Well. the other thing is he can do is amend his return and later claim the rest of that charitable giving and to bring down his rate. Obviously this would be done after the election when it no longer matters.

He could probably swing a 9-10%, but I'd have to look into it more than I want to at the moment.

The number I heard was 9% but it's just that... the number I heard. I don't have a real cite for it and am too lazy to look for one.

"Around" 9% was stated in the Gawker article, via buzzfeed.

To play devil's advocate, it would be kinda bogus to figure someone's tax rate based on their income before charity. They're giving that income away and getting nothing in return - it's not even like a deductible business expense, where you get something of tangible value like labor or supplies. So it's not really even part of your income anymore, and shouldn't be included in that calculation.

But then to play devil's advocate with myself, not all charitable donations are truly devoid of value to one's self, and it is bogus that the Mormon church is considered a charity. Maybe if he was donating to some subsidiary of the Mormon church called like "The Mormon Church's Fund to Feed Homeless" or something, and that money couldn't be funneled back up into the main church administration, then it would feel better.

Or he could just donate straight to the Church of LDS, it's deductible too.

To be clear, I'm less worried about his actual tax rate but rather I find it funny that he would blatantly manipulate his taxes to meet a predetermined tax rate for political purposes, admit to doing exactly that and do so on the heels of declaring that if he paid any less taxes than legally required, he wasn't fit to be president.

I don't think this event disqualifies him to be president except that he's a terrible, terrible campaigner and this just reflects that.

Yeah, I know. I still think, in the spirit of the forum, there's value in discussing the actual merits of the various campaign mistakes, as separate from their predicted effect on voter perception.

As much as the tax thing is interesting, I am more interested on the 3.5 million he made and did not have to claim taxes on. So 1.9 mil out in taxes, 3.5 Mil in in untaxable revenue. A tidy 1.6 Million Net Profit. Not to bad if you ask me. I wonder how many of those 20 years he earned a net profit dodging tax on income, while still paying 13%+.

But I figured you'd be less amused by the #RomneyShambles seeing as how he's going to lose the election.

Mitt Romney's campaign packed the audience for the Univision forum at the University of Miami this week by busing in supporters "after exhausting the few conservative groups on campus," BuzzFeed reports.

Staffers even threatened to reschedule the event if organizers did not allow the exception to their student-only rule.

This must explain how he's cleaning up that Hispanic vote Smiley: laugh

...and the hits keep coming.

Quote:
Romney’s wife, Ann, was in attendance, and the candidate spoke of the concern he had for her when her plane had to make an emergency landing Friday en route to Santa Monica because of an electrical malfunction.

“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. I don’t know why they don’t do that. It’s a real problem. So it’s very dangerous.

Smiley: facepalm

Also:

Quote:
The crowd also heard from comedian Dennis Miller and musician and record producer David Foster, portions of the evening that were closed to reporters but acknowledged by the Romneys.

“I want to thank Dennis Miller for not just the humor, but the truth in the humor,” Romney said. “Much of what he said tonight, much of what he said was very encouraging and uplifting.”

When did Dennis Miller become a Republican? This is the first I've heard of him in a while.

You mean win a Nobel Prize? He already did that. If you mean move to Georgia and farm peanuts, well, that's just racist.

Dennis Miller claims he had an epiphany when 9/11 occurred that only conservatives knew how to defend us, yadda yadda. I think he's moderate on social issues and might be more libertarian but, really, I just find his show tedious and so never listen to it enough to say for sure.

I'm guessing the plane has air masks but I can't get too worked up about being concerned for your spouse or missing that fact when talking about it soon after.
