Morrigan.

Leliana's voice is ridiculously annoying, and she's kinda crazy in all the wrong ways.

And Xsarus, if you're going Mage, you might want to crank the difficulty up another level (though I'd probably wait until you finish the first stage of the game--meaning when you get Morrigan). They are way more powerful than Warriors/Rogues.

I'm assuming you mean the Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage?

Put all your points into Magic and Constitution, only increasing your willpower to cover your sustainables, and sprinkling a few in Dexterity (if you need more +attack). Grab the core sustainables--the first three skills in the AW tree, Rock Armor, the second shield in the Arcane tree, Fiery Weapons, Haste, Miasma (I think that's all). Death Magic or the life syphon sustainable recommended.

You now have a Mage clad in the heaviest armor the game offers, which lets you (with your sustainables) cap your damage mitigation and defense (you almost never get hit, and only for negligible amounts). Toggle Blood Magic on and off to access Blood Wound (nothing else matters). You are now locking down whole rooms of mobs, killing all the lesser ones outright, with one spell. Your auto-attack does more than enough damage to kill everything left quickly.

Hilariously broken. Even more so if you port it to Awakening. Battlemage/Blood Mage/Arcane Warrior was LOOOOOL.

Yeah, trimage. Blood/Arcane +elemental enchant warrior on main, blood/death morrigan, and spiritheal/buff Wynne. All enemies locked, quivering, in place by coils of their own blood, trapped in arcane prisons, or feebly harassing the aegis'd up quake tank. Any swarms get melted by mushroom clouds of entropic death. Parties like this are the reason Magic is generally outlawed in this game.

I'd use whatever characters most align with the personality you want to roleplay. It's annoying to say, roll as a good guy, and have Morrigan ******* and moaning because you're not turning everyone you see into a newt.

Zevran operates at a severe disability in that I have Leliana first and therefore think "Why would I need two rogues"? So Zevran goes into mothballs and never gets used or communicated with.

Plus he's pretty annoying when I do talk to him.

I can't stand Zevran--he's just so annoying. Granted, he has more depth to his character than you first imagine he does, but it just takes too long to get him to talk about it. And even then, he's still just irritating.

I find Morrigan's disdain far less irritating than Leliana's sunshine and butterflies, to tell the truth. Morrigan's only bad when I help someone she thinks is worthless (and she often has a point). Leliana tends to make me cringe...

Sten is just... meh. Not enough personality, no second specialization slot, and annoying dreadlocks.

Ohgren, frankly, disgusts me.

I generally like Alistair a lot. He can be whiny at times, but he usually makes me smile.

Wynne can be preachy, but she's grandmothery enough for me to forgive it.

My usual team is Wynne (CC/Heals), Alistair (tank), and either Leliana or Dog/Shale/Morrigan, depending on whether or not I'm a Rogue and my specific needs.

Ugh, Wynne drives me nuts. Leliana is okay but kinda crazy. If I'm a rogue I go with Alistair + Wynne and mix up the third party based on where we're going. If I go mage I heal so I don't have to deal with Wynne and bring Zev or Leliana along to pop boxes.

First place through I went with Alistair, Leliana, and Morrigan. The dialogue between them all was pretty fun, especially if you get the ladies fighting over you. I also killed Wynne instead of recruiting her by accident, so that sorta limited my options. Oops.

Next playthrough was Alistair, Morrigan, and Wynne. And I was a mage. Easiest time I've ever had; with three mages you completely own the battlefield. And Wynne as a healer meant I could focus more on dishing out pain than healing my party. I don't really like Wynne's character though; she just doesn't strike me as interesting as the others. Unfortunately she's almost a necessity if you aren't a mage or don't want Morrigan in your party.

Next one through I played a slums dwarf warrior. Probably the toughest playthrough. I eventually made myself into a decent tank, and tried to switch it up a bit; used Zevran, Wynne, and Oghren. It was more interesting... but tough.

Final playthrough was as a noble human female rogue. That was a lot of fun; all the extra points let me take every ability I could ever dream of. Took Alistair as a tank, Wynne as a healer, and Shale as a buff-bot; went straight ranged after finding that melee felt kinda limited. By the end of the game I was dishing out death left and right. Imported that character into Awakening... good Lord. Archery is unexpectedly powerful; only way I could have made it better was a Leliana + Zevran + Shale party. I watched a few videos of that combination absolutely ripping up the bosses of the game.

Granted, its power is comparable to a blood mage, but the mage will also have CC and heals and potentially the best armor in the game. Really, mages are broken.

As for companions, I suggest romancing Morrigan first, breaking it off and seducing Leliana, then rekindling the romance with Morrigan using her second specific-item (a mirror bought off a vendor in the dwarf city). It seems DA's designers didn't remember to close the logic loophole that an ended romance can be restarted with it.

As for female Wardens, I'd go with Alistair over Zevran any day.

And if given the option, "harden" both Leliana and Alistair. Makes Leliana more badass, and Alistair more decisive. Also gives better endings no matter what you choose during the game (IMO).

It worked the opposite way with me. I romanced Morrigan and Leliana, was told to break it off with one. Broke off with Leliana but stayed friendly. She told me she was happy for me and thought Morrigan was beautiful, etc. Then I completed Leliana's personal quest and, a couple dialogue trees later, she confessed that she loved me. We knocked boots and stayed involved but neither party gave any further ultimatums. I think the loophole there was the "breakup" requirement has already been met but doing Leliana's quest when she was so favorable to me knocked her back into love. It worked out well for my character anyway since This was about the point where Morrigan goes all frigid in the ****-times department

Now I'm curious if I can replicate this with Leliana while involved with Alister or *shudder* Zevran...

Also I seem to be the only person who finds Oghran to be good times. I like having him in my party for the banter.

Stop judging men who want to get creative with her shape-shifting. Smiley: mad

Oh, for whoever was just starting the game (Ugly? I'm too lazy to scroll up), you really don't want to choose Shapeshifting as a specialization. I suppose you might be able to find a fan-made fix, but it's damage calculations have been broken since the game launched. Basically, the game doesn't use your spellpower stat (a derivative of your magic) to calculate attack accuracy or damage. So you pretty much can't hit squat unless you invest heavily in dexterity.

You might also think that it melds well with Arcane Warrior, but all your powerful sustainables are deactivated when you shift.

Don't take it, and don't invest in it with Morrigan beyond what she has initially. Unless, of course, you patch it. Or randomly want to make them useless.

FYI for ugly. None of my content aside from the main game and awakening was actually working, apparently you need to upgrade to 1.05, which is what I'm doing now.

I liked that, actually. It makes it feel more real. If you keep Alistair as a character with a meek constitution, then it's no surprise that he doesn't stand up for what he wants, but rather just does what's expected of him. Plus, they were technically your political ambitions, if you don't harden him, because he doesn't even want to be in power. You put him there to get what you want.

If you harden him, he wants to be king. Which also means that he's willing to stand up to the political backlash of having a mistress that everyone knows about.

Yeah I didn't find out about hardening Alistair until after I already tried to comfort him. I wish there was a second option of how to harden him, but oh well. I guess if I play through a second time as a rogue, I'll know. I think I must just suck at this game, because almost any time I even have the settings on normal, if it's a tricky encounter, my entire party gets wiped out. But then if I have it on casual, I'm bored out of my mind. My character is a blood/spirit healer mage. I don't know if I have my party members tactics messed up or what, but Wynne usually ends up dying really quick, and then Alistair goes down almost immediately after, and then me and Leliana are dead shortly there after. It's annoying.

I wouldn't worry too much about making spec mistakes. I've found the game to be pretty forgiving much of the time.

I've only installed one mod and that's "Skip the Fade" which is, in my opinion, a must have for subsequent play-throughs. I wouldn't advocate skipping it the first time you play but it's easily the place the game drags most. I might install one or two quality of life style mods (there's one for a storage chest in your camp) next time around. I'm not really looking to replace all the model graphics or anything -- while some of them look great as models, I'm too used to the people being the people I know.

He won't dump you if you happen to be a noble. Fairy tale wedding and all, then he shows up in Awakening and is all "Hey, I love you, but I can't hang out and help you. So good luck with that."

Wow, you've got an awesome writing style.! I really dig the narrator's back story, humor, sarcasm, and the plethora of pop culture references. Altogether a refreshingly different RotR journal (not that I don't like the more traditional ones, mind you).

Sure, if you're willing to wait an hour for each to be 'disarmed'.

Don't you need a surgeon's license for that, anyway?
I think he wants me like a walking talking pebble. If we get to a treasure box before a trap, I can lift the lid, while the rogue is doing more important things. If it's locked, I can notify the rogue s/he's needed. When we get to a trap, throw me, and if I blow up, it was armed. Except I can amble over, no throwing required.

I really would like them to change it in DA3 so that having a Rogue in your party is sufficient for opening locked chests with your main. They don't need to change traps, since that's actually a tactical change...

Then you don't get to hear Leliana laughing at how stupid you are for including her in the party trying to do it yourself.

No, no. I'm sure he has the utmost faith in your ability to spot traps and get inside people's boxes.

Leliana is even more annoying than when you ask Lydia to carry something...

Oh, I know. But then he got all mad when I spared Loghain anyway. He's just so sensitive. Smiley: laugh

I like Leliana. Smiley: frown Then again, I like pretty much all the characters thus far, except Sten. He's boring. Although the cookie thing was pretty funny. I just met Oghren for the first time, so he's not in my party yet.

It really sucks that Morrigan got stuck with crappy shapeshifting as her specialization. Wynne makes a much better healer, but the conversations between Morrigan and Alistair when you're out exploring are just hilarious. I miss those.

Okay, so maybe she's not THAT bad. But it's a lot closer than it should be.
