The Death of the O-BoardsFollow

#1 Nov 15 2010 at 10:03 PM Rating: Excellent
Happens this Wednesday, November 17th.

They're encouraging all players to move over to the new forums, of course. It's not like the forums are gone completely. But they're shutting down the old ones and moving over to the new system, including karma. It's about damn time.

I predict Tuesday night will be full of people trying to get the last post ever before they lock the forums, followed by a lot of QQing on the new forums about how the new system sucks.

Then a lot of downrating.

Edit because I suck at links.

I didn't even realize the old forums still existed.

New forums are so much better.

New forums look much nicer, the addition of a karma system is awesome.

Well this came a little earlier than I thought, but no loss. I think the new forums look a lot better, too. Looks clean and organized in my opinion.

Good thing Blizz isn't wiping the old forums yet.

Karma system here only works because most of us are mature enough to not abuse it. Putting it in the hands of the regular O-Board poster does not immediately come off as a good idea.

On the short term, I agree that it's a bad idea. But on the long term it might actually help.

I approve of adding a karma system to the O-boards; if only for the emo lulz it's bound to cause.

I predict a new PvP minigame will quickly become prevalent amongst the rich and the teens who have mommy's credit cards. People will be buying accounts just to karma bomb for giggles.

And if blues are karma-ble (yes its a word...I swear), GC is going to be sub defaulted in record time. Now excuse me while i go sell a kidney to afford thirty more accounts to help make that happen...

Guess what won't be happening today!

We're still hammering out some last minute issues, so the new forums aren't quite ready for prime time use just yet. We're working day to day to see when we can transition to the new site, so putting these forums as read-only could happen any time between tomorrow and early next week.

Karma system reminds me a lot of High School. Two different people can make the exact same post but one will be rated to sub default, the other excellent. It is just a big popularity contest. It does have some good points. Being able to rate people down who post false information, spam, something illegal, stuff completely off topic, etc. But other times people simply disagree with something you say and rank you down when you don't really deserve it. The Everquest 1 forums would have to be the worst for this actually here on Zam. You do a 2 hour long quest for a rusty weapon (something you can loot within about 2 minutes of killing lvl 1 trash) you better not dare say it was a waste of your time or hint in any way you didn't like it.

I doubt they will let you rate down the blues. Even if you could I doubt they would care. I guarantee the blue who posted the "Sorry your screwed" response to the lost enchants during 4.0 would have been sub default in a matter of minutes.

The new forums do look a lot better indeed.

Fronglo, you only say that because you get rated down fairly often for saying stupid stuff. Generally speaking I'm not usually a proponent of rating down someone for having a different opinion, but if that person's opinion is just plain stupid, then they probably deserve it. Besides, it's just karma. Is the color of your name really that big of a deal?

I'll admit that sometimes the karma system gets abused, but for the most part in the forums I frequent/have frequented in the past, it's "working as intended."

I never understood the rare apprehension about the Karma system.
I personally get nuked down as often or more often than I get rated up, but it doesn't really matter.
You'll only get rated down for opinions, never fact. So, keeping it in mind that your opinion won't change and you WILL get rated down for it, it is just water under the bridge.

I don't make a habit of posting stupid stuff. I have been rated down for things for no reason though. Heck one time I remember typing out 2 paragraphs to answer somebody's question and getting rated down to default (during my Eq1 or eq2 days I think so a long time ago). People really like to rate you down anytime you don't love everything about the game though. I don't go around belittling people, calling them names, cussing at people, etc. Those are the type of people who should be rated down IMO.

Eh, if your account listed more than just your last three posts I'm sure I could find something in the last week or two. I can't be bothered to re-read every thread here until I find one of your gems though.

Is there any way to switch characters? It's posting on my mage who isn't really my main character and I can't seem to figure out how to change to my pally.

Click your character name, in the top right, next to your character. It will have a drop down list of your characters to choose from
