Considering the length, you better reserve both days.

And I think I'm gonna go watch Star Wars now. :P A marathon of episodes 4-6 should be enough to keep me awake while I attempt to fix my sleep schedule. :D

I still haven't seen episode 3. But I think after watching the others so many times growing up, I never really got into the new ones.

That's because the new ones were awful movies. Liking the originals only made them worse from that point.

What's sad is that they all might have been SLIGHTLY better had their casting choices for Anakin not been the worst actors ever.

The first movie was god awful. That little kid just couldn't act. I know child actors largely suck, but c'mon--he was especially bad. The fact that the movie seemed to have been made for 11 year olds didn't help. And I love Natalie Portman, but no. Her performance was terrible. Add in Jar-Jar... Ugh.

The second could have been an okay movie had I never seen the originals, and had Hayden Christensen been murdered his first day on set.

I honestly don't remember much of the last one, except that:
-Dooku dies in the first few minutes
-that Pregnancy apparently makes strong, independent women into meak, whiny housewives
-that Obi-wan Kenobi got a high-ground bonus.
-that Samuel L. Jackson was the only acceptable character in the whole movie.
-that purple lightsabers are surprisingly cool, though that might have to do with Samuel L. Jackson being the one wielding it.
-that Padme dies in childbirth "from a broken heart," which is a total retcon because Leia says that she can remember their mother. Though, there are plenty other retcons, so I suppose I shouldn't let this one in particular **** me off.

That's it.

I've seen the first episode a few times, the second episode twice. Only saw the third once.

On the other hand, I've seen the other three at least 50 times each. And they never get worse.

I kinda liked the new Star Wars movies, I just disliked Hayden with all my heart.

Don't mind him as an actor, but he was completely wrong for the role. And the whining... dear god, the whining.

RIGHT? Thanks for taking one of the most iconic villains in movie history and making him a pansy *** teenager who misses his mommy. I mean, really? The story of a fall to the dark side could be so cool. "Wah, I dreamed that my wife was going to die... so I'm gonna kill all these children" never really made sense to me.

I did kind of like where they were trying to go with some of the story lines, it just ended up feeling really forced (zomg unintentional pun!). Like if they had let a scene play out for 15 minutes instead of trying to cram it into three it might have actually worked. To some extent it seemed like they were just doing the story parts so all the cool lightsaber battles could have some context. Smiley: rolleyes

Shia LeBeouf and Hayden Christensen need to both be dropped into vats of corrosive acid.

It wouldn't go the way you hoped anyway. Bad actors find a way to ruin even the best ideas.

Omg this.

Honestly, part of the problem was the story lines too. I mean, the movies would have been way better without the awful casting choices, but the stories had problems. Like protein said, they tried to pack too much in (which is already an issue if a quarter of the movie is going to be jedi battles).

Consider episode 5 (which is clearly the best in the series--*waves hand* you agree with me, move along). The WHOLE plot boils down to:

-Opening scene on Hoth, intended to show Han and Leia's growing attractions, how much the trio have come to care about each other, and Luke's growing Jedi powers.

This proceeds to be the plot of the whole movie. And it was awesome.

Like Maggie Gyllenhaal does in everything she's ever been in.

"Harvey, I know these briefs backwards."

Every time I hear that line in TDK, I die a little inside.

Unless they turn into something unexpectedly humorous. In that case they should be translated and then changed again later once everyone has had a good laugh. Smiley: wink

@Kali: If both parents are bi or multilingual, the choices do become more difficult. I would say that teaching your children English and then maybe one of the more obscure languages the two of you know would be a good option. English is currently the language of business, and it's widely used across Europe (duh, why am I telling a European this? lol), so it would definitely be a good investment for people to learn. That said, teaching a child an obscure language that not a lot of people know is cool, but how useful is it going to be? Are you going to use it enough that you will both retain that language? Also look at your motivation for teaching your children multiple languages at an early age. Is it for nerd cred? Or are you doing it to give them an edge in life and for the practicality of it?

Yeah, I won't raise my children in Dutch/Gujarati even if I could, that much is clear. I just wish that I'd been brought up in German/Russian or something, and I know a few people who have only been brought up in the country's language and not their parents' other language(s), and don't think it's good.
I would teach them the other languages later on (and before they're ~12 or so) if it makes some sense, but not from the start. I also might end up having them take Arabic lessons should it become relevant. I personally wish I'd gotten them as a child when I wanted to; similarly I'll give my children the opportunity to learn the languages they fancy if they express a strong interest and don't start a new one every few months.

Quote:
As far as religion stuffs go, I obviously can't speak for Europe, but there are plenty of Christian sects here in the US that believe that others are wrong and that they're going to hell because they aren't the "right" kind of Christian. Baptists are notorious for this (J was raised Baptist, but he's more agnostic now than anything), and most of Christendom is guilty of thinking this way about Mormons because they're "different." What's stupid is that as far as I can tell, there isn't that much difference between the different Christian sects. A lot of the more modern Christian sects believe in a more personal relationship with God, where as Catholics and Episcopalians like to have their priests as middle men via confession. I think the only real difference is that Christians don't hate each other enough to kill each other the way the two different Muslim sects do.

The funny thing is that the only somewhat significant Muslim sect that has vastly different customs in reality (Sufis) is the one not involved in any wars. The Sunni vs Shia conflicts are mostly about which family has power; In Bahrain it gives the royal family an opportunity to a) suppress the masses and b) receive powerful allies with Saudi Arabia and UAE, for example, when the actual religious conflict is really not all that relevant. It's of course always been like that with religious wars, the motives tend to be related to something completely secular.
It's of course not as simple as that but a lot of the stuff going on is totally against Sharia in my opinion and these people really don't have that much credibility when you try to base their actions on scripture.

In Europe there's not much conflict because no one really cares about any religion at all. Most European countries have a strict policy of either ignoring that people want to live out their beliefs at all, or "respecting everyone" for the sake of public image and political correctness.
This all gets to be a bit different when you notice the Libertas/Freedom parties that have started cropping up everywhere and seem to have virtually no policy beyond some very broad undifferentiated Islamophobia. Bleh.

Edit: re: names
I agree they shouldn't be translated. Actually on a similar note to the children thing, I've been trying hard to think of a name I could give a child that could be pronounced by my parents and wouldn't end up completely ridiculous sounding in whichever country I'd potentially raise children in. Meh.
Although the Dutch version of Harry Potter is totally lulzy. Smiley: inlove

Ghost Stories had a great dub. The anime itself is really boring, and the people doing the translation into English knew that, so they just said **** it and redid the entire script and instead of a "scary" story turned it into a comedy. It's one of the few (if only) animes I suggest people watch dubbed instead of subbed. The DVDs have the usually options. Regular subs so you can watch the actual anime, the comedy script sub so you can watch with the original voices but the humorous script, and the dub with the humorous script.

I just bought Mafia 2 today and I'm loving it. I've just gotten past the very beginning of the game though, I'm in chapter 4 or something.
It's only my second game on playstation 3 and the graphics are just amazing to me.

The city, Empire Bay I think it is, is awesome and the game's athmosphere is awesome.
I love driving around in the old cars and listening to old music. I loved that they had kept the songs from Mafia in the radio, I remember laughing my *** off at one of the songs back in the day when I played the first game.
I recommend the game to everyone.
