Bonus round!
  • I just watched "Exit Through the Gift Shop", and while I'm certainly not the most art-friendly person on the planet, it honestly made me wonder what, exactly, all the fuss was about. Regarding the whole thing. The only thing I could think throughout the entire second half was, "His name is Robert Paulson."
  • What does pop music really signify? By definition, "pop" music is whatever is "popular" at the time, but I'm not sure that any of it is any good. Based on my own experiences, I would define pop music like Britney Spears, N'SYNC, and the Backstreet Boys as awful, artistically bankrupt, and ultimately inconsequential. However, I'm sure that there were people like me in the '70's who thought that Elton John, Billy Joel and Steely Dan were equally as worthless, and yet I enjoy the work of those artists. Will young adults 30 years from now develop a deep appreciation for Ace of Base?
  • Michael Fassbender. What's the big deal?
  • I watched the Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson tonight. His first guest was Morgan Freeman, who nobody can honestly claim to dislike. And what do I see on Red's left hand but a single black glove. The other hand? Glove-free. Initially, I thought there was some weird Michael Jackson thing going on, but then I realized that it was probably disease-related. And that got me thinking how sad I would be when Morgan Freeman died. And that got me thinking how sad I would be when Bill Murray died. And that got me to thinking about what an awesome "In Memorial" montage that would make at the Academy Awards.

Wheeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I had heard of Ace of Base before, but until your post I had neither seen it spelled nor ever heard any music. I always thought they were some 90s rock band called Ace of Bass. I decided to look up their songs just now and was sorely disappointed.

I did, however, stumble upon this, which I thought was cool.

I liked Ace of Bass, actually, but then I like a lot of euro electronic music and such also. American pop music is so severely limited in artistic style, comprised mainly of whatever the radio execs figure will extract the most money from the parents of teenagers.

I'm at the age (and I suppose most of you are as well) that icons from my early childhood are just now starting to pass (well, within the last 10 years or so), and it's really taking a toll on my opinion of mortality. Hell, I was even mildly saddened by the scene in Zombieland where Bill Murray was killed. His actual death will probably be quite a melancholy occasion.

"Develop"? Probably not. But Elton John, Billy Joel and Steely Dan were consistently popular throughout their careers and into today (hey, Steely Dan is coming to Ravinia) so people are constantly getting exposed to their music. I have no idea what Ace of Base is up these days and maybe they're huge in Lichtenstein but they're not getting any American radio airplay except for the "Hits of the 90s" stations.

Now it's likely that people 30 years from now will still have a "deep appreciation" for the likes of Britney Spears who continues to record and perform and sell a bunch of seats & albums.

Was it really? (during the 2nd half)

No, but boy bands will have screaming fans till they die. I don't think Spears will still perform at 50 like Madonna, but Gaga might.

The more important questions is what NOFX shows will be like in another 10 years.

Awesome in everything he's in- the main british dude in the bar scene in Tarantino's Inglorious Bastards, Magneto in X-Men 1st Class, David in Prometheus, the sex addict guy. Announced as the lead in an Assasin's Creed Movie (could suck, though).

Possibly a shark.

Freeman dieing will disappoint me, I'll cry like a baby if Murray bites it as I met him once & have experienced his awesome.

I will not see their tributes at the Academy Awards, as I do not watch them. I have Murray's best of SNL though, so I doubt I'll have to get the commemorative one...

Couldn't attach a face to the name, because I'm terrible at remembering both an actor's name and their face, either or, but not both, so I googled him rq, and was like;
oh yea... Smiley: drool2

JJ Jr's mom tries to help her son and winds up making him look like a dip in classic "Stop helping, mom" fashion...
CBS News Chicago wrote:
The mother of U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. broke her silence about her son’s illness, acknowledging the congressman has had trouble dealing the “enormous disappointment” over the past few years.

“I’m not ashamed to say,” Jacqueline Jackson said at a speech at an Operation PUSH luncheon on Friday, “he thought he was going to be a senator. He thought he was going to have a chance to run for mayor. And young people don’t bounce back from disappointment like me and my husband.”

Jackson Jr. was once in line to succeed Barack Obama in the U.S. Senate before he became entangled in the corruption scandal of former Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who was convicted to trying to sell the Senate appointment to the highest bidder. A Jackson fund-raiser allegedly told Blagojevich he could raise millions of dollars for him if he named Jackson to the seat.

That scandal torpedoed any mayoral hopes for the congressman, who has not been accused of wrongdoing.

I think I'll be most upset when Mel Brooks bites it. Not only because the world will lose a comedic genius, but because what we'll be left with are the Waynes brothers for movie parodies, and that scares me.

If there's one good thing about Illinois, it's that our politics is never boring Smiley: laugh

Also, Joph, your post reminded me of how you mentioned Halvorson somewhere. Why am I slightly creeped out that I recognized that it meant we live in the same district? THE INTERNET IS TOO CLOSE TO ME NOW Smiley: tinfoilhat

Wonder how that mood disorder thing is going?

Quote:
WASHINGTON — Jesse L. Jackson Jr., the former Democratic representative from Illinois, pleaded guilty on Wednesday to one count of wire and mail fraud in connection with his use of $750,000 in campaign funds to buy exotic items like fur capes and celebrity memorabilia.

As part of a plea agreement, prosecutors will recommend that Mr. Jackson receive a sentence of 46 to 57 months in prison. A sentencing hearing is scheduled for June 28.

You think not wearing the cape is going to prevent shower rape?

With the cape, you can pretend that you're some sort of Shower Bear and scare away potential rapists.

Jackson's wife (a Chicago alderwoman) is also pleading guilty to some assorted fraud and monetary tomfoolery which is a little surprising since some doubted the feds would attempt to go after both at once. They have children and it can be a tough road to get a jury to agree to making the kids virtual orphans by sending both parents to prison on separate charges.
