If you define Atheism as a Religion, some key texts would be:

Origin of Species
The Selfish Gene
The Big Idea
A Brief History of Time

Well, those are a start I suppose..

None of these have to do with Atheism. Summa Theologica was the book that sold me on Atheism.

Your mother's a *****. You like to jack off dogs. That's right, you heard me. You like to grab that dog by the bone and rub it like a ski pole. Your dad? Gay. Your priest? Straight. **** off and let me post. It's not true, it's all in good fun. Now go away.

Why was that the one post you didn't ridicule? Was it just too easy?

Didn't seem that ridicule worthy. Most of those are decent books for people who don't really care about science to read so they can pretend to be informed. Which is important in our society.

Look, I don't care what your old man reads. Tell him Danielle Steele was a Zulu prophet, if you like. If your intent is really to help him explore spirituality, though, why not do that?

I suppose. Eck is hardly my area of focus; the reason it caught my attention was the mysticism present, of course I could just dig out my te-tao ching for that...

The way I see religious studies performed is a bit strange to me. You never question whether or not the material is accurate (sometimes you address its coherence) but instead just report purely on the experience of the religious subject. Basically, what i'm sayin is, when I first read up on eckankar, all I/the class read was the theology and experiences.

Smash, as a complete aside, to what extent do you believe Sokka Gakai International emulates this business model?

I don't know enough about the "business" side of the operation to comment. I could Gbaji it up and spend ten minutes looking for random information, but my ego's not "quite" that large. I'm fairly ambivalent towards their or most relatively consistent practicing Buddhist sects. They may be the greediest ******** on the planet, I have no idea.

I've read through the Nag Hammadi library and other assorted quasi-Judeo/Christian texts but that's about it. I've leafed through the Koran and the Book of Mormon a few times when I found them in hotel room drawers but neither compelled me to actually sit down and read through it.

I was involved in Soka Gakkai for a while. I think I was on crack at the time. They aren't the horriblest but remember when Saffy on Ab Fab accused her mom of using chanting as a "Cosmic Cash Machine?" That's Soka Gakkai.

How can none of you mention the Principia Discordia (or How I Found the Goddess & What I Did to Her When I Found Her. Wherein is Explained
Absolutely Everything Worth Knowing About Absolutely Anything)?!!

Quote:

THE FIVE COMMANDMENTS (THE PENTABARF)

The PENTABARF was discovered by the hermit Apostle Zarathud in the Fifth Year of The Caterpillar. He found them carved in gilded stone, while building a sun deck for his cave, but their import was lost for they were written in a mysterious cypher. However, after 10 weeks & 11 hours of intensive scrutiny he discerned that the message could be read by standing on his head and viewing it upside down.

KNOW YE THIS O MAN OF FAITH!

I - There is no Goddess but Goddess and She is Your Goddess. There is no Erisian Movement but The Erisian Movement and it is The Erisian Movement. And every Golden Apple Corps is the beloved home of a Golden Worm.

II - A Discordian Shall Always use the Official Discordian Document Numbering System.

III - A Discordian is Required during his early Illumination to Go Off Alone & Partake Joyously of a Hot Dog on a Friday; this Devotive Ceremony to Remonstrate against the popular Paganisms of the Day: of Catholic Christendom (no meat on Friday), of Judaism (no meat of Pork), of Hindic Peoples (no meat of Beef), of Buddhists (no meat of animal), and of Discordians (no Hot Dog Buns).

IV - A Discordian shall Partake of No Hot Dog Buns, for Such was the Solace of Our Goddess when She was Confronted with The Original Snub.

V - A Discordian is Prohibited of Believing what he reads.

IT IS SO WRITTEN! SO BE IT. HAIL DISCORDIA! PROSECUTORS WILL BE TRANSGRESSICUTED

Heathens, the lot of you!

I've always wanted to talk to someone who has been the object of soka gakkai proselytizing, and hear the story after they got shakubukku'd (to break and subdue) or however you spell it. I have no idea how they are percieved in japan aside from how the nichirens think of them and even that is only from study. It'd be nice to get a feel for the average japanese dude/et's opinion.

I remember being at a party with two of my friends standing above me, being very upset because I didn't want to chant. At some point, I relented. I liked it for a while. There is something very rhythmic and meditative. The problem is that it is very much of a group activity and I'm not much of a joiner when it comes to religious entities so I dropped out after a while. I started going to Catholic Church partly to **** one of them off--then I haven't really been to anything since 2001.
