Gathering skills questionFollow

Another professions question: Just to make a full picture, I'm new to wow, and the priest I'm making will be my first and main. I had pretty much decided on tailoring and herbalism, until I heard conflicting arguements about having two gathering professions until 40. Since this is my first character, should I take two gathering proffesions to gain money, then switch? And if so, which ones? Any input would be most welcome. Thank you in advance.

Herbalism and Mining are better money makers then skinning. Although you have to go around finding them, when in skinning, you just skin the beasts you kill.
Though Don't always rely on your professions to get you money. You have to use the AH, and quests will contirbute to your money aswell. I Started skinning and Leatherworking at level 5 and when i reached level 40 i was 225 leatherworking and 300 skinning. If you want a head start in your main profs go tailoring and what ever other prof you would like.
Though if you want money, 2 gathering profs would be the right way to go. =D

The good thing about a Tailor is it need no seperate gathering skill, this means you could sell all your herbs for profit while still lvling a profession.

People often say take 2 gathering professions because it would be pointless to take say mining and blacksmith if you were just gonna sell all the ores you got, much better to use that other profession to gather as well.

The good thing about Tailoring is the posibility of being an enchanter as well, you can dis-enchant all the cloth stuff you make and lvl that at the same time as tailoring. My alt is a tailor/enchanter (and a priest) and this works very well.

My opinion:

Tailoring is a waste of time, energy, and gold at lower levels. It uses supplies of stuff that can be put to better use - Cloth can be converted into bandages to level your First Aid skill and First Aid is more important than any crafting profession. Cloth sells for better prices than any items you craft. Lastly, any items you craft do not equal the quality you can get either as drops or rewards.

So, what is tailoring good for? It's good for a one-time shot at Robe of the Void or other recipe that produces the equivalent BoP for the other cloth-wearers. After you've crafted your robe, drop tailoring and go back to a money-making profession.

So, you (bert) say tailoring is good to have for reasons and sell herbs on the side. Sounds nice, but then you (ohmike) say tailoring isn't worth the investment. But isn't tailoring worth the work even if it's only to get to the bags? (gotta love bags)

Join a guild that has a tailor and you can buy bags cheap or get them free. After a couple chars, I realize that making money is more important at lower levels than a profession.

I went with herbalism and skinning. It's amazing how much some of the stacks of lower lvl herbs go for in the AH. Oh and BTW, everything you gather should be sold in the AH. I always check the going rates and undercut by a bit. My stuff always sells within 24hours.

As a third gathering profession, take up fishing. It takes a bit to get going, but if you like the battlegrounds, you can fish while you wait for battle and get it up to 100 in no time. Stacks of Oily Blackmouths and Firefins and Stonescale Eels are worth 2-8 gold a stack, maybe higher in some realms.

When you get to 40, you can level whatever profession you want pretty fast to 250. In the meantime, you will have enough gold to buy your upgrades. Choose a profession that interests you. I like tailoring for the bags mostly. They sell pretty well once you get to runecloth bags. I also made tuxedos for anyone who wanted one in my guild.

That sounds very practical, thank you Amber. And thank you other peoples too :) I will be joining a guild right off the bat hopefully, cousins need more priests with them :P

Nope. I admit I love bags. But, gold will get you whatever bags you want faster than levelling and crafting them. What level do you need to be to craft mooncloth bags? Every single one of my toons had a full complement of them (or the equivalent Traveler's Backpacks) by L10. The only one I sent bags to was my latest (a new Draenei). The rest purchased their own.
