I don't think I agree. But I'm also running on 3.5 hours of sleep and lack the cranial capacity to come up with a well thought and cohesive argument. But somehow I still managed to think up fancy sounding words... go figure.

3 - 5 hours is my average night of sleep. I do NOT recommend it if you're older than college age. I would kill to be college age again.... when my body DIDN'T hate me.
As for a dictionary definition, "Racism" is the hatred of a person based on their heritage.
Now, in modern colloquialism, I can see the oppressed being lumped into it, such as homosexuals, the poor, or religious hatred, but that isn't textbook racism.

I see racism as believing negative racial stereotypes as facts.

Instead of potential comedy material. So sad...

lol, Horse...

And @Pigtails, what would you call believing stereotypes about another group of people, based on their heritage? I don't know of any word that fits that description other than "racism."

Furthermore, what you have described (bias pertaining to opression) leaves the term impossible to apply to the individual or oppressor. You can't be racist, if racism is an evaluation of scenarios.

And here's a good example:

My dad works at a car dealership. Years ago, he had a somewhat regular customer who was a WWII vet. This guy HATED Japanese people. Absolutely despised them. I assume he served in the pacific theater.

The irony? He drove a Toyota. This guy absolutely hated Japanese people, and believed a crap ton of stereotypes about them, yet was actually supporting their economy.

I would argue that the term "racist" can only apply to people. It's application to situations is only a reflection of the individuals causing said situation. It can only be racist if racism was intended.

For example, this isn't an image of anything racist. This is an image of oppression due to racism. This is an image that contains no oppression, but is probably racist. And it's racist because whoever engineered it (the display) likely did so for racist reasons.

Reminded me of this video.

That video is hilarious Horse! That man is a great story teller. Reminds me of one of my friends. I'm going to have to show that to her.

Seriously though, I'll come back to this conversation tomorrow when I've had a decent night's sleep. I'm not that great of a debater to begin with add lack of sleep and it makes it even worse.

I have a sudden desire to watch every episode of that anime, despite not knowing anything about it beyond that picture...

Isekai no Seikishi Monogatari. I've only seen one episode, but I saw that scene and was like "I HAVE GOT TO DEMOTIVATE THAT!"

So I came out to my mom as being poly today. It actually went over pretty well, which I had a feeling it would. However, I took a nap earlier and apparently left fetlife up on my laptop. She saw it and she saw the pictures I have up on there. She didn't really say what she thought of that... she just said we'd talk about it later. =x So yeah... that should be an interesting conversation.

lol, yay and ouch.

I'd rather stab myself in the eye than ever have to discuss a sexual preference with my parents.

And do you not use a screen saver?

No, I don't. I have it set up that it turns the screen off after a certain amount of time, but I don't remember what that time is. But yeah, my mom and I have been really close since I was a teenager, and I tell her a lot. But J and I have been poly for almost 3 years now, in actual practice for about a year and a half. As I'm sure you can sympathize Digg, it's awkward and uncomfortable talking to your parents about how you're strange and different from "normal" people. I wasn't sure how'd she react, so I tested the waters a bit over the last six months, asking her questions about the times she cheated on my dad, and whether she thought it was possible to be in love with more than one person at a time. I got the impression that she would be understanding at the very least, and not freak out to the level that she did when she found out I was bisexual. =x

Dude, I wish my mom had freaked out. Easily the most uncomfortable experience of my life. She cried and begged me to stop messing with her. >_____> The only allusion to my sexuality since then is that she automatically assumes I'm dating all of my friends (including the girls). But she won't ask that, instead she asks if I'm "paying for <friend's name> too" whenever we go out.

I hate white people. I'm legit racist towards my own race, lol.

/sigh

Actually, in retrospect, telling her I was into BDSM probably would have been less awful.

My parents aren't, generally, particularly close-minded. But they are super old fashioned in some ways, and not at all prepared to see the heteronormativity of our current culture. I had an uncle who was gay and died to AIDS. They waited to tell me that until they decided I was "old enough to know." As if there was an age at which a child can't understand same-sex couples exist. Ironically, that age was well after I had realized I was gay.

Oh, and the uncle died when I was 5 or 6. So it's not the death aspect that they took issue with. I went to his funeral, and said goodbye to him on his deathbed. I actually don't have a single memory of him though, which makes me really sad... Part of me wonders if I would still have them if we had talked about his life in my household. And I wish I didn't, because I kinda blame my parents more for that than anything else. I didn't have any gay role models in my life (or knowledge of them) when I realized I was gay. Having the memory of a gay family member would have meant a lot.

He's also partly why I don't blame my mother a ton for her reaction when I came out though. His death was long and painful, and she helped take care of him a lot in his final months. Considering the AIDS=gay stigma that's existed (and was even worse 15 years ago), she probably ended up internalizing the pain he went through as being because he was gay. And I don't mean in a blame sense.

But now I'm depressing the thread. Feel free to chime in, anyone, about boobs and beer whenever you want.

Okay, so I haven't read the last 3 pages of this or so because I've actually had a life for once, but a couple of things.

I met ArtemisEnteri, and he's lovely and adorable.

Edinburgh in general and the people contained within it I now know are also utterly amazing.

I'm gonna be in England for 37 days now. Doesn't actually sound too much.

Oh! And yesterday I was in Edinburgh while Andrew was in Berlin which amused me greatly.
