Advertisements taking over the internet :/Follow

I remember first getting the internet the worst thing you had to look at was the occasional banner ad. Now it is getting to be almost as bad as cable TV. Can't watch a 30 second Youtube clip of somebody doing something stupid without being forced to watch an AD, same goes for any sort of on-line show. I always have liked to watch Nostalgia Critic. I never did mind to watch a 30 second ad for 20 minutes of show. Now his videos have 2 more ads stuck in the middle of them. Before on youtube only a few more popular videos had Ads but it seems like more and more are sticking them in there. Its one thing to watch a short ad when you plan to watch a 20 minute video. But it is BS to expect someone to watch a commercial when you have a 30 second clip.

Whats even worse is when you have to watch an Advertisement in order to watch an Advertisement. Go to watch a newer movie/game trailer and you get stuck watching an ad first many times.

This site has gotten just as bad as anything. I am looking at 4 advertisements right now, and it poped up a 5th ad when I first started typing this that wouldn't even let me X it out until waiting a few seconds.

I hate it. It sucks balls. It pisses me off.

But you know what? In the end, if people paid for these *services*, they wouldn't have to make money through advertising. It's a trade off.

What annoys me is how the ads are either getting smarter and figuring out how to bypass adblockers, or the adblockers are getting lazy/getting paid to let certain adds bypass them. Or those video sites that encode pop up adds into the ******* play button on their videos, those are just obnoxious.

Except if it were baby photos, it would be like looking at before and afters of Michael Jackson. Only instead of turning into a white guy, he changes into a chick!

That's because most of the newer methods of advertising (and certainly the ones relating to videos online) require the user to completely view the advertising content before the actual content is even accessible. It's a lot easier to block an ad when the ad is displayed alongside the content, rather than as a prerequisite.

Not on properly configured Chrome! Smiley: schooled

I whitelist on request, and pay for premium on sites such as ZAM where I spend enough time to justify what averages to a few bucks a month. But the worst of the fnords are scrubbed clean from my tubes.

It's not really surprising, though. Prevalence and number of ads has always been relative to the number of people reached. In the heydays of radio, you didn't have 5 minutes of ads like you do today. Television shows used to be 27 minutes, now they are like 23. Etc. Same with the internet. As those two mediums (along with publications) reach fewer users, they need to increase their presence elsewhere. Ads on popular websites are now the most effective way to advertise--it's way cheaper than television and is seen by far more people.

But yeah, Adblock. Still have to deal with annoying youtube ads, but everything else is blocked out. I let Zam through before I had premium, but that was it.

Really? I use Adblock and don't even see the ads on YouTube. It might be NoScript doing that, though.

Well, I did discover this one form of energy, but the problem is that prolonged exposure seems to cure all known illnesses. So understandably I'm having trouble thinking of a way to monetize it.

No it's not, which is what makes Americans so silly for clinging to a word like freedom.

When an American speaks of freedom, the adjective "individual" is implied on the word freedom. Still kind of laughable in this day and age, but not in such a vague frame as you present it.

So 3 for 1 now? Does me pointing out that "free" as in "no cost" is a different meaning than "free" as in "without restraint" count as 4?

No, that's the first troll. Had you not replied with that, it never would've been a success.

HA! You kids today. I remember a time when you'd get pop-up ads faster than you could close them. Your task bar would be full with little tiny tabs. Only way to make it stop was to pull the phone cord out of the modem.

That's right, I said phone cord.

Damn you free internet pron...

speaking of obnoxious adds, this Diablo 3 Beta key quasi-pop up on alla is really, really, really ******* annoying. You close it, and it's done for the page, but the second you refresh, go back, or go to a new page, there it is again, slowing down how long it takes for the page to load, and being obnoxious. Given that you have an avatar, I'm guessing you have premium and are still seeing the ad.

There's exactly the reason I quit premium. There's no motivation to make premium Zam.com "ad free" as it once was and as it purports to be...
Zam.com, in its premium services info screen, wrote:
100% ad free
...That went out the window when they started modifying the site layout explicitly to push more and more ads on the users, premium or not.
