Just wondering. My work is giving me the choice of blackberry (sorry Rim, you blew it with 2 phones with non responsive touch screens) an iphone and a samsumg ATIV s.... If I had the choice I would choose android but sadly that isn't a choice. I am wondering is there any reason to choose the windows 8 phone? I am trying to not be a blind apple consumer here, I am just not seeing a reason to windows.... Internet. Explorer.

Good God No. There's a reason all competent programmers don't suffer to use Windows on their home computers.

Aren't the Window phones the ones that the designer was given a jpg of what the phone should look like, and they left the white border on the final product?

Awesome, I figured that was the answer but like I said was trying to remain open minded. Admittedly it was going to be a hard sell as soon as I saw.. Internet explorer

Given a choice I'd choose a Windows phone, but not the Samsung model. Stick with Nokia or HTC.

Does windows 8 work better on a phone than on a PC? Because I've nearly thrown my wife's laptop out the window a few times now...

They're actually reversing the whole tile thing in 8.1 (free) and giving people back their desktops, so you won't have kick and scream that much.

I have one friend with a Windows 8 phone and he adores it.

He's that friend, though. The one everyone thinks is a little strange in the head. He has a deep fascination with Communist China (and did his master's history thesis on it) and has yet to meet a girl who understands that deep obsession.

So take that as you will.

It made more sense to go with the iphone anyway because I already own a bunch of apps that I can load up and I use itunes already so I am not having to inconvenience myself. One coworker is going for the Samsung though. I'll keep you updated.

He said he is choosing it "because it is fast"

I don't really care enough to use windows 8 for that. Also, Internet explorer, which is the only time I'd care about speed, is SLOW ... I don't think he realizes that.... but I don't care - his issue, not mine.

Oops. Smiley: rolleyes

Well, maybe, especially if Norton and Windows both think the other one is controlling the firewall. Our Windows 8 laptop came with a free bit of Norton anti-virus stuff pre-installed (30days? 90days? I don't remember...). It's pre-installed and free right? What could possibly go wrong? They wouldn't give you a system with a gaping security flaw right out of the box would they? Turns out Norton and Windows 8 don't work together so well, or at least didn't at the time. At some point in trying to figure out what was happening to her laptop it seems the firewall wasn't on and stuff got onto the computer. Needless to say Norton is gone now. Smiley: rolleyes

At home I run Windows 7 on my main system and have a Fedora Core Linux box running that I use to goof around with. I'm also developing my own 32-bit general purpose OS from scratch. My long-term goal is to have a functional computer running software written entirely by me.

At work I use umpteen versions of Windows, Linux, Solaris, VxWorks, LynxOs, RedHawk Linux. I also work with a really old custom OS that runs on an old Motorola 68K for which I have to program mostly in assembly. Yuck.

I run Windows 8 at home and at work. Yes I'm a .NET developer, but I also do ruby, python, and occasionally, node.js. The perception that "competent" = "linux" is ridiculous, as is the unwarranted hatred for Windows 8. As a Windows 8 user for going on 8 months now, I can honestly say the only really annoying aspect of it as a desktop user is when certain file trigger a "metro" style app to open, or when I try to alt tab and have to navigate around 6-8 hidden "metro" apps in the alt-tab screen to get where I want.

Back on topic, if you can't go android, Windows 8 Phone is a good choice. The "metro" interface is actually rock solid when it comes to touch screen devices.

Because people who are more important than me haven't demanded android phones. My opinions on the matter are irrelevant.

Basically, I expect in 3 or whatever years when the contract on my new phone is up, THEN, I might be able to choose an android because someone who is important will have wanted one by then. Until then, nope.

On the bright side, when I started I got a flip phone. Then it was a blackberry... not even any choice about which one. So getting to choose between phones is a step up.

Damn, 3 years is a long time for a phone contract... At the end of the 2 years mine lasts I'm starting to really want a new phone and it's starting to show some serious wear, I'm nearing one year with my current phone now and it's already starting to bother me at times (like not being able to handle movies well unless they're 480p or so).

I've considered moving to a 1 year plan but that costs a good bit more per month so it's not quite worth it to get rid of those last few months of waiting for a new phone.

Windows 8 on a WINDOWS phone.. I'll pass. I had one of the first windows smart phones, before the release of the first iPhone and it was great, but I simply see no reason to get a windows phone.

My theory is that Microsoft created Windows 8 just to force people to adjust to their windows phone interface because they have a large PC OS base. Doing so, people will feel more comfortable using their phones because it's the same interface.

That's very Apple-ish... Let me choose what I want, because of that, I will forever be an android user, Samsung preferably. Speaking of, just got myself the Galaxy S4, yesterday!
