In response to Romney's remarks in Israel about the success of Israel vs Palestine and his evocation of Guns, Germs & Steel, Jared Diamond (author of said book) wrote an op-ed saying that Romney is either lying when he claims to have read the book or is functionally retarded for misunderstanding it so completely.

While I wouldn't bet against the latter, I'm guessing it's the former. GG&S is one of those books where it's easy enough to feel like you have the jist of it and feel smart at cocktail parties but which isn't a real enthralling page-turner to read. I'm guessing there's a copy of it somewhere in Casa de Romney with an old bookmark somewhere around page 65.

Add Krugman's acid comments about how the writers of Mitts economic policy have likely ruin their reputations.

Sorry folks if you already used up your 5 article limit for the month. Since my local newspaper went to trying not to have to pay reporters to cover news, I felt paying for the times online is well worth it just for the political coverage.

Lot of info in that article, not much connecting of dots though. So there's a civil war going on, with lots of fighting and killing on both sides. So anyone of that nationality has to be divided into one of the two camps, and therefore must be directly responsible for any killing which happened? Seems like a bit of a stretch. If the seed money had come from folks on the other side, couldn't the same news sources claim that his money came from violent communist rebels who tortured people?

Just don't see a lot of "there" there.

"When I was starting my business, I came to Miami to find partners that would believe in me and that would finance my enterprise. My partners were Ricardo Poma, Miguel Dueñas, Pancho Soler, Frank Kardonski, and Diego Ribadeneira."

Romney could also have thanked investors from two other wealthy and powerful Central American clans -- the de Sola and Salaverria families, who the Los Angeles Times and Boston Globe have reported were founding investors in Bain Capital.

While they were on the lookout for investments in the United States, members of some of these prominent families -- including the Salaverria, Poma, de Sola and Dueñas clans -- were also at the time financing, either directly or through political parties, death squads in El Salvador. The ruling classes were deploying the death squads to beat back left-wing guerrillas and reformers during El Salvador's civil war.

There, there.

Obama has an established foreign policy record. You can like it or not like it or go into conniptions over an iPod but so it goes.

Romney has no record which is why he made the trip. The trip was a fiasco and is still the only "foreign policy" experience he has to bank on. But you're welcome to keep moaning about iPods if you'd like; I'll still feel very comfortable about which candidate I'd want at the table with Pakistan, Iran, Syria, etc.

Yes? Couldn't both be true? Why would you want to argue it matters at all? Shouldn't corporations sell to whomever has the money to buy? You see, this is where the high ground exists for your side. He legally accepted funds from interested investors. So? Don't argue the other stuff, it's not the point. The point for you should be that money is money. If Bain traded them grenades for the cash, sure that's an issue. If they took payment in cocaine and the souls of dead children, then there's an issue with the cocaine part. Get it? Even debating the point lends it a legitimacy you should be denying.

I don't really weigh in on US political threads, not knowing them that much and when it comes to conservative policies in general, I generally won't speak up when gbaji will just come along and fucks up any ground work you may have laid in a conversation with anyone here.

Every now and then I might pipe up, but only for a few posts at most.

Yes? Couldn't both be true? Why would you want to argue it matters at all?

Um... I'm *not* arguing that it matters. I'm arguing against those who think it does. The specific point I was making was that if you look hard enough at any source of money, you can find some way to argue it's "bad". Which makes the argument irrelevant, doesn't it?

Maybe a different direction, but basically the same point you say I should be making. Except that the way you seem to think conservatives should say it involves them basically dismissing any ethical concerns about the source of money for something at all. I don't think that's a particularly great approach. Well, it's great if you want to fall right into the "greedy conservatives don't care about anything but making money" argument. Which I'm going to assume is precisely why you recommend it.

My argument isn't that we should ignore any ethical concerns, but that we should be reasonable in their application. The arguments being made here are not very reasonable. It's guilt by association of the most absurd degree.

First, try not to "assume" anything about why I do things. A fruit fly has a better chance of understanding quantum physics than you understanding my motivation for doing anything.

Second, you're wrong. It is the right approach. It's simple, concise and a compelling argument. That's the right approach. Arguing the minutia of something that's prima facie idiotic is a waste of time. This isn't a Saturday morning cartoon, you don't have to save "Form Blazing Sword" for the end. I wouldn't argue about the font on Obama's birth certificate. I'd just laugh at a fucking fool who thought it would be taken up by SCOTUS.

Memories....light the corners of my mind.....
