So as I am gallivanting in Japan I've come across some really interesting/awesome things and people.

Take for instance Exhibit A. Exhibit A is totally awesome.

And then we have Exhibit B. Exhibit B is really interesting. Magnificent.

I've yet to find an Exhibit C though.

Basically Japan is awesome. I've been here for a week so far and I got 3 more weeks here in Tokyo then I will be going to the frozen tundra up north to do relief work for 2 months.

The food here is amazing also. :D

Oh for sure. There is a lot of stuff to see and if you're into history there are many old temples, shrines, and 1000 year old trees to see.

I want to visit a 1000 year old moss garden. Is Japan everything you'd ever hoped it would be?

You people in the states scare me. At least that's what I gather from the news.

Japan has always been my #1 dream destination. Haven't had a chance to go yet, but I have a feeling I'll be able to manage it sometime in the next 4 years. The old palaces and temples would be the big draw (I wrote a pretty big piece on Ginkaku-ji once), but I feel like I'd see something crazy and new every other block in Tokyo, too.

Quite jealous.

What is it about Japan that makes so many people see it as a dream destination?

To each, their own but I jsut don't see it myself and am curious.

It's a land of fierce dichotomies, and an exportable culture. Things the current generation tends to value, it's also a bastion of western values in the eastern world. Far enough away, but close to home. Paris and the euro touristry may be the equivalent in terms of mystique for your generation.

Yea, I've never understood Paris either. I think that's a generation or 6 before me.

TLW put it pretty well. The dichotomies are really fascinating to me...between the natural and the synthetic, tradition and innovation, etc. etc. They're quite well pronounced in Japan. It also strikes me as crazily eccentric...the differences between western and Japanese culture seem so pronounced, and that'd make for a neat visit. At the same time, there are some comfortable shared values that resonate with me, like the technophilia and gamer cultures.

I'm in architecture, so that's a big selling point to me as well. I find a lot of asian architecture particularly beautiful, from small design to the big temples and palaces. The theories behind the different styles are neat, and the ways that it intersects with the greater culture are very specific and intricately detailed.

Japan and China are probably #1 and 2 on my list of dream destinations. Istanbul is probably my #3, and could even be my #1, but I just don't know enough about it yet to be as excited by the possibility as I am with the other two.

China is worth a trip, assuming you like fortifications and spicy food. Skip the NGA complexes, unless you're in it for the sociology.

But why do you prefer those locations, as opposed to Paris, or Japan? Something about the historical experience, I guess?

Yea, I love ancient history and midieval history. I'm also a big fan of the Americna Civil War but i've already visited a few of thos locations. Loved Gettsyburg.

Like I said, I wasn't knocking Japan or other places, was just curious what draws people to them.

I lied before. It's all about the anime. The dirtiest, weirdest, most perverse anime you can think of. Oh yeah.

Also, you really do need that spellchecker.

No love for England, Ugly? No yearning to visit the motherland? That is, unless of course your ancestors were Scots. In which case, never mind!
