I agree with this motion.

It generally keeps both sides of the fence happy.

No we're not. Stubs and I are the most likely to say something. He's no rated and I barely ever rate, period. 90% of the time, I don't even go into those threads anymore and Stubs is impotent.

Nah, we have a scifi/fantasy forum and I haven't seen any anime that wouldn't meet the description.

There's not enough traffic in scifi/fantasy to make a credibile argument that it'd be disrupted by anime chatter. There's a total of nine threads that had any activity in November. There's a new thread posted approximately once a month, if not less.

I don't care much either way but it seems pointless to me.

Please get all of your friends to vote for this!
I'd not have fears about what will happen with the forum itself.
I'm sure as it develops we can adjust it to cover the Anime Gene and Manga with no problems. I've helped setup and moderate one of the worlds larges Anime forums in the past and this will be a good time to open one here.

To many posts are put in the wrong forums and rated into obilivion by others when all the person wanted was information or help with an Anime Question.
Let's open a forum here and get the Dragon Ball rolling!

Wouldn't that be a good reason to make the new forum?

Most anime is not strictly science fiction and fantasy, at least not in the way that Star Trek or Lord of the Rings are. Most have only mild elements, in the same way that technically Heroes and Numb3rs are scifi shows or in the same way that Black Adder is technically a fantasy show.

The ScifI and Fantasy forum as it stands now is not suited to contain anime. I'm not completely against anime being under the umbrella of a much broader forum to pull in other interests, but currently nothing is remotely suited to it, and there is a significant audience that rivals that of existing cross game forums.

I can't imagine pretending that they're anything but. It doesn't have to have dragons and lasers to be scifi/fantasy.

Of course it is. It's an existing forum, it's seldom used as is and its umbrella definition would include most anime. I could see an argument if the forum was brimming with stimulating conversation re: how many dragonriders of Pern it takes to kill a Jedi but that's really not the case.

There is a lot of anime that doesn't have any sci-fi or fantasy in it. It's just rare that it ever makes it over to the states in anything other than subtitled form, because they're not action shows.

Off the top of my head . . . .

Dramas: Rurouni Kenshin (period drama), Nana (pretty much an animated soap opera)

Sports shows: Prince of Tennis, Figure 17, etc -- sports is a HUGE genre within anime and manga. There's manga made for basketball, poker, golf, US football, rugby, baseball, hockey. And there are series that use the sports template but do non sports-things, like the manga bout the sommeliers o_O

High school romance: The aforementioned Bokura ga Ita, Marmalade Boy, Hana Yori Dango (that last one is the only anime I've ever stopped watching because I was tired of my emotions being strung out so badly.) Anime and manga made for girls also contains a lot of yaoi.

Slice of life comedies: Azumanga Daioh, Lucky Star

No sci-fi or fantasy elements are present in any of these series at all, and there are hundreds more but I'm at work and brain dead.

Ok. How about if we give you the Vanguard forum? That's less used than SciFi/Fant!

You are right, but there are plenty of anime that simply don't contain any elements of science fiction or fantasy. Beck is an anime about a highs schooler's struggle to become a musician. Bamboo Blade is a comedy about Kendo. There are a myriad of generic romance anime about people in love. Akagi is about an insane Mahjong gambler. Lucky Star is Seinfeld for Otaku. Black Lagoon is a gritty action series. There are enough anime that are neither science fiction nor fantasy to prevent the cateogry of anime from directly fitting under the umbrella of the existing forum.

Let's pretend you could categorize all anime under scifi and fantasy, for the sake of argument. It wouldn't matter. Currently the SF forum isn't being used to discuss anime and it is unrealistic to expect that to change spontaneously.

As I said previously I don't have a problem with anime being merged with other categories under a larger umbrella, but it needs a place to go and there is none at the moment.

Signed. I'd support this. I don't think it should be merged with the sci-fi forum though because that seems to be primarily about books and sci-fi shows, which don't often have much to do with anime.

Get it renamed, nuke the existing threads, move all the threads from Vataro's journal, and I think we'd be good.

(Hell, the hard part is step 3 - moving everything from Vataro's journal to the new anime forum - and that's more "long and boring" than actually hard.)

Umm... Figure 17 is about a girl who fuses with an alien bio suit, and that alien copies her DNA and becomes basically a clone of her. They fuse together into an ultimate fighting being in order to battle against an invading alien force.
