I accidentally asked this question in the game forum. I only wish Dad was a gamer. It would make gift-giving easier.

I was unsure if I should link to the misplaced post or just re-ask the question here. I decided to put myself in quotes.....
Quote:
I gotta get a book in the mail today for my Dad, but I don't know what to get him. He likes action-adventure stuff but not fantasy; westerns, historical fiction...that sort of stuff. Non-fiction histories/biographies etc if it's not too dull and exceptionally good.

I usually only send him stuff I've read, but I've spend most of this year slogging through Lincoln's Team of Rivals. I got nothin'.

I made a new jam this weekend, Rhubarb-Grapefruit. It's pretty good. A jar will get added to the book. So if you have a book in mind that will go good with Rhubarb - Grapefruit jam, great.

Tom Clancy books seem to fit the bill I think. Not the greatest literature but they're always entertaining.

You may want to check out the Harry Turtledove series of alternate history Civil War books.

I've been intending to read Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl for a while now. It's spent a lot of time on Best Seller lists. Flip side of that is that the hardcover version is selling so well, they haven't even bothered with a paperback printing yet.

It's a shame he doesn't read any fantasy, because Patrick Rothfuss' Name of the Wind is easily one of the best novels I've ever read. If the aversion to the genre doesn't manifest as a hatred of anything in it, I feel like it might be a good way to test the waters there.

The Thousand Mile War.

An account of Alaska during WWII. I read this many years ago and loved it.

Second this. The writing sort of sucks, but as these sort of "Lad Books" go, the Reacher ones aren't bad.

Ian Rankin if he can read genre mysteries (or likes Scotland).

Clive Cussler is basically modern Sea Monster stories, but techno-thriller style, I know a few people who read and like his stuff.

The Aubrey Martin books are really very good. I know you said he's not really into historical fiction, but I think those might work.

I enjoy James Elroy books a lot, but that's a very specific sort of stylistic thing, which he may or may not enjoy.

Ken Follet and Leon Uris both write horrible, horrible, airport fiction books that have fairly compelling stories. If he could manage not to hurl the book across the room because of the quality of the writing, he might like one of those.

Micheal Lewis' non fiction books are pretty widely regarded as enjoyable reads. If he reads non fiction one of those might be good.

American Lightning is one of the better straight history books I've read in the last couple of years. He might like that if he reads history at all. It's very well written and the narrative hangs together well.

Or, of course, there's always 50 Shades...

Not using one makes it look like part of the list. I occasionally use quotes if there's some reason to. Otherwise they're just extra graphical junk that makes posts harder to read (for me, and I mean, **** you people, I'm obviously just posting here to re-read my own brilliant prose at a later date. )

The bookstore didn't have The Thousand Mile War, but check out the prices on Nooks.. This week only.

I got him The Fort, by Bernard Cornwell. I felt like I'd given it to him already, but when I saw the cover it wasn't familiar at all. I also got him a cool little lighted magnifying glass (got myself one too), and some Godiva chocolate (for his girlfriend).

He's going to be so WOWed by the jam though, that everything else will pale.

I have a hard time figuring out who you're quoting sometimes. It's hard to do a proper thread analysis when I don't know who said what.

I bought an HD+ around mothers day when it come down to $170. $150 is insane for a 9 inch full HD tablet. The B&N android overlay is a little clunky at times, but it's light, the battery life is excellent, and the screen is fantastic. They now ship with Google Play access by default. I got it mainly to read comics (which is does amazingly well) but I've ended up using it probably more than any other device in the house. I'd highly recommend it to anyone looking for a full sized tablet. The reading experience probably isn't as good as on an E-ink device, but it's good enough that I gave Hannah my kindle.

My dad has been using his phone a lot to read ebooks. I may have to nab this for him. Because hot damn. I just can't give up the paper format, I love it too much, but he's already made the switch.

Does the nook restrict access to any ebook formats?

Nook reads .epub files. Kindle books are about the only ones you'll not be able to use on a Nook. Also you can read .doc and .pdf etc.

My Nook has been faithful for over two years now. At this price I'd pick up another but my mad money this paycheck is paying off an speeding ticket (Smiley: glare)

Hmmm, I'll definitely consider that, then. My dad's ridiculously hard to shop for. Even with this, he might just end up reading the ebooks on his phone...

We usually default to replacing old cookware, because he won't throw it out even if it's rusting, or buying him bourbon.

You can download the free Kindle App on the HD+. Works flawlessly. One of the amusing consequences of them adding Google Play support. It's not really a Nook anymore, it's an Android 4.0 tablet with the B&N overlay (which you can probably replace with Nova or whatever if it bothered you enough, it hasn't bothered me enough).

calibre will convert most formats from one to whatever else you want, with a few DRM limitations. I tend to stick with the e-ink readers since they are easier on the eye strain for long duration reading sessions, which is much of what I do. I'm on my third Nook Simple touch, the first was a non backlight, I wore out the second one, now I'm on the third. I like the fact that I can put my entire library onto a large memory card and keep it with the device. The amazon e-ink screen is probably slightly better, but with only 2 GB internal storage and no expandability inside the device without going cloud based, I wasn't interested.

That being said, Nook is probably going to be killed off soon unfortunatly. They are discontinuing the Nook for PC application this month, and as of this time they don't have any plans for a new e-ink reader. which is annoying
