Blacksmithing/Leatherworking specialization has changed with specialization providing recipes to make powerful items that only you can wear. You can now unlearn a blacksmithing or leatherworking specialization and learn a different one by finding the appropriate NPC, paying the fee to unlearn your old specialization, and then find the new specialist to learn a new one. Also, all of the old blacksmithing/leatherworking recipes that required specialization no longer require it and can be learned by any blacksmith/leatherworker.

I think this is one of the more interesting changes in the latest patch. And as of yet I’m not certain of all the ramifications. It sounds like all the current smithing and leatherworking patters will be open to those with just the basic skill. And new patterns are being introduced that are all BoP items. But does the above also mean that those two professions can change their specialization at any time after paying the fee or is it just a one shot? And if so, can we still use the items from the old specialization?

Any thoughts on the change in general?

I think that this won't change either of the tradeskills much. I suspect that the BoP recipes will be much like Robe of the Void. A warlock can take up tailoring temporarily to create it, and drop the skill for something more useful after he creates the robe. The robe can still be worn after the 'lock is no longer a tailor.

With every leatherworker or blacksmith now able to make the previously spec items, prices should start dropping rapidly for those items. Some of the ones that have the toughest mats to get will stay up there, but the more common or easily farmed ones will go way down when people start flooding the market. I hope the new items are worth it.

Didn't you have to drop leatherworking all together before to switch a spec? ie, start from 0 if you wanted to swap from dragonscale to tribal?

Seems this way you keep all of your normal patterns, you just lose the specific ones when you change types.

At least, thats how I read this patch and the last one where there were LW changes. Ofc, I've never actually switched specializations, so I don't really know for sure=(

No, leatherworkers and blacksmithers can learn the recipes from the other specializations now without having to drop anything.

True. My husband's hunter is 300 Tribal and last night we went out and farmed for the Stormshroud shoulders recipe. Got it and he learned it and all I need are the Essence of Air and my druid will have these shoulders! I've been wanting them for some time but could not find any elemental lw'ers on our server and none ever appeared on the AH. Happy day for me!

Also means I can quit trying to skill up my rogue in lw for the time being as she was the one who was going to go elemental. Though, I probably still will eventually just to learn Helm of Fire.

This is delicious. I've been trying to get around to running master swordsmith quest in Strat so I can make Arcanite Champion. I'm already 300 skill so maybe I can go home for lunch and make it.

This is a big boon to those of us who don't have the (uninterrupted) time to run high level instances. At least we can spend time farming rep/mats to create items getting us out of lvl 55 greens.

I was worried at first about the crusader/lifesteal/icy nerf but it's really not that bad..it's still worth it to put crusader on my new Arcanite Champ even as I venture into outland to level.

Edit:
Yes it's true...my 300 smith learned arcanite champ and made, searched AH recipes with 'usable' modifier and logged off wishing I had 600g to buyout stronghold gauntlet recipe.
