Each element in Final Fantasy XI has a strength and a weakness. Exploiting an element's weakness allows for better results in crafting, spells cast on mobs, a mob's strength during a fight, etc.

Following the chart to the right, and the explanation below, a player will become accustomed to knowing elemental relationships as if it is second nature to them.

• Fire melts Ice
• Ice compacts Wind
• Wind erodes Earth
• Earth grounds Thunder
• Thunder electrolyzes Water
• Water douses Fire
• Light illuminates Dark
• Dark eclipses Light

Certain weapon skills have elemental properties, as well.
