Starting on my professionsFollow

Been 80 on my rogue and figured i'd better get some professions.

My idea is to level two gathering profs, maybe mining/skinning or skinning/herbalism then use the pooled money to level a crafting skill?

Also, is it a good idea to start a new character and just level the professions as i go along?

It is going to be lot easier to get two professions on your lvl 80. And for future: yes, it's perfectly fine to level up professions while levelling.

If you want to get two gathering professions, go for it. There are addons( like this one that make it easier to get mining/herbalism combo that is more profittable. What it does is to change tracking every one or so second. So I suggest going with that for money.

However, it is very viable to get crafting profession paired with gathering one. Instead of buying mats on AH you will be simply getting them on your own as you level the other profession. It is cheapest way (well, without putting in any hard cash) as many lower level mats are very overpriced (mithril and thorium in particular) on AH. You can have friendly enchanter DE all pieces that you make and sell those. Or you can sell greens for decent money if you're patient.

If you plan to make another alt sometime, then I strongly suggest getting professions as soon as possible. You are simply wasting time by powerlevelling them at cap instead of working on them as you go.

I agree with what the above poster said.

Do you happen to know what Skill you plan to level later? (after the pooled money?)

If it is Money you are after, Herb/Mining is a money maker. I did it on my DK. He was still lv58 and had well over 1k gold before I even began to work on leveling him up. And he still has both of them professions (herb to make money, mining to farm for my Lock who is an Engineer).

When I cared to know where both nodes where (due to only being able to track one at a time w/ Blizz's mini-map) I used Carbonite. It has a feature that lets you import a Database to show you all Nodes/Herb spots. So you can track on with mini-map, but keep an eye on Carb's mini map for the other (don't combine the mini maps, keep them apart).
Worked for me.

If you plan on leveling another toon, your rogue could be the farmer while the other could use the mats thus allowing them to level 2 "create" professions that could benefit you all around.

Remember that disenchanting can also be considered a gathering profession. You gather greens at the AH, disenchant, and sell the mats. You would use Auctioneer to search for greens and blues with potential profit from mats. You could do something like mining / enchanting if you wanted. Personally, although I have a level 450 miner / herbalist, Both my horde and alliance AH toons are enchanters, and that is really all I do for cash.

I see your main points have already been well answered so i will ask why you want professions ? if it is to make gold then take up any of the gathering ones as they will always be a no brainer for making gold .

However if you have enough gold and want to level another character and want to be creative many trades are helpful as you level although most will not make you much gold ..

I prefer to level my alts with a trade as at least i get to use the items they make.

I find out of all the trades engineering is the most fun to level with , especially if you like blowing things up and at around level 30-35 the "pets" get to be great fun and chaos as they try to defend you by running around attacking any mob that is near them , so if you like toys and bangs it is one idea for you and works well for most classes , profit comes mostly from the excess materials you collect.

My choice has been to level many alts all with a trade skill the others can use and the most efficient one for making gold and getting good gear as you level i find is the tailor enchanter combo , I was not that interested in the enchanting for making gold but the disenchanting sure can be a fun way to both help level your character and make plenty of gold with the excess materials .

I can give a quick run through of how it works , collect cloth then make the cheapest green items you get skill points from your tailoring with then disenchant them and enchant some item you are wearing many times over as long as you get skill points , then as you get higher level you sell the excess materials that are no longer needed , if you get it right and enjoy spending a little time farming cloth along with disenchanting quest rewards you should have plenty of gold and nice enchants on your gear , for example both my mages at mid levels had enchanting and tailoring maxed for their levels and several thousand gold but i did spend a lot of time farming and do disenchant what my other alts collected or made that would not easily sell. I can say you should at least make a small reasonable profit from this combo , and thinking about it with a level 80 you can run the low level instances for cloth and greens which if you want the dungeon achievements is a perfect way to get them , i have been doing some of them for my mages and i usually try and sell the items once and i find if i disenchant any that do not sell i still have far to many materials so that is how i made my gold.

Other creative trades can make gold as you level but it is only on some items and that depends on your server so it may or may not be possible to make gold as you level an alt , as each creative trade needs a collecting trade that is where the gold comes from so it will slow your alts levelling a little unless your level 80 does the farming , personally i prefer to keep my high level alts out of the way unless it is a specific item needed that is easier for them to collect .

I just love engineering, and have 3 level 450 engineers. It's not for making money, but for a priest, I think rocket boosts on the boots are the single best boot enhancement you can have. Mobs wailing on you? Fade on cooldown? Despirite Prayer / Rocket to the other side. Paralytic Toxin got you down? Light up them boots for a driveby on burning bile. In pvp, trinket and boost out of there. Easily catch up with a tank that left you drinking mana.

My alts are my money makers. On my main, I do what I enjoy (tailoring / engineering).

Informative thanks guys. Enchanting i consider to be far to expensive to level and the gathering aspect a bit weaker due to the new disenchant option, shame really.

I've leveled herb and skinning to 300 since starting this thread, decided to get 2 gatherers before i pool money for a profession, i think i'll wait for 3.3 before leveling one, see what the impact of the update is on the market.

Even if the DE option was having an effect - it's really the combination of vastly more drops in the first place and increased dust/essence returned from Northrend greens - that says nothing about using Enchanting as your throwaway "gathering" profession for leveling.

Just like prosepecting for Jewelcrafting, leveling DE is a pyramid scheme. As long as you aren't the last person leveling the profession on your server, you'll almost certainly be able to sell more mats at a given level than you used getting to that level. Especially since, at this point, most toons leveling are alts of rich mains with nothing else to spend the money on except 15k Battered Hilts.

And there's nothing keeping you from continuting to hit the leveling market even when you're capped. I spend part of my 16 minute average queue time for the random daily buying greens and generating Illusion and Arcane dust - which sell for twice as much as Infinite - and make 20-50g. It ain't much, only as much as the daily itself, but it's free money out of what would otherwise be downtime.

So you said you had a rogue, consider some of the profession only self buffs.

Gathering
Skinning + crit
Herbing + heal over time spell
mining +stam

Crafting
Scribe, Shoulder enchants
JC, dragon eye cut gems
Encahnt, ring enchants
LW, leg patches?
BS, wrist and hand sockets
Eng, not sure...back, belt and feet stuff?
Tailor, back enchant (not so good for rogue)

i know i am missing alot here, but its just to give you an idea that professions have nice little self only extras

engi gives a tad better cloak ench (+23 instead of +22 agi), arguably the best hand chant (pyro rocket/accelerators, depending on class/spec) and possibly the best feet enchant for dps class (+24crit rating)...

Alchemy, double effect from potions and flasks (and access to alchy-only items like Mad/Crazy Alchemist Potion and Flask of the North)

I'll be focusing professions around the money side, stats I personally don't really fuss over that much. Thanks though!
