Winterspring, Yeti cave. You'll get more rugged than you know what to do with.

rugged leather sort of levels out as a profitable item towards the end (esp if u have another gathering profession like herb if that is so staying in Winterspring and farming the hell out of it will earn u heaps, gromsblood etc)
if u only have skinning then u need to get the finkle skinner and go on UBRS runs, lots of dragons to skin yielding rugged leather and scales. Chromatic scales are esp good to sell (if u dun need them for quest)
other good skins include chimera skins (prices depends on how many ppl are into tribal LW, I dunno if elemental LW uses it), also shadowpanther hides sell well but they are more or less for lower level items.

do not expect skinning to give u lots of gold per hour done skinning. its a nice stable trickle of gold

I just had to say it - the best place to profitably skin is molten core - core leather!

Okay, i'm finished now...

But seriously, like cancerous says, do lots of UBRS runs for good skinning money. And if you can get the skinning knife and the +5 skinning enchant to get to 315, make 'em pay to have you skin the beast.

I always read that any two of the three gathering professions are quite profitable. I played (I've taken a couple of months off) on several servers and I've never found skinning to be as profitable as mining or herbalism. Maybe it is different for rugged leather but light, medium and heavy don't sell for much, especially compared to some of the lower level ores (e.g., copper) or herbs. Mining with herbalism has subsequently become my favorite combination (and I've never found that not being able to display both in the mini map is much of an issue). Does anyone else have the same experience?

True, skinning isn't as profitable per stack, but it's a virtually free income source (you just need the knife), and a lot of mobs are skinnable. Thus, you are making extra , and you make up for the price per stack in the quantity of stacks you can get.

IMO the best to get alot of thick / rugged leather is in Jurassic Park, oops i mean Ungoro. Bring a good aoe spec mage and you run round on your mount and gather up lots of mobs then bring to the mage (great if mage can also gather mobs on mount too) then aoe FTW, while your skinning this gives the mage a good chance to regen mana for the next run, also you have the added bonus of running into devilsaurs to skin as well which seem to sell well on most servers (4-5g on mine each). Best route I have found is to gather mobs around the middle of the maps as there are 4 devilsaurs that walk in the area. Skin all and split profits with the mage if you wanna sleep comfortably at night. There are also some nice drops there that sell/dis well like Pridelord gear and devilsaur patterns.

more mob variety in un'goro but better rugged rate in winterspring yeti cave.

however, i will suggest another place...burning steppes. you have scorpids and dragonkin there. besides thick and rugged leather, you'll also get scorpid scales and dragon scales (i think the white worn ones, which are still useable).
dragonkin in swamp of sorrows may also be good to kill, depending on your class.

if you want to corner the turtle scale market, then turtles in hinterlands or tanaris, all the while getting other leather also.

keep in mind that depending on your server, something like heavy leather may have more demand than thick or rugged. you can kill heavy-leather mobs faster, netting you more over time. heavy leather on my server is actually not much less than thick or rugged.
