China, the Yuan and USFollow

Presumably China has been artificially suppressing the value of the Yuan for a while now in order to boost exports.

Many of our law-makers are determined to attempt to level the playing field, ultimately of course, yielding more US jobs.

There's a bill moving through the the house whose aim is to apply retaliatory tariffs for nations that are found to have “misaligned” currency, even if Treasury does not find monetary manipulation.

What's interesting about this issue is that congressional support seems completely non-partisan.

Obama frets that this legislation will just **** off the Chinese and ***** up on-going negotiations.

Speaker of the House Boehner(R) fears a trade war if this bill were to pass.

House Majority Leader Reid(D) sponsors the bill and is counting on law-makers from both sides of the aisle to get it passed.

Speculation is, of course, that it's all just politicking - a bit of saber-rattling to detaunt the chinese and timed to catch votes for being good pie-tenders.

How does the House Asylum vote - Yay or Nay?

I abstain (I can do that, right? Or is it that I refuse to vote?). I honestly would need to review how it could potentially affect us. I understand wanting to protect US jobs, but I highly doubt it would do much besides **** off the Chinese. Tariffs generally are just... blah. Isolationism sounds good in theory, but in practice it usually comes back to haunt the isolationist country... we didn't grow into the powerhouse we are today by shutting off trade to outside countries. Hell, traditionally we forced other countries to trade with us at gunpoint (hello, Japan).

I'm leaning more toward nay, now that I think of it.

Nay, and I don't think I need to elaborate on why.

Meh, I'll need to do some research on it a bit before deciding. Abstain for the moment. While it's true that usually tariffs = bad, I'm no economist (then again, neither is Congress).

I think that China's suppression of the yuan will end badly - I can't see the kind of growth they've had sustainable much longer. They're going to run up a bubble and the resulting pop will be very messy. Perhaps letting them crash and burn will improve our own trade status, except that China owns so much of our debt that it will make things worse. but I don't really know how that works exactly, so I can't rely too heavily on that assertion.

It take Yuan to know Yuan!

Anything that weakens China economically and thus militarily I am all for. They aren't ready to go toe to toe with us. Yet. At their current buildup rate they will be within 10 years though, at least on a limited scale in the south pacific.

I'm guessing they're trying to bring an overheated economy in for as soft of a landing as possible.
