Kim Jong Un in his latest round of saber-rattling has declared a state of war on South Korea.

The US is all like "pffft, whatever brony."

The Telegraph wrote:
The belligerent declaration came a day after North Korean leader Kim Jong-un signed off on an order putting its missile units on standby to attack US military bases in the South.

"We've seen reports of a new and unconstructive statement from North Korea. We take these threats seriously and remain in close contact with our South Korean allies," said Caitlin Hayden, spokeswoman for the White House National Security Council.

"But, we would also note that North Korea has a long history of bellicose rhetoric and threats and today's announcement follows that familiar pattern," she said.

This morning South Korea said there was no sign of any military activity to suggest the threat was anything other than more empty propaganda.

People keep telling me there's nothing to worry from N Korea, but I keep getting nervous about them being a catalyst for something. China is on the verge of a debt laden economic meltdown, with entire cities of empty buildings waiting to be sold. I don't think that's going to be pretty. If N Korea tosses a missile and actually hits something near it, it might set off dominos nobody else wants to fall.

If China goes under, who will buy our commodities!? And we're twice doomed because our currency is staying at a record high because it's still a safe haven after the GFC.

Especially since the Chinese people are finally rebelling, pushed over by the air-pollution crisis.

For NK what you should be worried about is the stuff they're not sabre rattling over.

Or they just get fed up and annex NK, install a better puppet government and develop the country. NK's far enough behind there a good bit of work to be done. That should keep any crises a bay for a while.

Almost certainly not the case. I say almost because the Chinese economy is fairly opaque to outsiders, but all independent measurements seem to indicate they're doing just fine. It's unlikely there will be any significant action taken against North Korea unless they do something ******* insane, which they show no real signs of doing. For all of the west's amusement at the internal realities, as a power structure the current regime is extremely stable. Also they have nukes, and in geopolitics that means never having to say you're sorry. They could probably actually attack a few S Korean outposts and face at worst a few cruise missile strikes for their trouble. They're the sideshow.

What *Russia* does with respect to China is the really interesting thing over the next decade or so. Russia has resources, china has labor and technology. If they show any real signs of moving closer together they become an attractive alternative for marginalized players (Cyprus, perhaps Iceland, Iran, etc. Not entirely impossible India sees a better deal there) and then there exists the potential for a real competitor to the US or the EU. Which could be a real problem and unbalance things significantly. That's the nightmare if you're US trade or defense analyst at the moment. N Korea's a stable handled detente for the most part. There are contingency plans, they're known, they know exactly where the line is, they won't cross it.

Thanks for the analysis, I really hope Kim Jong-un won't cross the line. I'm most worried about mistakes that can't be ignored. I know he's playing to an internal audience rather than the external audience.

The Russian-Chinese hook-up thing interests me as an idea. Apart from when they were Communist kissing-cousins, prior to that Russia seemed to have a real superiority/snobbish complex about European-Russians over Sino-Russians. Although I never underestimate a wealthy person's interest in getting wealthier, no matter who the bed-partner. What sort of perplexes me is that China all on its own has seemed set to overtake the US and Europe as an economic power for decades. I thought it was inevitable. As far as resources go, I thought that's what Tibet was all about: Lots and Lots of mineral wealth. Once China had enough economic mass, military mass seemed inevitable, but I pretty much thought there was a race going on to see if "Communist" party oligarchy could ride the tiger of massive wealth, or if capitalism ate out the political structure from the inside, with freedom of markets leading to a 1980s USSR type collapse where the people wanted some democracy to spread the wealth around.

NK does this every year, at least twice, during the two major exercises. March and August. I wish president Obama said "Bust a move"..I know that's what Christi would say as president.

In any case, I hope he waits till I get to Japan. I'll take some more Korean/war medals. I'm 30 days short of a stripe. :(

I think young Kim is rapidly building up a tolerance to attention (the dennis rodman effect). He seems to be needing more and more to catch that domination high.

Latest threat is to restart-up a nuclear reactor. He's getting further and further away from where the UN wants him.

I don't think this regime will be in power much longer.

...and someone needs to get the poor guy his own drone!
