I was having an argument about Top Gun with a friend a couple years ago. I was talking about how great it was, and he laughed at me for liking the "gayest movie ever." I was like "what 10 year old boy didn't watch that movie and instantly want to be a fighter pilot?" Turns out, I hadn't watched the movie since I was 16, and hence had never picked up the gay subtext. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Oh well, I still defend its dogfight scenes as the pinnacle of the genre. And, it was a great compliment to the game After Burner for Nintendo.

I was born in '88; also, I've never actually seen Top Gun. I had a friend who absolutely loved it, though. All I know about it I know from him and people talking about it online.
I remember when I went to Colorado Springs to help my sister move to Ft. Bragg; we were in some karaoke bar when two AF guys sang that Righteous Brothers song together. Having not even seen Top Gun yet (and this was in '00 or '01) I laughed my *** off thinking, that's *so* gay! After seeing the movie, though, didn't change my opinion any.

When Top Gun came out I was living on a Navel Air Station, pregnant with my youngest daughter. I can't remember if I saw the movie in the theater or had to wait for it to be release on VCR. Between moving twice that year and the high risk pregnancy, my bet is I didn't see it when it first came out.

I like Metallica and about 3 Guns n' Roses songs. The rest of those bands - no interest.
There are a lot of bands that had great 80's careers, but they were formed in the late 70's (U2, The Cure, The Clash, etc.) The Smiths, Nirvana, and REM were from the 80's, however.

There was the occasional song I remember or liked, and some of the metal stuff I started listening to a bit like 10 years after it came out; mostly forgettable though. Spent the 80's mostly listening to country music, in retrospect it was a good choice.

A lot of Pop Music does suck. But the 80s did have a lot of great music by the likes of Phil Collins/Genesis, Michael Jackson, Prince, U2, Springsteen, The Replacements, The Police, Ac/Dc, Husker Du, Metallica, ZZ Top, R.E.M., Bob Dylan, Sonic Youth, Bad Religion, NOFX, Black Flag, The Misfits [before Danzig left], Danzig Himself [Mother is an awesome song - suck it], Bad Brains, The Dead Kennedys, The Descendents, Jane's Addiction, The Clash's London Calling, The Meat Puppets...
