Yup. Biggest age difference so far for me (he's 21), but it was rather refreshing being with a guy that young who knew what the hell he was doing.

In other news, I'm getting seriously fed up with Bethesda. Fine, we'll never get the DLC on PS3. Sucks, but I can accept that. What I can't accept is that our 1.06 patch (which is actually patches 1.6 and 1.7, because we never frickin' got the last one) seriously @#$%ed up the game. Again.

Freezing issues, general lag, a TON of graphical load issues (if I switch to third person, first I see a bald head, then a bald head with hair, then my helm. Or when I run up to a table... and wait for the higher res texture to load). It's just as bad as it was in 1.04, which 1.05 in theory mostly corrected (if you weren't one of the players who ended up with the unfixable version of the "enter water and freeze" bug).

It's ridiculous. I don't even care about general bugs at this point because I just want the game to be @#$%ing playable. How do you hold back on one patch because of stability issues and then release the next one... which just adds stability issues? It makes me wonder just how bad 1.05 was.

I'm a little pissed right now. Smiley: glare

I'm guessing it's because Betheseda develop on Xbox/PC, then port to PS3, because it's notoriously hard to code for. Things like this are why we need to move out of this console generation. They're terrible pieces of hardware.

/end PC master race rant.

It's due to the same stability issues the PS3 version has been having all along. Bethesda said they wouldn't release the DLC unless they could be confident it would work on all systems.

There have been a few tweets in the past few days suggesting they're close to releasing it, but nothing concrete.

After completely deleting all my Skyrim utility data off my PS3, I have my stability back. But if I have to do this every time they release a patch...

Yeah, it sucks spending 1600 dollars on a rig, just so your games can look like xbox/ps3 games. I was really underwhelmed with Dark Souls on the PC. I've stopped buying CoD for PC because those ports are terrible aswell. PC needs a decent fps game. I really wish they'd put Halo on PC, and make it run at 60 frames a second.

The lack of PC-taxing graphics isn't so bad if they allow for mods, at least.

And it's not terribly uncommon for developers to release a hi-res pack for the people who want one.

The really popular games often get unofficial packs anyway (though I imagine those are a b*tch to install).

The real problem with bad ports isn't lower resolution textures than your rig can handle, it's half-assed porting that leaves PC versions with UIs and other systems that are optimized for consoles but suck for keyboards/mice.

I supposed that's true. I played about 4 hours of Skyrim before the UI made me want to kill babies. It's a shame they didn't change it for the PC version, although I hear there's a mod that makes it more KB + Mouse friendly, so maybe I'll have to check it out again.

Nothing about Skyrim's UI seems all that console centric... It's about as minimalist as it can get?

Or are you talking about the menus? Yeah, I suppose that could be annoying. But can't you navigate to each menu from a keybind? I'm sure there are mods that would make even that default screen much better.

Skyrim's UI wasn't terrible. Dishonored's UI is worse (radial wheels, grrr).

My only complaint about Skyrim was the horrible optimization for the PC version. You had to fiddle with all kinds of details settings to make it run smoothly without lag. Other than that, it was a pretty solid port.

There were, of course, some things I disliked, but they weren't related to the port. The animations were horrible and melee fighting was clunky as all hell. That seems to be a general issue with Bethesda games as Dishonored is equally clunky if you end up in a regular sword fight there.

Or maybe it's just me, because I can't remember playing a first-person melee game that didn't feel clunky. Something about the field of vision and lack of depth perspective. I think I'm going to hit the guy, but I don't and instead hit the guy standing what appears to be ten feet away from me.

Skyrim's probably on par with all first person melee games I've played.

The combat is definitely one of its weakest aspects, but no one has ever really pretended otherwise. It's better than Oblivion, and Oblivion was better than Morrowind, so at least they're trying to make it better?

I have no clue what the plot of FFXIV was. I have no clue who any of those people were.

But if you're going to be shutting down a game so you can release a completely revamped version, then having Bahamut rip apart the status quo sounds like EXACTLY what the transition should be.

Here's a synopsis comment from over on Kotaku explaining what's going on.
DiamondEdge wrote:
An already evil guy gets mind raped by Bamahut, summons huge meteor down to wreck sh*t. Players complete a lot of quests, sucessfully kill the evil guy after wiping ten times or so, but huge meteor still comes down. When meteor is near the ground, nifty seal gets destroyed and reveals that the "meteor" was actually a seal for Bahamut. Old guy goes OH sh*t and uses the combined power of all 12 deities of the land to try and contain the dragon, and THAT fails as well. He then goes for plan Z or whateverand just tries to save the adventurers (IE: Us, the players) by sending them to the future. And then we wait for months till ARR gets released.

[EDIT]

Also, that human guardian protecting the lalafel whatever-uses-the-staff may actually be one of the most endearing things I've ever seen in a cinematic this bittersweet.

Yeah, that's pretty powerful. In general, I really like the AI vs humanity theme. If a machine is capable of thinking and feeling, what's the difference between it and us? I mean, humans are just organic machines, really.

We're still decades from true AI, but it's going to change the world when it happens. Not entirely sure if it's a good or a bad thing.

Coil as in wire or cables or something?

I'll be 'in bed' for 8-ish. How much of that is spent sleeping largely depends on the young ones. Somewhere around 7hrs. if everything goes right.
