I'd like to preface this thread, by saying that I used to like John McCain. If he had won the 2000 GOP nomination, I probably would have voted for him (&, being a NH resident at the time my vote might have even counted!) as while I liked many of Gore's policies, he pretty much lacked any kind of personality, charisma, or conviction. McCain, on the other hand, I thought would "do the right thing" (Except when it came to things like the savings & loans scandal- but any politician that went through what McCain did gets a pass on one), . Then Dubya got the nod, I got scared that he'd be easily manipulated by Cheney & co., & voted for Gore enthusiastically. Throughout 06' or so, McCain remained a "maverick", a friend of the Daily Show, & I thought "trusted to do the right thing".

Then he ran for President again, pandered to the assholes that got Dubya elected, picked Palin, & became a mockery of the John McCain of old.

And here we are.

Basically, on Wednesday McCain held a press conference on Benghazi, calling for more answers while at the same time skipping a classified briefing on Benghazi. When called on it by a CNN producer, this exchange happened:

CNN wrote:
When CNN approached McCain in a Capitol hallway Thursday morning, the senator refused to comment about why he missed the briefing, which was conducted by top diplomatic, military and counter-terrorism officials. Instead, McCain got testy when pressed to say why he wasn’t there.

“I have no comment about my schedule and I’m not going to comment on how I spend my time to the media,” McCain said.

Asked why he wouldn’t comment, McCain grew agitated: “Because I have the right as a senator to have no comment and who the hell are you to tell me I can or not?”

When CNN noted that McCain had missed a key meeting on a subject the senator has been intensely upset about, McCain said, “I’m upset that you keep badgering me.”

Now, his spokesman said it was a scheduling error. But really, this just further proves the old McCain is gone & has been replaced by another politician that would rather attempt to score political points rather than solve an actual problem.

McCain turned into petulant little bitch the day he lost the election. I don't think there's been a worse presidential loser since Nixon.

I'll admit, whenever I read a quote from McCain I read it in Michael Hogan's voice, and I just can't find it in myself to dislike him.

Hell, if McCain got an eyepatch I'd probably vote for him no matter what.

Why? He's a whiny entitled failure with a 13 year old girl's temper. "Moderate" John McCain is a creation of the media. He's as petty as can be, and as fragile as an egg. Any position he's taken that appears bi-partisan is almost certainly a revenge play for some perceived slight. I'm sorry he was a terrible pilot and was somehow shot down by a military barely beyond throwing rocks and sticks at him. He had a sh*tty time as a POW. So did many, many, other people that weren't little rich entitled boys who assumed that meant they got to be President. Sorry it didn't work out for him, can we please now marginalize him and stop giving him the spotlight for no reason?

This is at least the second instance of him pressing his opinion on something without really having any information about it.

Do you mean the second one today? Johnny B Crippled doesn't wait for information, he settles scores. That's it. Lost to Bush? He hates torture and is a moderate. Lost to Obama? He hates national healthcare and unions. If he lost to Lincoln, he'd love slavery. If he lost to Teddy Roosevelt, he'd want to burn down national parks. There's nothing there beyond infantile vengeance drive. Honestly. You can map out his entire career that way.

I like the illusion of John McCain. Maverick war hero, seen it all, wisened with his years and experiences, solid and steady and able to view all issues with a clear and cool head. It's a really romantic idea of a man.

I don't think he actually measures up, though. It's kind of sad. Lots of folks in the GOP just strike me as big babies. He's one of them.

Get with the times: Jon Huntsman is the new moderate GOP crush for liberals.

Of course, as with McCain, we're all in love with the idea of him. The actual person will probably disappoint.

Compared with all the also-rans from the election on the GOP side, he's a normal, rational human being. That alone is enough to make Dems kind of appreciate him.

Are you countering my assertion that liberals like him, or are you accusing liberals of liking charmless, wonky technocrats?

I wanted to post "yes" in Mandarin to answer, but there is no "yes" in Mandarin.

Also, yes.

Did you know "Yes" in Mandarin uses the same symbol as "Vote Democrat"? It's true!

Good point. Never noticed it before, but the pictogram for it is Huntsman fellating a donkey. It's all so obvious now that you make the connection...
