question about Gnomish engineering vs. GoblinFollow

well since you can now drop engineering and get the other side, I wanna try and pin down a few things to see whats REALLY worth having long term...

after all, while there are alot of recepies that can only be made by one spec, alot of them are able to be used by both. this divides all recepies that are in a spec into one of two categories:

1. items that are only useable by the person of that spec (ie the item itself says "requires gnomish engineer" or the such). these can only be used by a person of that spec

2. items that are BoP, but not "requires xxx engineer". these items can only be created by one type of engineer, but if you drop engineering and pick it up again (yes, leveling to 300 twice) then you can use it as goblin engineering even if the item is otherwise gnomish engineering

3. items that can only be made by one type of engineering, but are neither BoP nor require one type of engineering. these items require no special effort to gain other than having an engineer of the other type make it and either sell it on AH or trade it to you.

since the information on the internet is either inconsistant or incomplete for most of this stuff, and I can't get a hold of most of the items, could engineers of the two specs please help me out and sort the specialized recepies into one of these three categories.

I would also like to know which items can break when used (and thus would require the help of a specialized engineer to use again). I know many goblin items work like this, but I dont know if any gnomish ones have this issue.

thanks for your help!

you're thinking too much about it

Engineering Recipes

look at that list, whichever one you like more that are bop or specific, go for that tree. everything else can be made by an engineering friend who is the other tree, and used by you.

I actually spent hours figuring this out. I listed the gnome and goblin counterparts as best as i couls side by side and compared the benefits. I prepared this for a Warlock character I am going to make so it can only wear cloth armor. What I found out was:

1. Each side had 1 item I couldnt use (Goblin Mining Helmet is mail and Gnomish Harm Prevention Belt is leather)

2. Gnomeish doesn't have anything that permanently destroys itself or that needs reloading

3. Goblin has one item that can destroy itself so it would need remade (Goblin Rocket Boots) and one item that can be used by Gnomish Engineers but not reloaded (and its bind on pickup so you cant have a Goblin Engineer reload it for you, you'd need to buy a new one, that's the Goblin Mortar)

4. One item requires Gnomish Engineering specifically to use, the gnomish world enlarger.

My conclusion was itd be best to start with gnomish then go to goblin so you can remake boots and refill your mortar, which seemed much more useful than the ability to lower the aggro radius for 5 minutes until you attack (which is what the world enlarger does), especially since there are elixis with the same effect and they nolonger stack.

If you were planning to just do one,i am not sure which I would pick. Goblin stuff tends to do lots of damage, whereas Gnomish stuff does a lot of fun but useful things (like controlling peoples minds). I can post my side by side list but it wouldnt appear formatted correctly on here.

yeah malana I came to about the same conclusion. the only items in gnomish engineering which have an effect in combat (other than looking really cool, thank you smokey) and are BoP or require gnomish engineering are the death ray and the world enlarger. while the enlarger is great for flag caps (makes already small gnomes dimunitive), the death ray is BoP but can be used by goblin engineers. because of this, I leveled gnomish engineering (only cost about 100g and 2 hours to level to 245 or so and get the important items). I'm afraid that theyre going to add some more gnomish engineering items in BC, so I'm waiting on that before I make the switch though

In the end, by going gnomish, and then switching to goblin, at this time the only items you loose is the world enlarger and the teleport: gadgetzan.

P.S. Blue, I know that I *should* just do as youre saying and pick my favorite side and stick to it, but I want to have every item possible, and the death ray is just too good to resist.
