the difference in tax savings to its same **** employees in partnerships (as in, it pays them more proportionally to what they'd save if they were legally married), and they extend benefit coverage to those partners (which very few other companies do).

Plus, this is pretty in-keeping with the public face of Google. They make you love them, so you think less about how evil they are.

I think the Olympic rings had something to do with the most common colours in flags or something.

There is a difference between literal legislation, and how the law is used by police to arrest, or not arrest people, and how the law is used to sentence people. Given the rampant, state-sanctioned homophobia in Russia, progressive western nations are concerned about nasty human rights abuses there. Russia has made homophobia more explicitly an official government position, more state sanctioned, put police and courts more on the sides of homophobes than homosexuals in the past year. When this started happening, it was almost a boycott-level problem for other nations, similar to the old apartheid problem in South Africa.

In fairness to Russia, most nations, even western nations, do a lot of really extreme, morally dubious, clean-up just prior to holding the Olympics. They usually target the Homeless, including street kids, and temporarily board-off dilapidated parts of town.

And it's not like the opposition to Russian hosting is limited to their human rights violations with homophobia. It's also heavily connected to the behavior of the government in general, particularly with control of information, suppression of opposition, and obviously-corrupt voting systems.

The homophobia just became a really easy, really apparent problem that was particularly easy to latch onto and speak out against Russia using. It's a lot harder to do that when you're complaints are about systems that are much more abstract and complicated.

It's also much easier to talk about human rights in specific reference to how you are hurting a group of people, when it lets you sidestep the more direct, politically-problematic language of, you know, accusing Putin of fraudulent voting practices that are allowing him to feign democracy while ensuring his own stay in power.

I understand that this might offend some people. But so what. If you aren't into sticking your dink in pink you are not a Human protected under conventions of Geneva. Start your own civilization half breeds.

I'm not sure what sticking a dink into pink means, but Women don't it so. So, they're also not human according to your definition.

You're technically and morally wrong. I suspect psychologically you're wrong too.
