Mining/Skining for beginners...Follow

#1 Nov 07 2006 at 7:10 PM Rating: Decent
So here is the deal. I'm brand spanking new this WoW and I'm running a priest. I've been scanning over some of the postings already about this topic, so I apologize for anything repeated. I'm debating over skinning or mining (first aid being one of my existing trades), how do I go about and make money off this? Do I just go skin the mob once it is dead and sell the results to vendor/AH. Or do I have to make equipment out of it THEN sell it. Same for mining, do I go mine it and sell the result, or should I learn how to make bars and then sell that way.

Keep in mind that I'm new and not quite sure what all the abbreviations mean lol, but any help would be great.

You can sell the leather and hides you skin as-is at the AH. For mining, you can either sell the raw ore or smelt them into bars before selling. Check both prices before smelting to decide. The point of taking up 2 gathering skills is to sell, not make goods.

You can sometimes use the materials to have someone with a production skill like leatherworking to make an item, but generally the money you make selling the raw goods will allow you to purchase even better armor/weapons on the AH.

With mining you can sell your copper on the auction house. Depending on your server copper may sell for a rather large sum. You can try selling your stones as well, though the demand for them won’t be as high.

Skinning and herbalism, at least in my experience, don’t have much of a demand in the auction house for their lowest level products. I usually just sell them to NPC vendors. But even so, for a new character on a new server every copper helps. The money the NPCs give you can help you get your first bags sooner than someone without those gathering skills. That’s assuming you can’t get someone to make you six slot bags for free if you provide the linen cloth and thread.

In the long run I’ve found herbalism to be the most profitable gathering skill, simply because herbs are so much more prevalent than ore. Mining is also good, but as I mentioned I find it more difficult to find ore to mine. Skinning is good, as it’s so very easy to get leather, but for that same reason it doesn’t sell for much on the auction house. The only way I’ve found to make money from leather if from selling lots of it.

Once the expansion comes out things may well change. The cost of raw ore on the auction house will likely skyrocket for a time at least, as the new Jewelcrafting profession will use the ore and everyone and their goldfish will have a Jewelcrafter. I’m just dreading the cutthroat competition over mineral nodes. The bloodshed on PvP servers will likely triple at least.

I have a link to a guide on making money in my signature that you may find useful. As has been mentioned, First Aid, Cooking and Fishing are all secondary professions and don't count towards your main professions. I recommend both skinning and either mining or herbalism. See what sells better at lower levels (look at the ore types and herb types in the zone you're questing in, then check the prices at auction house. Don't forget to check the number of items in the stacks (ore is 10/stack while herbs and bars are 20/stack). Sometimes ore sells for more than bars, sometimes it's the other way around.

As others have said, get both mining and skinning. Don't vendor any skins/ores/bars - only sell in the AH, since vendors give you prctically nothing for what you gather. ...and yes, you skin mobs after they die. Skinning them while alive (while it would be gratifying) just doesn't work.

Initially, you should make and sell bars, since making bars will help you level your mining skill. After all the bar-making has turned gray, determine whether ore or bars sells for more and act appropriately.
