Last weather report I saw showed it making landfall at my town. Which was really weird, because we're small and never used as landmarks on maps. So that means we were ACTUALLY predicted as the point it would hit. Smiley: eek

Yeah, speaking of which, good luck with that megastorm moving your way.

Well, we *shouldn't* be getting major tropical storms, much less two years in a row...I blame global warningthe Obama administration.

That's a few towns north of me, and what you typically see as the land mark for this area. The next one you're likely to notice is Manahawkin.

Ding ding ding! We have a winner.

Scape-goating, pure and simple. I think it's disgusting, personally.

Is this where I insert a stock statement about how this is an inevitable result of socialism/nanny-state/etc?

Insert stock rebuttal about how they'd have been sued the shit out of if this has happened in the United States?

Yes. If it had happened in the US. And said scientists would rapidly learn to not lend their expertise to any statements which might be misconstrued in a way which might result in folks getting killed. See how the free market takes care of this?

What happened in this case was that the local government had a group of scientists show up to give a presentation about the probability of a large earthquake, and then followed it up with a PR guy telling the people there was nothing to worry about. This was not done for the sake of public safety, but to debunk one amateur who was telling people that a big earthquake was coming and to prepare for the worst. Turns out he was right and the scientists were wrong.

Point being that (as I thought I clearly pointed out above) scientists have become complacent with being paid by government agencies to provide scientific backup for policies. Now when those policies are based on good science and used in legitimate ways, there's no problem. But when the policies are less about science and more about PR, you get into problems. That was the case here. The government PR guy used the scientists to basically attack some guy who he felt was scaring the public. Instead of simply advocating caution but not panic (as a responsible government should have done), someone decided to debunk the amateur. And in the process ended out killing a bunch of people. The scientists knew that this was happening and allowed themselves to be used in this manner.

As others have said, demanding someone be held responsible isn't even remotely unique to a Socialist country.

I didn't say that. The methods of responsibility matter.

Is this were I insert a stock statement about how in a small government, big capitalist nation fixated on the idea that every individual controls and is completely responsible for his/her own actions, the victims of the earthquake would not only be scapegoating the scientists, but suing them for everything they and their families own and earn. "You didn't hedge an unknowable prediction well enough. Bankruptcy on top of jail for you!"

In such a society, the individuals would take responsibility for their own well being. I suspect you don't quite grasp what that means. Point being that instead of a government trying to tell the people not to worry about the earthquakes, it would have told them that anything is possible and to take whatever preparations they felt they needed to take. As a result, more people would have chosen to do what they would normally do (stay outside), and fewer would have died. While those who did might attempt to sue, they'd have a hard time doing so because they weren't told that they were perfectly safe.

Maybe they shouldn't live in active earthquake zones? Or near volcanoes, or below sea level in hurricane-qprone areas...

Yeah, speaking of which, good luck with that megastorm moving your way.

How are you gonna throw this into his face if you warn him about the storm beforehand?
